  1. Yes - though also by name companies like AT&T and Verizon, as well. They already had the easements, so they could lay copper/fiber or whatever much easier than anyone else. Cable TV companies being the only other legit players at the time. As you mentioned, you would need a huge amount of money to startup an ISP - Google managed it but only in a few large metro areas https://fiber.google.com/newcities/ Getting all those easements is really, really hard/expensive, and in some cases probably impossible as tshile mentioned with exclusivity agreements On top of which, ISPs have been trying to shutdown municipal broadband/WiFi http://beta.latimes.com/business/hiltzik/la-fi-hiltzik-cable-municipal-broadband-20160812-snap-story.html The more I think about it, the more the internet is more like a road network. Imagine all the roads were privately owned, by say The Road Company. and you would pay some amount per month to be able to drive, like an EZ pass. You pay the same amount no matter where you going. Perhaps there would be a fast lane that some would pay a little more for, but still they wouldn't pay depending on where they went or what they did. But now say let's say some successful business chain like Five Guys pops up, that causes traffic to spike. The Road Company sees this and gets greedy and says "Hey, why don't we start our own hamburger joint, after all our customers are using our roads to get to Five Guys and Five Guys is getting all this money". So The Road Company startsup their own chain (or more like, buy one out, let's say McDonalds), and then decide to charge an additional toll if you exit at Five Guys, but there would be no charge for McDonalds. Or perhaps they do something shady like do some "construction" on the Five Guys exits which throttles traffic, while the McDonald's exit is well maintained and clear. Without net neutrality rules, The Road Company will be allowed to do that. You might come along and say - well the solution is simple, if the consumers' experience with The Road Company is poor, surely the market will fix it and some investor(s) will come along and start up their own competitor to provide better service. The problem is there are substantial capital and legal barriers to entry for building your own road network, such that no one has made a serious attempt in decades, when cars were first being built and the challenges were substantially less.
  2. I hate they get to play a division that has been mostly ass for the last 20 years, with the brief exception when the Jets had that elite defense. And not a legit franchise QB outside of Tom Brady in that whole division, since Marino retired. Must be nice when you're pretty much guaranteed to win 6 games a year.
  3. So I'm guessing the deadline for being on the ballot is past, so if Luther Strange wanted to mount an independent campaign, it would have be as write-in ?
  4. I agree, it crossed the line of credulity (one its greatest strengths) in season 4, but still wanted to see it wrapped up.
  5. Dang. Spacey was a great actor. Now every single thing he touched has turned to sheet.
  6. England is the Washington Caps/Nats of the soccer world.
  7. Maybe if he had said something like "the only one who's had a worse week in the news than the Giants was Harvey Weinstein", he wouldn't have had to apologize.
  8. I was thinking of getting a dog soon. The two main problems I have are 1) I live in a an apartment (they do allow dogs, with breed restrictions) 2) I live alone and work full time, so a puppy is probably out, though since I'm only 10 minutes away coming back on my lunch break would be possible but we are talking about leaving the dog alone for 4-5 hours minimum each day, which I've heard is way too long for younger puppies. Also while I would have no problem walking the dog 1-2 times every day (morning/evening), I'm not really energetic enough that I could go on 3 mile runs. However there is a grassy area nearby where I see people all the time with dogs off leash, so if it was a dog that like to play fetch or something that would be doable.
  9. I don't really see the need to rifles with semi auto capability to be available to the public. Its too easy modifable to near full auto with the bump stock. For hunting bolt action or single shot should be sufficient.
  10. I think his fight is going to be disappointing because neither of these guys has anything to fight for. They're both getting huge paydays and have nothing really to prove.
  11. We could make bigger bombs - Castle Bravo all the way back in 1954 was ~15 MT - but its much more effective to have many, smaller warheads that one big one. After a certain yield point a nuke isn't going to leave anything living/functional/standing, so its a question of how big do you make the kill area. Due to the inverse square law, the destructive potential of a cluster of smaller warheads is much more effective than one big one.
  12. I don't see the point of a soft Brexit - you still have to follow the EU's laws and regulations, but now you don't get to vote on them ?
  13. Tunnels are really expensive. There's no way building a tunnel all the way from NY to DC is going to be cost effective
  14. Why the worry? Did you have any alcohol, tobacco, or firearms on you?
  15. I know this is a bit late, but I never knew Ned Flanders played for the Lakers
  16. Just saw it. Without revealing too much, my basic review is a "meh". Alot of recycled plot devices/themes from previous installments, without really adding anything unique to the series. I would have rather waited for the $4 instant video rental, than shelling out the $14 in the theaters.
  17. Did the Socialist party actually win any constituencies or is that just dirt on my screen?
  18. Hasn't posted since January, but apparently he's still lurking as it said he visited a few hours ago
  19. Confused me as well, although Northern Ireland did vote to remain 55%, I don't know if that would push enough people towards unification. As per the Good Friday Agreement, the UK should allow for a referedum to be called in Northern Ireland which would honor a simple majority deciding to leave. Ironically it should be easier for N Ireland to leave than Scotland. Apparently a substantial majority in N Ireland wants to remain in the UK, otherwise you would have Sinn Fein among others calling for this referedum long ago. I can't find any poll numbers either before or after Brexit though. Personally if I was in Scotland or N Ireland and supported remaining in the EU while considering voting for leaving the UK, I would wait until the dust settles wrt France and the Netherlands. If there was a Frexit or a Netherexit (ok that last one is silly), the whole EU might implode making a reunification for the sole purpose of remaining in the EU moot.
  20. I thought the First Order was just a rebranding of the Empire. Which kind of makes sense if you lose a war. Kind of like how Germany used to be known as Prussia, or the breakup of the Soviet Union
  21. Which is why I liked Finn more than any other character. He was the only character that wasn't just a rehash character from previous movies. My pet theory is he was fanservice to Kyle Kataran (or possibly Crix Nadine, who was also an imperial defector but had a really minor role in the movies) Rogue One's characters on the other hand, mostly stunk. Except for Churri (sp?) and his wingman whose name I can't remember, who didn't even get that much screen time but were far more interesting than the "main" characters.
  22. I don't think it matters one way or another. Nothing is going to prevent the US and UK from trading with one another after the Brexit. A stronger dollar vs the pound is just going to mean the UKs exports will be cheaper for US customers, while US exports will be more expensive for those in the UK. Of course this is going to hurt companies who export to the UK, but don't really consume UK goods (for example, Apple). However, it helps companies and individuals who do alot of importing from the UK, but little of any exporting to the UK. Offhand, I can't think of any companies like this, but according to US census, these do exist to the tune of $57 billion per year (vs $56 billion for exports) https://www.census.gov/foreign-trade/statistics/highlights/top/top1512yr.html, so its probably a wash As for the UK's "voice" in the EU, can you give an example where it has advanced US interests in the EU? I can give at least one non-example, with the that GMOs, which the UK seems about as opposed as most other EU countries
  23. The referedum was never binding. Even if it was, the court is now basically saying, that Parliament can't be bound by anyone (even itself), so it would be moot.
  24. Finished Luke Cage this weekend. Great acting. I thought the plot was a bit flimsy. Cottonmonth didn't do it for me as a villain. He was just your everday two bit ganster, granted a successful one. Another problem is that Cage's opponents were zero match for him, because of his superpowers. Except Daredevil is the best of the Netflix Marvel series because of its villains, although Cage may have slightly better supporting roles. Honestly I don't want to see Daredevil or Punisher "team up" Luke Cage / Jessica Jones. He would have nothing to do. Part of the reason why I didn't like Batman vs. Superman, not to the mention Flash/Arrow crossovers
  25. This would be like Ovechkin joining the Penguins
