Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson is fighting this Saturday in an EliteXC show. He's fighting Bo Cantrell (10-10).

My opinion on Kimbo is that he has taken great steps towards becoming a legitiment MMA fighter. I read an article on him the other day. He talked about how he was always high during his street fights. He said he hasn't had sex in 4 months, hasn't done weed in a long time, he feels pure and ready for professional fighting. Also, he trains with Bas Rutten, whom I think is one of the best MMA trainers out there. I can't wait to see where this guy can go.

I am impressed with the fact that he's making Bas happy with his training routine. That shows me something right there. However, I'll reserve judgment on Kimbo until he fights some bigger talent. Choking out a senile Ray Mercer is not enough for me to start praising an internet backyard fighter. (If he had out-boxed Ray, I be VERY impressed.)

The Mercer fight was considered an exhibition match. Thus Kimbo's record is 0-0. This will be his first official match. I will praise Kimbo on the premise that he's taking professional fighting seriously. Although, the money probably kinda sorta helped his decision to leave that life.

Rutten co-signing him should tell everybody how serious Kimbo is taking his training. I'm not sure how he will do, but it'll be interesting to watch it play out.

I'm sure Kimbo is taking his fighting seriously, especially training with Bas, but Bo Cantrell isn't going to be a challenge for him. Cantrell's has lost his last 4 fights, 3 of them in a row were KOs and this last fight he lost to Brad Imes (the guy who lost to Rashad on that season of TUF) by gogoplata :laugh:

The only other victory by gogoplata I know is when Nick Diaz beat Gomi but was overturned into a NC because he was smoking too much weed.

Speaking of Nick Diaz, he's fighting in the same event as Kimbo this Saturday. I wish the best for him. Getting busted for weed seemed to hurt him big time.

A gogoplata happened at an amature card I was attending. A fighter gogoplata'd a guy, but dislocated the guys shoulder when he locked the leg. Gruesome, and I think the shoulder popped right back in to place, but the match ended because his arm came out. The dude was screaming like he got shot. But he ended up calming down and standing up for the results. It was funny seeing him shake his head in the ring afterwards like W-T-F happened? My jaw was dropped the whole time. First and only time I've seen that move executed, and the choke didn't even take effect.

Lesnar's First Opponent Announced - Frank Mir

Super Bowl Showdown set between Lesnar and Mir

A classic case of putting your money where your mouth is, new UFC signee Brock Lesnar – who has made no bones about wanting to fight the best the heavyweight division has to offer – will make his Octagon debut at UFC 81 on February 2nd against none other than former UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir.

The bout will be held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada on the eve of Super Bowl XLII.

“It’s an interesting matchup,” said UFC President Dana White. “Lesnar is a great wrestler, a good athlete, and this is definitely gonna be a big test for him. Frank Mir is a former world champion who is coming off a big win over Antoni Hardonk, and he’s looking to get his career back on track while Lesnar’s looking to walk into the UFC and prove what type of fighter he’s gonna be by trying to knock him off.”

The 6-3 ½, 265 Lesnar (1-0) comes to the UFC with stellar college wrestling credentials that saw him earn All American status four times, win Big Ten Championships twice, and also win the 2000 NCAA National Championship. After leaving the University of Minnesota, the South Dakota-born Lesnar gained fame as a professional wrestler and also had a stint with the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings. In 2007, he made his mixed martial arts debut and annihilated Min Soo Kim in just 69 seconds on June 2nd.

“This guy’s not trying to duck anybody,” said White of Lesnar. “He knew once he got in the UFC that he was gonna fight tough guys.”

28 year old Las Vegan Frank Mir (10-3) was destined for stardom from the moment he stepped in the UFC Octagon, and he lived up to all expectations when he submitted Tim Sylvia in 50 seconds in 2004 to win the UFC Heavyweight Championship. Unfortunately, Mir’s career ground to a halt when a serious motorcycle accident later that year forced him to the sidelines for almost two years. His eagnerness to return forced him into some spotty performances when he did return in 2006, but at UFC 74 in August, Mir was back in top notch form as he submitted Antoni Hardonk in just 77 seconds.

Imes has won his last TWO fights by gogoplata. Crazy for a heavyweight.

Raising kids harder than KOing foes for Alexander

Houston Alexander chuckles and begs you not to make him out to be Superman.

After carefully examining the facts, though, you arrive at the inescapable conclusion that Superman is the perfect nickname for the fast-rising UFC light heavyweight contender.

And no, it's not because of his two knockout victories in his first two UFC fights, which took a combined one minute and 49 seconds, though his victims, Keith Jardine and Alessio Sakara, may be buying into the Superman hype a bit at this point.

And neither is it because of his ability to bench press as much as 450 pounds, or more than twice his body weight, because being a star weight lifter is no guarantee of success as a mixed martial arts fighter.

Alexander, who faces his biggest challenge on Nov. 17 at UFC 78 in Newark, N.J., when he meets Thiago Silva, earns the Superman moniker every day as the single parent of six children.

Taking care of six children between the ages of 5 and 16 is a big enough job for a small squadron of adults. For a guy who has emerged as one of the world's elite light heavyweights, with all the training and business demands that entails, to also be able to cook and clean around the house each day is super hero kind of stuff.

Cooking, cleaning and beating people up makes for a full day.

Admittedly, though, the image of one of mixed martial arts' baddest men pushing a vacuum cleaner and cleaning a toilet is priceless.

"But you tell all those UFC fans, they come to my house and they'll see me pushing that vacuum," he says, laughing. "I'm no different than they are. I have to clean the house, too."

He's already begun to clean house at 205 pounds, one of the UFC's deepest divisions. Alexander made his UFC debut in May, when he took a bout against Jardine on short notice.

At the time, it looked like Jardine was moving inexorably toward a title shot and there was a lot of backlash about the UFC selecting a guy precious few had heard of as his opponent.

Looking back, the hubbub seems ridiculous, but Alexander said he understood the concern.

"They didn't know me," Alexander said of the UFC's fan base. "Keith fought on TV (on the UFC's reality series, The Ultimate Fighter, on Spike TV) and he was well known. There was a way of doing things, where if you beat this guy then you fought that guy type of thing.

"But to a lot of the people, I came out of nowhere. I didn't, really, and I never doubted that I would win that fight. But because people didn't know who I was or what I was capable of doing, they sort of doubted me."

Alexander then went out and caught Jardine with a combination that made a sound so loud it resonated like the casino implosions that have occurred up and down the Las Vegas Strip.

It took only 48 seconds and Alexander was the winner.

"You do that and then all of a sudden, things change a lot for you," Alexander said. "The thing that pleased me, I got another fight (in the UFC)."

And though it took longer, this time, Alexander put those extra 13 seconds to good use. He pulverized Sakara at UFC 75 in London, making the battle of strikers essentially a one-man show.

He returns at UFC 78 with a potential 2008 title shot looming if he can get past Silva. And though Silva is 10-0 and was impressive in defeating Tomasz Drwal at UFC 75, he's facing a totally different type of opponent.

He attacks with a ferocity rarely seen in the fight game.

"If this guy is to beat me, he has to be a terror," Alexander said.

He's seen all kinds in his lengthy fighting career, much of which was completed in obscurity in small towns around the Midwest.

Alexander figures he has around 40 wins, though his official record has him at just 8-1. But regardless of whether the missing fights were non-sanctioned or amateur bouts, they were fights just the same and provided Alexander with the experience to be able to take on the likes of world-class fighters such as Jardine and Sakara.

And though his future will in large part ride upon how he performs against Silva, it's not causing him to lose so much as a wink of sleep.

"Pressure is raising six kids by yourself," Alexander said. "That's pressure. As far as fighting, I'm 35. I've got a lot of fights. However you want to categorize those fights I had, there still was someone standing across from me intending to hurt me. You learn from those – or at least you try – and after you've had a few, you don't feel any pressure.

"My pressure comes from wanting to do the right thing for my kids. I want them to have the best life possible. And there is so much work that has to be done. Fighting is just a job. Kids are work, believe me when I tell you that. You want pressure, that's pressure."

great story, i saw an interview online with him, and he was real humble about keith going on to headline a ppv despite having loss to him. I hope he does well, especially considering he isn't the youngest dude around.

Yeah, I saw the interview with him on UFC.com, he was extremely humble. In the post fight interview after he beat Jardine, he was real intense and came off a little arrogant. But after seeing him speak, I realize it was completely "in the moment". Having to take care of 6 kids by himself is insane. How does he find time to make himself so freakin' strong...and so good at fighting!

If there's one guy in the LHW division I could choose not to take a knee from, it's Houston.

Wasn't Jardine being really arrogant before the fight and at the weigh-ins and stuff since Houston was basically a no-name at the time?

I think if he beats Thiago Silva he's going to get a big-name fight.
