Santana Moss on Snyder Expressing Doubt About RGIII

WASHINGTON —
Nearly a year removed from Jay Gruden’s announcement of Robert Griffin III as his presumptive 2015 starter, the state of the Washington Redskins looks nothing like it did then.

In General Manager Scot McCloughan first year, Gruden etched his first winning season as a head coach, the Redskins won the NFC East and Kirk Cousins emerged as Washington’s quarterback of the future, while Robert Griffin III watched in sweatpants from the sideline.

A lot had to take place for the latter four to occur, beginning with Redskins owner Dan Snyder hiring an experienced NFL executive to control his team’s personnel. Everything else is a direct result of Snyder’s decision to relinquish control.

“For the first time, on the outside looking in, I can tell you just from being a fan of the game this year that was a big step for the owner to allow them not to let RG play,” longtime Redskins receiver Santana Moss recently told 106.7 The Fan. “I knew how he felt about him. We all felt the same way.”

Moss recounted a conversation he had with Snyder, describing how the Redskins owner had expressed doubt about Griffin’s future prior to the start of the 2015 season.

“I remember talking to him before the season started, before they had the draft, and he asked me questions about him, and you could just tell how concerned he was,” Moss said. “Can he do some of the things that he asked me? And I’m like, ‘Yes, he can do it, but he has to show it.’

“He has to go out there and show that, like Mike Shanahan said, he has to go out there and show that, OK, from the film room, to the practice field to the game field, that you see these transactions happening. If you don’t see that, then you can’t just assume that guy’s going to have it come week one during the season.”

“So to see him sit back and let that play out, to me, that shows his growth in allowing the guys that he has, that he brought in to run the team, take over and try to lead this team to where we’re trying to go,” Moss said.

It was at the NFL Scouting Combine in Feb. 2015 when Gruden surprisingly announced Griffin as the No. 1: “We’ll go into the season with Robert as the No. 1 guy, obviously. And then it’s up to Robert to continue to grow and mature as a quarterback and as a person and moving forward just want to see some improvement.”

Three months later, McCloughan clarified there would be an “open” competition at QB, but it was “Robert’s job to lose.” In another four months, it was “Kirk’s team.”

Moss sympathizes with Snyder as he looks back on this changing of the guard: “You have to understand, when you are that guy that owns that team and you put all your money, all the marbles in, on this one kid that came out of school with the Heisman Trophy, and we had the first year that we had with him, it’s hard to just turn your back and say he’s not going to be that guy again. We was all hoping that. And we still can sit here, and I’m hoping as a fan that he can regain some of that that he did in 2012.”

McCloughan’s biggest accomplishment over the past year was transforming the Redskins into a structurally sound organization by establishing a clear hierarchy, which allowed everything else to fall into place, something not seen in Washington at any previous point since Snyder purchased the team.

“I think now for the first time I can say that, after we got rid of a head coach who I thought a lot of who could help us win games, with Jay being there, we’re starting to get the players that we needed,” Moss said. “You know, I was there for a while and we didn’t have a lot of good players.”

Moss, who played 10 seasons for the Redskins, wasn’t joking: “I’d watch guys come in and come out and leave, and you pay them the big bucks, but I’ve been here, and you haven’t done nothing that you did over there, over here. You hate sitting there seeing, ‘I’m going to get rid of this coach because he’s not playing well.’

“No, he has to play well, or get rid of him.”

Good luck having a personal conversation in this franchise.

A couple of things real quick not quite related to the OP, but just as important:

1)  What Tana is saying makes Dan look good.  REAL good.

2)  THIS is who Dan needs to be talking to.  His FORMER star players.  Tana, CP, Cooley, etc... those are the dudes that will keep Dan out of another mess like this one.  I think they know that, I think Dan knows that, and I think they all genuinely like each other.

Except that Cooley tried to weasel his way back on the team this year and was genuinely miffed he didn't get a chance... nevermind that he was done three years ago and I doubt has gotten any faster, more explosive or become a better blocker since then.

Signing Cooley would have been a Snyder move years ago.

Yep, and Dan handled that perfectly.  He said "Talk to Scot".

My point being how is Cooley one of the guys to keep Snyder out of that mess when he tried to be knee-deep in it only a few months ago... ;)

Nick

And my point is Dan is not an idiot.  He may have a soft spot for his FORMER players, but he knows they are not going to impact the team anymore.  He also hired the best GM in football to run his team.

Cooley can talk all he wants, and does, to Jay, Scot, and Dan.

It's harmless fodder and it's entertaining fodder.

But while that's going on, the 53 man roster is winning football games. ;)

I love Santana Moss.  I think this ties in well to what another poster talked about in terms of not being able to quantify how players affect a locker room, and one of the unseen prices that a team can pay when they bring in high priced FAs.

Draft your core guys.  Let them grow.  Fill the gaps with FAs.  When your core guys perform, pay them accordingly.

I think Scot has really done a great job in selecting his FAs to this point.  I think Goldson and Knighton specifically have been great for our locker room.  This is why I'd be surprised to see either one leave.  I think Scot finds a way to keep them in DC.

And it's certainly not hard to see why it's been so difficult for Dan to let go of the hopes that RG3 would be great again.  ES has had MAJOR issues with it as well. :)

I feel like Cooley was kinda mostly joking about wanting us to sign him. Yes, he probably misses playing, but I bet he also knows he's too old and not in good enough shape to play football anymore realistically.

People seem to be getting mad about him doing that. It's silly.

Oh I think Cooley was serious.  But he's not as realistic about who he is anymore.

Personally I love he and Czaban together.  Best pair in DC radio since Don and Mike for my money.

But we all have that pride in us.  In 2012 I went back to an Army selection course that I passed years before to join an elite unit... got hurt on the 3rd day and drove back home.  Honestly I had no business doing that any more but I wanted to give it a shot.  I don't give Cooley a fault for trying.  I give him a bad mark for throwing a temper tantrum on the air about it, but I also understand.

The important thing is Dan told him who he needed to talking to instead of typing up a contract.

Same thing happened to him under Bruce/Shanny as well.

Wow!  Did not know that.

Well... then Cooley is a perfect guy to talk to Dan.  Because he's one of the last "I'll got talk to Dan" guys left in the organization.

There's your difference!

Some people on this forum thought that was a genuinely good idea

Yeah, Cooley was headed in to see Dan about something or nothing & Dan's secretary told him he had to go to Shanny/Bruce.

Cooley was NOT joking about this. He was serious.

He went to Snyder about getting back on the team. Twice.

Not once. TWICE.

To try and get Snyder to force Scott and Jay to put him on the team. Whether they had a space for him or not. Whether he was in their plans or not.

To his credit, Snyder didn't and told him to talk to people in charge of that.

If Snyder had done what Cooley wanted, it means that the Redskins would've had to cut some young up-and-comer. To hold a place for a player that was not only past his prime, but past his playing time.

Cooley even confronted Team President Bruce Allen about it on his radio show, as you can see here:

http://es.redskins.com/topic/398950-wp-chris-cooley-asks-bruce-allen-why-the-redskins-didn’t-sign-him-last-season/

This was all very selfish of Cooley, IMO. I don't have a problem with Cooley wanting to play again (though I feel his playing days are done). I just have a problem with how he went about trying to get back on the team.

It was wrong, and I have lost respect for him because of it.

How do we know he was 100% serious though? It's possible he went to Snyder just jokingly saying "come on Danny boy, you guys have no tight ends left, I bet I still have SOMETHING left, why not give me a shot??" Knowing that realistically Dan/Bruce/Jay/mccloughan will say no. Doesn't hurt to try asking, even if he did ask a couple times. If they say no, oh well, at least he tried. And at some point he did finally give up what little serious hope I feel he had.

I don't think this is a fair reason to hate Cooley at all. People will I guess, but I don't agree with it. That's all.

Because why would he go to Snyder with the same joke twice?

Answer? He wasn't joking. He tried to get back on the team in a dishonest way. Through a back door he thought he had with the owner.

Fortunately, that door didn't exist.

Nobody knows what was going on through his mind though...so it's crazy to say he wasn't joking. He's always been known as not being a serious guy. Maybe he thought he'd try asking dan one last time to be let on the team again, fully knowing it realistically won't happen. I doubt he thought it would work at all, therefore I don't see it as him being selfish.

Whatever...people are going to think what they want. My opinion, I don't think any less of him at all, because I doubt he actually thought any of that would work.
