The kid has a bunch of flaws but he's playing now and has a chance to improve let's look for the positives rather than focus on the inevitable mistakes and shortcomings.

Eh.

There's not a whole lot to talk about besides Haskins.

...

The Haskins conversation is very relevant. And while it could be merged into the Haskins general thread, most of this commentary is in reply/reference to his game against the Lions and what came out of it.

I mean, it feels like both threads are talking about the same thing.  His game against the Lions and what happened when it ended and what happened in the press conference.

I like how you said "there's not a whole lot to talk about besides Haskins", and then list a ton of topics.  So here goes...

We could talk about Williams, if that's up your alley.

****ing up 3 opportunities to trade a 1st rounder for him is comical, but Williams not playing wouldn't go in a Next Day evaluation of a game thread.   He was relevant before the trade deadline, but after, he's irrelevant until discussing draft picks.

We made mention of McLaurin/Harmon. Not much to say beyond that they are looking like great picks at the moment and they personify what you want in a draft pick.

McLaurin obviously.  Harmon though, to be honest, I'm still not sure he's got the goods to be a starting outside WR.

While I'm waffling about Harmon, I feel more confident that Trey Quinn doesn't have the goods to make it long term, and is a spot we should be looking into upgrading.  Paul Richardson is looking like Just-A-Guy with speed.  Keenum missed a few long touchdown opportunities from Richardson getting behind coverage.  I'm not sure if Colt or Haskins have as well but I wouldn't be surprised.  Richardson seems to struggle to develop a rapport with QB's, even looking back at his time in Seattle, it seems a lot of his production came from broken plays, and Wilson scrambling around looking for anything he can get.

Speed is useful, and his contract isn't the best to get rid of in the off-season, so i kind of want us to have Richardson spend some time in the Slot.  See if that acceleration can't be used there.

We could talk about how the OL is going to be decimated by free agency/Bruce Allen's ego... (Penn, Scherff, Flowers, all FA.... Williams likely gone or hold out again).

I've made a case in the draft thread, that OL is not in the perilous shape the national media think.  Christian looked good in pass protection against the Jets (haven't seen the all-22 from the Lions game), but this is the 2nd game in a row he's played at least 1/4 of the game.  Team is giving him opportunities to show what he can do, and as far as I can tell, he's done well.

Penn isn't the future, he doesn't move well anymore.  Christian looks like a competent replacement.  I don't think we can afford both Flowers and Scherff, but one of them plus Wes Martin could be ok.

I don't think OL is an issue we should be stressing over.

We can talk about how our running backs for next year under contract are Guice (has made it two games without injury, but limited action), Love (IR) and Peterson.

I am completely fine rolling with that trio next season.  If anyone objects to that, I'd like to know why.  That said, I still think we should have gone elsewhere with the Love pick

We can talk about how our top tight end that is around is Jeremy Sprinkle.

I think it's a little baffling that the franchise has chosen to roll with the most expensive TE group that is incapable of producing in the run game, and is often injured to the detriment of the passing game.  I'm still surprised we didn't address TE in the 2019 draft at all.  Run game is a major need area, but we have talented RB's.  So that's not the issue, yet we draft a player to stash on IR (Bryce Love) in the 4th round instead of TE's that show more upside than Sprinkle like Foster Moreau whose helped Josh Jacobs be the R.O.Y. with almost 1,000 rushing yards already.  Moreau has played in 46% of the Raiders offensive snaps.

I doubt this draft has the TE group the last draft did, but maaaaaybe now the Front Office thinks it should be addressed in the draft.

We can talk about Tress Way being a free agent after this upcoming season.

We can talk about Josh Norman getting benched and the D seeing a marked improvement.

Fabian Moreau certainly looked out of place covering the Slot, so glad to see outside corner is a more natural fit.  Norman's lost a step, we all have known that for a year, then he lost another step this off-season.  We saw a lot of training camp highlights of Richardson looking healthy, McLaurin being a surprise, and debating about Sims making the team.  A common theme in those highlights had Norman struggling versus their speed.  What I'm confused about is reports saying Jay wanted to cut him in the off-season...yet Jay had no desire to bench him when he was head coach.  Callahan comes in, and that changes.  Seems like there's a lot of conflicting reports.

We can talk about the need for a FS or if Apke can adequately play the position.

I'm looking for any info I can get on Troy Apke and if people think he can adequately fill that spot.  It's a difficult position, and there really aren't that many competent FS's in the league.  I was traveling and couldn't watch his first start, against the Vikings.

We can talk about how our inside backers show a lot of promise but aren't guys you want to rely on every down -- yet.

We've still got some coverage issues on the inside.  That's more apparent now that Norman got benched and teams can no longer pick on him.  I also don't like how some guys, can bounce runs outside on us.

We can talk about Callahan's running scheme isn't lighting the world on fire, but his friendship with Bruce Allen means he's a candidate to be the next HC anyways.

If KOC is the team's desire for next offensive mind, and he's too inexperienced to step into that role, I could be persuaded about Callahan for 1 more year...only if Manusky is fired.  I think our defensive guys on the LoS have talent, but I'd like to see some schemes/plays designed for a guy to be disruptive.  It seems there are too many plays with Edge and IDL rushing in a read what happens and then react manner, which takes too long in the NFL.  It's nice to have someone whose role on a play is to just disrupt the play.  Shoot a gap, muck up their blocking scheme early as they have to account for that.

We can talk about how Bruce Allen isn't likely to get fired, and if he is, it's still Snyder hiring the new guy.

We can talk about tickets being $4.

NFL ownership is surprisingly socialist.  They share gate revenue.  If 31 other owners are pissed Snyder is hurting their pocket books...could they force him to sell?  I don't know, but I hope so.

We can talk about being in third place in the division. Hooray.

We can talk about our continued reliance on injury prone players being a key driver in our franchise's issues.

I'll counter this one.  This season has been uncharacteristically healthy for us.  The only 3 players on IR that are having any sort of negative on-field impact, and that's Reuben Foster, Jordan Reed, and Vernon Davis.  That said, we weren't sure if Foster was going to get suspended (he didn't), he also has an extensive injury history.  We knew Jordan Reed was going to get injured at some point and likely not be healthy enough to play when Haskins finally started.  Vernon Davis is 35, and he turns 36 in 2 months, we had to suspect age would catch up with him.  None of these three are surprises...what is a surprise, is that it's only 3 players.  Everyone else were either roster bubble players or training camp bodies.

P.S.  I hope this doesn't send you like 20 notifications.  If it does, I'm sorry.
