lol no he was just caught off guard, he had just come out of the washroom.

I gotta say tho, I could have done without him walking with a limp like a thug, and the baggy clothes.

As for the tattoo, I'm not sure if your being serious, but the fleur de lys is on the quebec flag. thats where it's derived from. (unless he really does sit on his couch on sundays and cheer on reggie and drew!

You serious? GSP walks like a thug? He talks like a high school kid that plays with his TI-83 calculator all day. He sounds like a nerd that would put a serious hurtin on you, and he walks like he's packin' heat?

Didn't know that about the flag, but I think it'd be funny to ask him if he's a Saints fan. That's until he pulls his gun out on me. "Hey Georgeseses! And when the Saints, go marchin in!" Once he'd be confused I'd ask him if he's a NO Saints fan because of his tattoo. Hopefully will spring a conversation.

Sam Vasquez, 35, Dies of Long-Term MMA Competition.

http://www.sherdog.com/news/news.aSunday, December 02, 2007

by Sherdog.com Staff

Regulated mixed martial arts has experienced its first casualty.

Sam Vasquez, who was stopped by Vince Libardi on Oct. 20 at the Toyota Center in Houston, died Friday at the age of 35, according to a report by TheFightNetwork.com.

The Harris County Medical Examiner, which confirmed Vasquez passed at 8:15 p.m. CT, has not yet released the cause of death, the report said.

After enduring separate surgeries to remove blood clots from his brain as well as a massive stroke, Vasquez was discharged from downtown Houston's Saint Joseph Medical Center Critical Care Unit and transferred to an area hospice on Nov. 26.

On Wednesday Sandra Vasquez, the fighter's wife, told Sherdog.com, "He's about to go." Two days later, Vasquez, the father of a 7-year-old boy, lost his battle with the apparent affects of a regulated mixed martial arts fight.

Vasquez joins Douglas Dedge as the second known fighter to lose his or her life due to complications stemming from a MMA bout. Following an unregulated contest in the Ukraine on March 16, 1998, Dedge collapsed and died.

Vasquez, who was licensed to compete by the Texas Boxing and Wrestling Program, took rapid combinations and a hard right punch to the chin from Libardi (4-3) in the third round.

In his third professional fight -- each of which were promoted by Saul Soliz, a veteran trainer who has worked with several UFC champions and a host of local Texas fighters, including the fallen Vasquez -- the referee allowed Vasquez (1-2) to stand after he was dropped. When the fighter subsequently collapsed the bout was called.

Repeated attempts to reach Soliz for comment went unreturned.

Eight minutes elapsed while Texas-mandated EMTs attended to the incapacitated Vasquez, who was eventually placed onto a stretcher and supported with a neck brace. His exit from the arena to Saint Joseph Medical Center was marked with a slight, occasional seizure visible to the cage-side audience.

Vasquez's hospital stay was first complicated by what doctors called a large "acute clot" that formed within the brain and required surgery on Nov. 4 to relieve pressure. The first clot was not a result of the initial injury Vasquez suffered, said his wife, Sandra. A "rare" second clot developed soon afterwards, said Vasquez's doctor, demanding another invasive procedure.

Listed in critical condition, the fighter was placed in a medically induced coma after suffering a stroke on Nov. 9 that prompted Vasquez's family to contact LifeGift, an organ donation center.

Like in the case of Dedge, concerns about Vasquez's pre-fight health have surfaced. At his age, Vasquez would have been required to undergo extensive pre-fight medical screening to gain a license in Texas.

Steve Bruno, a spokesperson for the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, said federal laws prohibit his agency from disclosing particular information regarding a fighter's application.

Prior to Vasquez's death, Bruno said the state has no plans for any sort of moratorium on mixed martial arts competition.

Poor Ross Pointon... tough career.

indeed, haven't seen a cut that bad since Marvin Eastmann

on another note, CSAC finally ruled on the Sherk situation. they did not overturn their ruling, but they did reduce his suspension to 6months. He's eligible to fight in January, no word if he will be stripped of the title.

Anyone watching the TUF semi-finals right now?

I'm flipping back and forth between that and the Spurs-Mavs game. I hope it's George and Mac in the finals. I think that would be the best fight. Tommy doesn't have any skills other than being a big dumb animal. I'm more looking forward to seeing Huerta and Guida. That should be a great fight.

Eye poke, rock him with a right since George's left eye was taken out, don't let George recover.

I'm really disappointed in George saying that he was ready so quickly when he could have taken 5 minutes to recover from the eye gouge... Instead he went back into the fight with his left eye closed.

Well, Mac Vs Tommy. Mac is probably going to win.

George got poked in the eye, but that happened because he spent the entire fight on his heels forcing his opponent to try to grab him for 3 minutes. Hughes called it Tommy was just too strong for George. Despite all the talk about the greatness of George it was clear that he was afraid to engage in that fight.

Bottom line, Hughes wins the ultimate fighter. Like he said, it's not about the start but the finish. Serra's fighters are gone and Serra can't make the fight with Hughes. He is completely gone now and may only be seen on the finale if he manages to score a ticket.

Poetic justice. Exactly what Serra deserves for being such a ****y punk the entire show and for constantly, incesantly making fun of Hughes. I'll say it again, I'm not a huge Hughes fan but Serra really showed his ass the entire show with the name calling and constant insults. Karma is a biatch and her fat ass sat right on Serra's tiny little head.

Eye poke or not it was just a matter of time before Tommy connected. George was running scared and IMO showed his true colors. He exudes confidence when faced with a lesser opponent but when faced with someone he knows can turn the lights out with one punch he wilted. This just goes to show just how freaking strong Tommy is. How can you not like him? He's a big dumb ox but he's out there putting it all on the line and just over powering people. Not Sean Sherk type steroid strength just good old fashion **** strong farm boy muscle these little "technicians" around. You've got to love it. It's like a Vega with a 454 blowing the doors off a Viper. It doesn't get any better than this.

As far as the final, I think Mac better be on his game or he'll get rolled as well. He's got the tools to put Tommy away but does he have the guts? If he plays timid and lets Tommy get him out of his game it's all over. He's going to have to submit Tommy because I think Tommy's chin is too good for a KO at 170 unless it's from a kick. :2cents:

I'd have found it incredible if George would have beat Mac anyway. Mac is undersized and the kid is a straight up talented fighter. Tommy is tough, but I think Mac is just going to out-game him. Mac knows what he's doing out there. Tommy has to pull out all stops and keep Mac standing, right until that one opportunity to shoot reveals itself. Mac is better on the ground, but we've seen Tommy rip **** on top before.

Mac is a good fighter, but compared to the rest of the talent on the show, he's a great fighter. His natural division is 155 so i expect him to drop win or lose in the finale. Quite honestly, i don't understandy why he was on the show to begin with. He's fought in alot of big fights with big time promotions including Pride. The rest of the cast was pretty much up and comers with limited experience.

Tommy will be beast in 2yrs if he gets with the right camp. He's freaky strong, but he's still one-dimensional. He relies on his wrestling and strength to win fights, that will only take him so far.

I've thought the same thing. "One of these things is not like the others."

It's pretty intriquing isn't it? On one hand you've got a naturally smaller guy using technique to beat up on naturally bigger guys and on the other hand you've got a freak of nature who uses strength to run through people who are technically stronger. That's why the finally should be pretty damn good.

Personally I think strength will win out over technique 9 out of 10 times used wisely. Anderson Silva will be beat by a guy who is strong enough to clinch while keeping him close enough to stay away from those knees. Hendo might be that guy with him dropping down in weight. He's obviously strong enough because he's spent his entire career fighting bigger guys. We'll see. Randy used his strength to keep his last two opponents close to him in the clinch which enabled him to use dirty boxing and impose his will against them. By staying close he neutralized Tim and Nog's kicks and striking. 170lb will be interesting, I don't think anyone is as strong as Tommy in this weight class. Sean Shirk has been bullying lightweights around with his strength since they reestablished the division.

Again, strength means nothing if not used properly and coupled with a good chin. You're going to have to take a shot to get close enough to use your strength to your advantage. Now none of this applies when you take Royce Gracie destroying guys twice his size into consideration. I don't know what I'm talking about, WTF?

i was following you for a minute, then i fell off

I still think St. Pierre is the strongest in the division. He doesn't look it, but he cuts from around 190 and he has stuffed takedowns from Hughes, Koscheck, and Sherk, who are some of the best wrestlers the UFC has to offer.

I don't disagree with you completely, Zo, but isn't Hughes a ****y jerk ALL the time? Didn't he treat Serra like a non-event leading up to the series and didn't he act like Serra would be no competition even for GSP?

I also thought Serra laid it on a little thick throughout the show, but he could have had good reason. Hughes isn't exactly "Miss Congeniality."

If you read some of my earlier posts I've admitted that Hughes can be a pompous ass. The TUF that he coached in with GSP was enough to piss Serra off but come on, Serra has taken it way too far. The entire show was Serra mocking Matt and calling him names. How old is this guy? Hughes might be an arrogant hick but he didn't resort to the petty crap that Serra has. Honestly I've seen a totally different Matt Hughes during this TUF. Maybe he watched the last one he was in and realized just how much of an ass he was being. I don't know but I've seen a totally different guy, haven't you?

As far as coaching, Serra is hands down a better coach than Hughes. That doesn't make him a better fighter. The show isn't calle the The Ultimate Coach, it's the Ultimate Fighter and obviously Hughes did something right. Serra and Hughes come from two totally different ends of the spectrum. Hughes with his "high school football/wrestling" coach mentality and Serra with his "hey buddy, try this" mentality. Hughes admitted he didn't come on the show to make friends. Did you seen his training clips last night? Dude he was banging with his guys. He wasn't just going through the motions. Maybe that's the difference between team Hughes and team Serra. Serra's boy although trained better technically were soft and Hughes' guys weren't I don't know, againg I'm talking out my ass. I'm a firm believer in training the way you play, no matter what sport it is. :2cents:

Hughes is 41-5 and known as one of the greatest fighters at his weight class MMA has ever had to offer. Serra is a 9-4 pretender that has been ****y for as long as he's been fighting. Before anyone even knew who this guy was he was showing off and talking smack. I don't know about you guys but Hughes' reaction to Serra is typical considering the situation. If some upstart talks smack about the Patriots you think they are going to react with respct? No. They are going to look into the camera and say in an arrogant tone "who?!"

MMA is a sport in which anyone can be knocked out on any given night and Serra got his belt via a shocking knock out. No one in the sport thinks he's good enough to keep it. He talked smack the entire show about how his fighters were better, blah blah blah. Result: No Serra fighters in the finals. That is why you don't BS early.

Serra mocking Hughes was funny as hell to me. I don't like either one to be honest. Not that big a deal to me either way.

and i don't think it would've mattered who coached them, but Mac and Tommy would've been in the finals anyway.
