Another UFC Undisputed Review: 9/10

still waitin on the big publications to review the game though

Since everyone is praising this game so much, I'll knock it a little here.

Being a huge fan of both the sport and of video games (sports games in particular) I have been anticipating this one for a while now. I know how hard it is to put this sport and everything it offers into a video game. It is a task that I have always been skeptical, yet optimistic about. I have been playing the demo with all my skepticism in mind and have focused a lot on the flaws of the game.

Here are my complaints:

1. The standing game is too rigid.

When you throw 25 Chuck Liddell signature overhand rights in one round you know something is wrong. On the flipside, when you know the overhand right is coming over and over again sometimes there is nothing you can do about it. It hits you trough a block. There is no way to just bob away from it like you can in Fight Night. If you hit block exactly right you get the double unders which is cool unless you are a BJJ guy and your only move from double unders is to pull guard. I can't tell you how many times I blocked a punch perfectly only to be rewarded with a pointless tieup since Shogun can't do anything from the double unders.

My fix: Make the signature ounches harder to throw. Do not let them be just a button away.

Adopt the Fight Night bob and weave functions.

Give BJJ guys a takedown from double unders.

3. The ground game requires too much button mashing.

They may be onto to something with the rotating right stick, but I don't think they've found it yet.

My fix: Make the stick more an extension of the fighter when the fight hits the ground. They do this a little and all it does is leave my wanting more. When you start a ground move the right way you can se the fighter react to the stick. If you are in half-guard and move the stick left you see his arm hit the mat. Then you rotate and see him try a pass. That is pretty cool. Problem is that it seems like you really only have one move from there.

Fix: It would be cool if no matter which way you moved the stick the fighter would throw a limb in that direction and the rotating would react to that.

3. The ground game is repetitive. All I'm going to say here is that the best way to get out from under an opponent is to go for a submission. Even when you are Chuck and your opponent is Shogun. It is frustrating to be postured up in half-guard and then Chuck just his to click the stick to grab an armbar. Then the button mashing begins before eventually standing the fight back up.

Fix: Not sure. Maybe limit certain fighters abilities to go for submissions. Or maybe use a chart that I think I may have seen in a wrestling game once. Show both fighters right sticks on the screen with target points and let the battle happen there. Maybe just use that technique but don't show the sticks.

4. This may be the most unrealistic game ever made. There are way too many first round KOs to argue this point. The only defense I can think of is that we do fight a lot more carelessly than we should and maybe that is why. Either way, I'd like to see a decision just once out of a hundred fights.

Conclusion: Love the game :silly: I am exctied that THQ did such a good job out of the gate. I obviously think there is miles to improve upon, but I am confident that THQ can get there. Being able to fight in all the different weight classes with over 80 fighters plus being able to create your own is awesome. I'm hoping that the lightweights have less KOs and more battles.

Now I'm done.

i agree with almost everything you said.......that said i love the demo, can't wait for the game

i'm actually surprised they managed to produce a game that is this fun to play on their first try. there are some notable flaws, but for the first edition, they did a good job of trying to stay true to the sport

its impossible to recreate any sports game 100% (tennis is probably the easiest to do), but THQ did well with Undisputed

i'm sure the future versions of the game will be much much better, but i'm still buying this game tuesday

1, 3, 3?

youre my boy ski!!

Haha. It is early.

Does anyone have the gif of Diego walking to the cage chanting with the crowd going "wtf?" after each chant? Not sure if I saw that here or somewhere else.

Don't make fun of Bobby Lashley and his pro wrestling background. The former WWE star said he was incensed by the fact that his opponent Mike Cook came to the cage in a lucha libre mask a la Nacho Libre.

Lashley is generally a polite, sportsman but he refused to touch gloves with Cook. He charged Cook in the opening seconds and missed with a huge right. Cook made the mistake of dropping his head. Lashley, a big MMA heavyweight at 6-foot-3, 249 pounds, grabbed onto Cook's head with his left arm. From there, he used his bulk to lean on Cook and it took just a few seconds for Cook to wilt under Lashley's weight. Lashley flattened out Cook (7-4) and re-positioned his right arm to cinch on a choke. Cook's legs could be seen quivering and referee John McCarthy had to step in to stop the fight (video). All that in just 24 seconds during Maximum Fighting Championship 21 at the River Cree Resort and Casino just outside Edmonton, Alberta

didnt know he was doing MMA but that dude is freaking HUGE!! it doesnt seem fair honestly because the testing in the WWE isnt nearly as strict as the UFC. I mean some of these guys are even straight up juicing. So you cycle in the WWE, get all rocked up, get off the stuff and come to MMA and overpower people. How fair is that?

Lashley needed to get through this fight unscathed because he has a stiff test against freakazoid Bob Sapp (pictured below on the right) right around the corner. Sapp, a former NFL player, NCAA All-American at Washington and a huge crossover star in Japan, is 6-4, 345. He doesn't have much stamina but he is dangerous for about 4-5 minutes. Sapp (10-3-1) and Lashley will meet on June 27 in Biloxi, Miss.

Damn. Lashley looked pissed off. Even in WWE, Lashley had no ability to look pissed off. thats why he wasnt as appreciated there. He had no mean streak. Im guessing the nacho libre mask hit a nerve.

Secondly, He was actually pretty damn good at wrestling before he went to WWE. Dont knock a guy cause he wanted to get paid. ( and a woman ala kristal marshal )

apparently theres a good chance that Rampage & the winner of Rashad/Machida will be coaches for TUF 10

........oh joy

I really wish they would use lesser names for TUF, and never, eeeeeeevvvvver, Champs.

I guess it wasn't too bad missing Hendo and Bisping for a while.

What are the chances Nick Diaz gets a coaching gig one day?:silly: Hate to see him go so long without a fight, but would love to see him on the show.

There's a great chance he'd gogoplata one of the aspiring fighters in the kitchen. I second that suggestion. But even if they do want him to come back I doubt he'd become a coach unless he puts a long string of wins together.

Alright SU, you got yourself a gauntlet bet. Sig lasts 'til UFC 99. If I win you keep your sig, if you lose you keep your sig. It's win/win for you. Only thing you have to put on there is "Damn double's gf is hot check her out:"

I don't know. Being a TUF coach could be his re-introduction to the UFC.
