  1. If universities operate for profit though, they shouldn't get the tax-exemption
  2. I was thinking total value, not literally giving him a $50m check to go away. They could keep the deferred payments and offer him say, 50% of his base which is for 4/68. So save $34m which is quite substantial. Only other situation which is close is Fielder. When you factor in insurance and the Tigers pitching in, it only came out to about $36m charge to the Rangers I believe. Edit: Davis base is 17/year or 68 total for the next 4 years.
  3. If the choice was to spend the next four years doing something that makes me miserable for $100 million vs. taking $50 million (or more) to do nothing, I'd probably take the latter deal.
  4. Apparently the solution is to cut out the middleman and bribe the universities directly.
  5. Didn't some UVA rep admit a while a back that the student's ability to pay was factor in admission? This stuff has been going on for a while https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/at-u-va-a-watch-list-flags-vip-applicants-for-special-handling/2017/04/01/9482b256-106e-11e7-9d5a-a83e627dc120_story.html?utm_term=.103481ea315b This isn't the exact article I was thinking of (it a while ago), but this is very similar
  6. Geez, getting started early, aren't they? I thought they would have at least waited for something concrete like the UK attempting to put up a soft border.
  7. Let's say you hire someone to paint your house for say $1000. Halfway through, they say they don't feel like painting houses anymore and decides to quit. Would you say you owed them the full $1000 ?
  8. I'd love for the MLBPA to say that: "We object to the Baltimore Orioles forcing Chris Davis to actually fufill his contract and play baseball" Granted if they tried to do something a bit shady like make him pitch would be one thing (I'm not sure what his contract says about that) Why would it be so controversial for the Os to expect CD to fufill his contract? They work both ways you know Maybe they could just stop paying him because they're "unhappy" about his performance. I'd be totally on the Os side if they do that. In fact, I'd lose a little respect for them if they didn't. Its become a little tiresome seeing fat cat players mailing it in after signing a big contract.
  9. Sure there is. The O's can force CD to at least go through the motions of being a MLB player for the next 4 years. They are not obligated to cut him due to performance reasons. Especially since they probably aren't going to be competitive for the next 3 years at least, that is one card the Os are holding. If its true about CD really hating baseball, he might not want to be forced to play.
  10. Money may not be 100% gone if he's willing to take a buyout. Even 75% of his original salary is substantial savings for the Os. So I'd play him for a few months, and maybe he ends up hating it so much he would approach Elias about retirement. Since we won't be winning many games anyway, its wouldn't really affect the Os to much to stick him at DH at least part time which is usually a vet anyway. Of course that cant go on line indefinitely. At a certain point, MLB might get involved (at least behind the scenes) if Davis continues to be terrible and the O's keep playing him. But it could be a matter of who's willing to blink first.
  11. One benefit of living here, when the O's come out to play the A's, I can get close to the dugout for like $25 🙂
  12. What about for the EU to consider an extension? I can't see a withdrawal of article 50 ever passing parliament, so I think its rapidly approaching a point of no return for a Hard Brexit.
  13. Chance Sicso is destroying ST through 16 ABs he's 438/609/1796 with 4 HRs.
  14. What's the cutoff date to avoid a no deal? I assume its sometime before Mar. 29th.
  15. I'd consider 21/22 to be grown man and thats what they'd be going up against in the NCAA. Some guys reach their peak early. In HS we had a guy who was 6'5 280 pounds as a sophomore. Another who was 6'7 250 Amobi Okoye had just turned 20 when he went into an NFL training camp. Since this is a spring league, most HS graduates are going to be closer to 19 than 18.
  16. Look at how many NCAA players get drafted in the NFL, and start their rookie year and even make the pro bowl. Yet a few months prior to this, those same players were in college and at least scrimmaging against those same 18 year olds. College football teams don't have JV teams like high school because they see no need to separate players. Amobi Okoye had just turned 20 when he entered an NFL training camp. And it being a spring league, the would be more likely closer to 19, unless they leave high school early. I agree it would be tough for a 18/19 year old to make a pro roster even for a second tier league, particularly for positions like line, but I wouldn't entirely rule it out.
  17. If I were the EU, I would just cut bait if they can't get a deal done by the end of March. This has been dragging on for 2.5 years now, and the EU has been wasting time negotiating with the UK, when they could have spent time doing other things. The EU is the one holding the cards. They're a much larger economic power. The UK is the one who wants a change the status quo. When the UK exits, the EU won't be the first ones to put up trade or movement barriers. They've bent over backwards for an exit deal, to the extent of giving in to issues they said they weren't going to give in to, which then got shot down by British parliament. They lose face in any future negotiations with other parties if they give in anymore, as well as weakening the union.
  18. If Harper can maintain production. Otherwise that contract could end up being an albatross in a few years.
  19. Because if he declines, then he would have left $160 million on the table.
  20. I'm reading a full no trade clause. Of course Harper could always waive it, but then again he might not.
  21. I suspect the EU is going to tell the UK to go pound sand. Unless there is a drastic measure like a second referendum.
  22. Wish I could find good picture of the Norway-Sweden customs check border. Keep in mind, Norway isn't in the EU, but is in the single market (but not in the customs union, which kind of doesn't make sense, but does, its a long story) But the UK doesn't want to be in the single market or customs union (but somehow they want "access" according to one UK MP ) And they think they're going to get around not having a "hard" border between ROI/NI
  23. True, but I don't think there's ever been an event quite like a hard Brexit. On the other hand, I could also see Parliament salvaging a deal at the last second, if Labor defects and the Tories split like they did before. It could be they're just playing chicken with the EU. I can't see the EU budging much though, because if they make an exception for the UK, you would start see other countries demanding the same special deal, and the EU would implode and it would revert back to a simple FTA.
  24. Almost tempted to bet against the Sterling. But probably not a good idea for a trading neophyte.
