Holdman shines in camp

By David Elfin

THE WASHINGTON TIMES

June 19, 2006

Warrick Holdman figured he wasn't the only one unsatisfied with his performance for the Washington Redskins last season. So he was a little surprised the team wanted to re-sign him this spring.

"I felt like I could do it last year, I just wasn't doing it," said Holdman, who started seven games but made just 23 tackles in his first season with the Redskins. "That could be attributed to [poor] conditioning, not knowing the defense. Whatever it was, I didn't get the job done."

Holdman is not only back, he is tentatively set to fill the weak-side vacancy created when three-time Pro Bowl linebacker LaVar Arrington left in March -- even though Holdman hardly resembled the Pro Bowl-caliber linebacker he was with the Chicago Bears before he injured his left knee in 2002. Rocky McIntosh is the only credible alternative now that pass-rushing specialist Chris Clemons has been switched to the strong side behind Marcus Washington.

"Warrick is having a great camp," said assistant head coach-defense Gregg Williams. "His suddenness without pads on is excellent. Right now, Warrick has the edge."

Despite the lack of experienced competition, the 30-year-old Holdman is far from secure in his status as a starter.

"I'm in better shape and I know the defense a little better so I feel more comfortable, but I can't go in saying it's my job to lose," said the 233-pound Holdman, who's about 10 pounds lighter than he was last season. "I have to bust my butt every day. Rocky's younger and faster. He was in high school when I was in the NFL. [Linebackers coach Dale Lindsey] challenged me. He asked me whether I wanted to be the linebacker I was in Chicago or the linebacker I was last year.

"It's all up to me. I owe the Redskins for last year. I know they expected more of me. That wasn't me. I owe them a good season."

reports have noted Warrick in much better shape this yr. I think he's got a big chip on his shoulder to prove everyone wrong this yr, but I think he can have a really good season this yr. Said he was eating a lot of steak last yr going around in free agency and was conditioning his body. Said he's lost 10 pounds and gotten alot quicker so I hope he can start this yr so Rocky can come along mid season

Anyone else a little surprised by this move? I guess I've never read this anywhere else and it seems like just an afterthought thrown into the story. What do you think this means for Spencer Havner? I thought he would be the backup to Washington this year.

Good to know Holdman KNOWS he sucked last year just like we all saw. Hopefully, he is taking advantage of his second chance....it sounds like it. It would be nice going into the season with a veteran playing like he did 3-4 years ago so that Rocky can be broken in gradually. Williams does not like to start rookies.

The move to the strong side is not good news for Clemons' fans. He had a lot of trouble on the run on the weak side...having to deal with tight ends and tackles will just make it tougher to make the team.

I disagree.

Putting him on the strong side puts him behind Griffin and Carter.

That will overload that side passing rushing wise. Since pass rushing is what Clemons shows he can do best, it would be real hard for folks to handle Griffin, Carter, and Clemons on one side. (Or Griffin, Carter, and Washington for that matter. :) ).

Yeah, I'm surprised and disappointed. I was hoping that Clemons would emerge as the guy on the weak side; I was pleased with his athleticism and (though I was excited about Holdman when we signed him, based on his performances with the Bears) I am not too keen on Holdman after last year. I'm not sure what to expect from the rookie. I thought Clemons might break through this year like Antonio Pierce did a few years ago, but it's not a good sign for Clemons that he himself is talking about just making the team. Well, I have to trust the coaches. I wish we didn't have a position like weakside LB with such uncertainty, but I guess it stands out because the starters seem pretty much set at most of the other positions (besides part-time positions like blocking TE and fullback).

Exactly. We're a defense built on the belief of certain personnel in certain packages. You can believe that in 3rd and long situations this year you'll see a front seven of Daniels, Evans, Griffin and Carter with a LB core of Clemons (prob. blitzing) Marshall and everyone else is defensive backs

Teams will have to stay in max protect or they will pay. And in max protect with 5 DB's and Marshall on the TE we're bound to get the sack or the INT.

*edit* How could you ever take #53 out.

Kind of a loaded complement, the kind you expect from Coach Williams. His suddenness without pads... ? I guess we'll see if that translates to on-field performance. Maybe last season snapped some sense into his head. We all knew he was sub-mediocre and even terrible at times. Looks like he knows it, too.

I find this post very, very encouraging. I was disappointed in his performance last season. This post indicates that he recognizes that he needs to work very hard to get back to the form he had previously and it sounds like he is making that committment. If he gets back to LB he once was that will be great news for our defnese.

Carter's going to play the weak side and Daniels is moving over to the strong side. - Blitzing from the strong side means that now QB's will see him coming more often.

Traditionally, offenses are "right-handed" and the TE usually lines up next to the RT making it the strong side. In this instance, it sounds like Daniels will be the LE and Marcus Washington/Chris Clemons would be lined up behind him over the left side of the defense. Now if the TE lines up next to the tackle, I'm not sure if we'd flop DEs or just the LBs.

If this article is accurate, it sounds like the WLB position will be a 2-man race between Holdman and McIntosh. And Clemons could be a surprise cut if he doesn't figure out a way to contribute other than the occasional pass rush.

That kinda sounds like Williams-speak for Rocky will be the starter by week 6 to me.

Maybe Holdman just had a crappy year, like Brunell's first here. Just looking at how he played last year I wasn't happy about him coming back, but if the coaches are confident that he can play like he used to then who am I to say otherwise?

why would people be upset that Holdman is having a good offseason and looks to be a contributor in 2006?

the last time I checked the Redskins needed to fill 7-8 linebacker spots on the roster and if we can get solid performances out of a veteran guy making near the minimum we will all be better off :)

if McIntosh has to wait 5-6 games to get his chance, so be it.
