  1. Low requirements of entry and you tend to get the bottom of the barrel. Teachers are required to have a bachelors degree and a masters after a certain amount of time., many police officers don't even have a requirement of an associates degree. They just have to complete the 500+ hours of training and they are free to go. Below are the minimum requirements for a Anne Arundel County Police Officer. Below that is the minimum requirement for a teacher.
  2. That is so damning and frustrating. That would put him at 14 and a minor, which likely wouldn't be on his adult record. This is just an utter failure in so many ways. I'm not sure they signed up for the dangerous part...pathetic. Police slow to engage with gunman because ‘they could’ve been shot,’ official says
  3. This was such a colossal **** up by the police it's amazing. They did everything wrong, ignored lessons learned from other school shootings and just ****ed it up. A policy failure coupled with a police failure gets you this. Ease of access plus a **** show police force with inadequate training and this is the result. The after action report on this is going to be damning and I hope it gets widely released. Every officer should lose their job, the chief should be gone.
  4. The way this is handled changed after Columbine in 99. The after action report is a helluva a read if you have time (Link). The officers on the scene did exactly what they did a Columbine, and it was wrong. It's even worse because one of the highlighted notes is that the Denver SWAT Team took 45 minutes, that was considered fast. The fact that the small town had a standing SWAT Team but didn't make entry is a huge issue, among many other failures. The lessons learned section for first responders starts on document page 59, PDF page 84. --Edit-- If anyone has curiosity AAR reports for many occurrences are available here, IACP Targeted Violence / Active Threat After Action Review.
  5. FY 21 - 22 (Link). Proposed budget was 25 million and change, page 9. Police and Animal control had a budget of $4.058 million. Page 17. (This is where the 40% is coming from). The general fund makes up 10.489 million this fund captures the expenditure of all major city services. The police department makes up 38.6% of that budget. It is the largest segment of that fund, but not 40% of the total town budget. Page 46 - 49 breakout the actual expenditure categories. As with most agencies the largest expenditure is salaries, makes up 58.5% of the budget.
  6. After thinking about this, I don't think you will ever see an outright ban on a specific type of firearm. But, you can make the process of ownership more structured. 1) 28 Day waiting period for all types of firearms 2) Require a safety class be taken prior to purchase, class completed through a local sheriff / police office 3) Background check for all types of firearms with the ability to do live interviews if the a flag is thrown somewhere It doesn't restrict ownership of weapons but it does make the individual interact with other people during the process in a live setting and reduces the ability to same day purchase and use. I used to deer hunt when I was younger, I vividly remember having to take the hunters safety course to get my license. The fact that I could go down and buy a shotgun or rifle today and walk out with it is kind of crazy. I live in Maryland. In theory I could take my government issue PIV card, and my pay stub down to the store and they would give me a gun after running a simple background check. I don't even need to bring my drivers license.
  7. After reading the Canadian requirements I think that would be a good starting point. The majority of it wouldn't fly in the US, but some sections could be taken. Some way of tracking, limiting and vetting individuals prior to ownership. Also, requiring some form of formal training and a mandatory 28 day waiting period for any type of firearm. Imagine if the kid had to wait 28 days, go through safety training and a background check. Somewhere along the lines a flag would pop based on his past behavior. Simple straightforward requirements.
  8. It's on the form RCMP GRC 5592e (Link) Section E & F box 18 & 19. Effectively, if your partner won't sign off they will reach out to them and determine whether or not you meet the standards for receiving the right of ownership.
  9. VOX Article - Older but explains the difference in law Royal Canadian Mounted Police Gun Page
  10. I completely agree with you, standing around for 40 minutes is completely unacceptable. At some point you have to try and honestly they should have tried immediately. It was a massive failure by law enforcement across the board. I was just responding to the lack of national standards and how IMO inadequately trained the US law enforcement profession is. As well as the entire series of events is, at its heart, being a structural issue across many segments. Hell it takes more training to be a massage therapist than a cop, on average. (Source)
  11. Law enforcement training is wild across the country. Their is no national standard, each state has it's own standards. Some have super low entry levels and some have higher requirements. But at the end of the day the average training time for a police officer is 21 weeks in the US. (Source) They are not trained to handle these situations, they are not equipped to handle them. Realistically not a lot of people in the country are trained to handle this type of situation, the issue is we have made it easier for average people to equip themselves with weapons that make them a greater threat to police then the police to them. It's a structurally issue from access of weapons to low entry standards and subpar training. It's all just a massive cluster ****.
  12. You start giving teachers guns and somewhere a kid is going to overpower the teacher and take that gun. My wife is a teacher, she's 5'8" played college sports and still works out. She would get taken out by a lot of the middle school kids she teaches. This idea of arming teachers is so stupid on so many levels...I can't even.
  13. The general idea of any non specially trained person being able to handle this situation is stupid. This is where the good guy with a gun idea falls flat, people have to be trained to deal with high stress environments, they have to be put through them on a daily basis until it becomes muscle memory and an innate reaction.
  14. Buy a house with a enough land to be able to build a five car garage with a four post lift and air tools. I would then buy three specific cars, 1972 Hemi Cuda convertible, 2007 E63 AMG Wagon and 1955 Mercedes Gullwing. I would also love to find a late 80s Jeep Scrambler to work on. Take care of family members bills and pay off mortgages of some of our close friends. Setup a charity to provide food to families and work with schools to make sure no child ever has lunch debt.
  15. That would be correct, a company just can't discriminate based on protected classes. A lot of companies have ethics or moral clauses in their contracts, they may have triggered the clause based on her statements.
  16. Hurricanes and the fact that Puerto Rico’s power grid can barely maintain its current load is a major downside. Disney would be smart to do what PB said take their extra new cash. When someone asks just point to Desantis and say “His choice, ask him.” Don’t give him the fight he wants.
  17. You can start this by properly funding the IRS, people love to cut their budget because it reduces their ability to work on complex audits. My Dad was an SES at the IRS and my mon was 15 in charge of tax exempt orgs. They've had a 2-1 or something similar in place for almost thirty years, you can replace 1 person for every two that leave. The Effects of Increased Funding for the IRS (Source) I agree completely with your entire post.
  18. Yeah, that's a big litmus test and if they supported that and/or thought the election was stolen I would have a smaller friend group. Like Shrek said, people are onions.
  19. I understand that thought process. I've known and still am friends with the same people since we where sophomores in high school, and in some cases earlier. I know their values and I know who they are. We've had long talks about why they voted the way they did. The bottom line is they felt left behind and unrepresented by politicians and wanted to roll a hand grenade into the establishment. I disagree with what they did but they are not the far right fox news all day, OAN and the like. When we stop trying to reach out and understand people we as country are dead. I'm not at the point where I want to give up on that.
  20. This is it...this is your response to everything above. Moving on to the next single line quip offering nothing to support your prior statement or add anything to the conversation. God speed, I'm out. This is pointless, though I do like your takes in the draft thread.
  21. It maybe, but you have to give people a chance to have a conversation. I've got some really good friends of mine who are trump supporters and I can have a conversation with them about policy and the like. We don't get feelings hurt and we are all still friends. That's how the country is supposed to work. This...this I'm completely baffled by.
  22. My man, a meme is not a source. This is getting ridiculous and I'm not sure what your trying to prove here, other than you can't support your statements with anything substantial. I don't know what you do for a living, but in my line of work we have to cite policy and regulation. This is absolutely blowing my mind and I feel like I'm in the Billy Madison debate scene.
  23. Why is it a huge deal? I don't have twitter, facebook, instagram or any of that social media ****. I'm 39 and from what I can tell over the last 22 years of internet usage is that it's an absolute cesspool. Educate me, show me facts that aren't an opinion of someone else. Show me a source that's legit and would stand up to academic scrutiny. I'm open to changing my mind, but I'm not going to do it without hard evidence that's backed up by some type of logical reason.
  24. I'm not sure what you are trying to say here. I don't think anyone has argued with the principal of a person buying a company. I think people think it's funny that a libertarian is complaining that a privately run business is stopping speech. You sign up, you agree to a TOS and that's it. You've made a choice to utilize a business and they can run it how they see fit. Capitalism baby!
