  1. I feel the bust rate is higher in the NFL for these big X receiver types than the slot guys and the Z types, probably because many of the big X types in college are behind their peers on the technical aspects of the game. I would be fine with trying to solve this need in FA vs gambling on a 2nd or 3rd round rookie. Solving the big X spot is important because it would allow Terry to play more Z and slot where he is better equipped and would provide a boost with run blocking
  2. Do you mean physically? The upside with his body type is he is built like a RB and built to absorb hits. I believe he was 230+ at one point in college before trimming down. If genetics play a role, his dad was a college wrestler
  3. He was very very high on him in the preseason. Talked him up on Hoffman’s podcast
  4. On the size piece, the height is one factor but he also has arms that are 2 to 3 inches shorter vs other guys in his size range who are succeeding like Mahomes. Jay’s point on Friday was that Brees played tall, getting on his tippy toes if he needed to. Sam plays small
  5. Did you look at his 2022 tape too? He shares another similarity with Sam, which is a rough season after an elite sophomore season. How does the 2022 tape compare to his 2023 tape?
  6. I agree it is unlikely but they did draft Musgrave too who predictably got hurt, opening up a window for Kraft to play. Need to get creative as there aren’t easy solutions to TE1 outside of signing Schultz to a big deal in FA
  7. Where is this “$10M is the going rate for a backup QB” narrative coming from? Brissett is probably the highest paid backup QB and he made $8M this year. The Heinickes, Minshews etc are in that $4M-$6M range. Veteran backups are not going to be particularly expensive next offseason because that market will be flooded with the likes of Tannehill, D. Jones and others joining them
  8. Fully agree with you. One of the big screwups this year was not letting Lucas play RT and moving Wylie to LG, especially after Charles got hurt. The only RTs worth pursuing in FA are Mike Onwenu and Trent Brown of the Pats. Some will say Jonah Williams but he sucks and will be overpaid due to his first round pedigree. This is, in my opinion, the deepest RT draft ever and we should look to find the solution with our 2nd round pick because we are almost guaranteed a good RT prospect at that pick. I wouldn’t be mad if they signed Onwenu though because he can also play LG We really need a big X and maybe it is worth it for us to overpay Higgins and give him the top 5 WR money he is looking for. Despite the age, I do prefer Mike Evans if he was open to coming here. I think he will be a little cheaper and he is a better deep threat. The guy is also a real leader and it would help to have a first ballot Hall of Famer in the locker room He struggled a lot at green dot LB before Smith got there. I remembered he had like a 30 PFF rating in 2021. We need a green dot type as we already have a Queen type in Jamin
  9. Yep. It’s a shame he had the ejection, injury and then got lost in the depth chart behind BSJ (due to Ron’s loyalty to his vets and Quan taking control of the nickel spot that was eventually going to be his). The two big plays he gave up were that deep pass to Aiyuk on which he got his hand on the ball and the TD to Aiyuk where Purdy seemed to have nearly 10 seconds to throw the ball I am excited to see him vs Lamb. I’m sure Lamb will have a good game but the question will be how difficult Forbes makes it for him to get those yards Sam is watching the rush and panicking when it is near him which is why he is throwing inaccurately. Sam is clearly a momentum QB. If his guys are making plays for him, he goes on a roll. If he makes a mistake, things snowball for him. This aspect to his game is scary
  10. Agreed. In fact, had he not missed a couple games, he would’ve made a case for the Pro Bowl this year with his all purpose yardage total and his TD total. Jay pointed out the deck was stacked against him because the WRs and TEs are bad blockers and this OL lacks strength and athleticism in the run game so they are limited schematically in what they can do. BRob not only showed he is a heck of a pass catcher but he also showed better patience as a runner as the year went on. I know a bunch of you want everyone on this staff gone but props to Randy Jordan and Jennifer King for not only BRob but Rodriguez’s rookie year and Gibson’s improvement through the year. There’s a reason he was one of the few holdovers from Jay’s staff
  11. Hypothetical question: Would you trade the Bears pick to the Packers for Tucker Kraft? Knowing we would have a guy who already looks like a top 10 TE on a rookie deal for three more years on a rookie deal, I think I would. I think the Packers would consider it given Musgrave looked good too before he got hurt
  12. Yep. Huge props to Eberfluss for turning it around after being on the verge of being fired when they played us. Sweat has noted how much better the culture is there than here. I do think they need to look at upgrading Getsy
  13. That’s just not true on Forbes. Since getting destroyed by AJ Brown, he has been a solid corner when he has played. His PFF rating has trended up over the season (he was in the 40s and is now at 55 and ahead of Deonte Banks). I thought he looked okay today. He had good coverage on Aiyuk on that catch down the field but Aiyuk just made a great catch. Asking him to cover Aiyuk for 10 seconds on that TD catch while Purdy had 10 seconds to throw is not reasonable. With a real DB coach who can clean up his technique and a real FS to work with, I think he is going to end up as a solid #2 type of corner, which is not what you want from a first round pick but is not bust territory either. Think Jamin Davis when it comes to level of play
  14. When someone tries to make this argument, it is one heuristic for how intelligent/informed a poster is. We have $100M in cap room in and 4 other picks in the top 100 in the deepest OT class in the past decade. You can both take a QB AND fix the OL this offseason
  15. Did not realize he was from the area. Do you think he would want to come back home all else being equal?
  16. One guy on the Niners everyone should keep an eye on today is Oren Burks. He’s a 28 year old who was a core special teamer until this year. He finally got a chance to be the starting SAM (playing on base downs) after Al Shaair left for Tennessee. He has ran with the opportunity and balled out this season. He had the highest PFF coverage grade for all LBs thru 9 weeks. My guess is he can play green dot ILB. I like that his coverage prowess would balance Jamin’s lack of it. Doesn’t surprise me he is succeeding as a late bloomer. We are seeing this happen with EJ Speed in Indy and others across the league as well. Off ball LB is a difficult position to play in today’s NFL and it can take years to pick it up
  17. I think ATL is the best fit for Wilson if they keep Smith around as the HC. They have been rumored to be the top contender to trade for Fields but, if you are them, why not get Wilson for the minimum and save the draft assets and cap $ (you are probably extending Fields immediately if you trade for him). Next year is also a win now year for Smith if he does stick around - easier bet with a longtime vet like Wilson.
  18. I doubt he does that. After Tyron Smith, he would probably be the best FA tackle as it stands if he were released. Wouldn’t make any sense for him to take a paycut.
  19. I have some respect for folks who were here pre Ron. The drafting was solid before Ron came here and brought his buddies over. There is a decent chance guys like Stokes and Gribble stick around if I had to guess
  20. I also think the rise in QB mobility has decreased the need for elite LT play. Today’s QBs seem to have a better sixth sense to escape blind side pressure in the pocket vs the past. Leno level play is good enough. He is not the issue - LG, C and RT are. If you can get average+ folks in all three roles with a real veteran OL coach, you likely have at least a solid OL next year even if Leno is your starting LT
  21. If we trade Allen, I would almost rather take a 3rd this year and a 2nd next year. It’d be nice to build draft assets for 2025 too because we won’t be getting comp picks. Assuming competent drafting by the FO, it’s also a little better to space out picks for cap reasons On the trade up to get a tackle piece, I hear you but I would rather let the draft come to us
