The Washington Monument reopens. Here's what you need to know

The Washington Monument, one of D.C.'s most iconic landmarks, reopens to visitors on September 19 after several years of construction and repairs.

A tall, white obelisk named for the United States' first President, the monument is one of the most dramatic features of the Washington skyline and one of the most popular attractions on the National Mall.

However, like so many historic sites, the 555-foot-tall monument has needed TLC over the years. In 2011, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake centered in Virginia damaged the obelisk, causing some 150 cracks in the structure.

After $15 million in repair work, the Washington Monument reopened, only to close again in 2016 after an elevator cable snapped. Fortunately, no one was inside the elevator at the time, but it meant that the monument needed an additional round of work.

According to the National Park Service (NPS), which maintains the site, the new renovations were about more than simply fixing up the elevator.

For example, a temporary screening building constructed in 2001 has been replaced with a permanent structure.

"The elevator control system was modernized and the ride is much smoother than it used to be," Hall says.

"They used to have a ranger in the elevator [with visitors], and it's now a fully automated system so no ranger is riding," Mike Litterst, chief of public affairs for the NPS, told CNN.

Meet the Folks Planning to Ruin Your Commute on September 23

Quote

On Wednesday night, dozens of protesters choked off traffic on Florida Avenue between R and S streets. Chanting, “The earth is on fire! Put the fire out!” they ignored the blaring of car horns, the frustrated glares from neighborhood residents, and verbal threats from drivers along the lines of “****ing move or I’ll smack the **** out of you.”

After five minutes, the group returned to the Friends Meeting House to reflect on the experience and continue planning for a larger version of the protest.

The road-blocking exercise was a sliver of what the group, which operated under the name Shut Down DC, hopes to accomplish in DC on September 23. The activists, according to their press release, have vowed to “bring traffic and business as usual to a standstill” by “seizing key intersections” in the name of climate change awareness.

...

Shut Down says its blockades are being strategically placed to impact the most powerful in DC: the intersections chosen will all be near places of money or power; the group is staying out of the way of public transportation.

All the same, anyone who actually lives in DC knows that there’s no way to block traffic for just the coal-industry lobbyists and the Trump administration EPA appointees. Which brings up the question: How is infuriating people en route to visit spouses in the hospital—or merely trying to get to the office on time—going to help the cause?

In related news, I just started a Facebook group called "Bring a pile of rocks with you on September 23rd."

There was a mass shooting last night in DC, Columbia Heights. Two men with AK-style rifles shot up an apartment courtyard and got away (still not caught yet). Probably not hearing about it because only one person died, even though 6 were shot.

There was another shooting 30 minutes later on Rhode Island NE, where one person died and two were injured.

Police haven’t said if the two incidents are related.

The ShutdownDC people are the worst. Currently protesting literally right outside where I live. Achieving absolutely nothing but angering people in a city where close to 95% already agree with a pro-environment agenda.

Yeah, this is dumb. Block people going to/from the White House or the Capitol. Leave everyone else alone!

Dumbest.  Protest.  Ever.

Let's protest climate change by causing thousands of cars to needlessly idle, and alienate 90% liberal DMV people just trying to get to work on a Monday morning.

I agree with their agenda 100%, yet I also want a pack of hungry wolves to be unleashed upon them.

According to Shut Down DC spokesperson Kaela Bamberger, the group decided in a meeting today to take action again at 7 a.m. this Friday morning. Representatives from each of Shut Down DC’s affinity groups were overjoyed with the success and attention today’s action garnered, and wanted to do something to honor the final day of the global climate strikes.

Get to the office at 6am.

Feds admit radios interfere with garage door openers

A top-secret and secure federal government facility just northwest of Warrenton admitted Tuesday that it may be responsible for crippling dozens of garage door openers in two nearby subdivisions.

More than 70 Olde Gold Cup and Silver Cup Estates homeowners have reported that openers started to fail about two weeks ago, according to Betty Compton, Olde Gold Cup’s Neighborhood Watch group coordinator.

The disturbance has affected more than 60 of Olde Gold Cup’s 214 homeowners. About nine of Silver Cup Estates’ 55 homeowners complained of malfunctioning door openers.

Some pointed fingers at Warrenton Training Center Station B along Bear Wallow Road, suggesting its activities somehow have interfered with the use of their garage doors.

Rarely commenting on its activities, the training center addressed their concerns in a three-paragraph statement.

“To address homeland defense needs and comply with government direction that agencies use the electromagnetic spectrum more efficiently, the Department of Defense (DoD) is deploying new land mobile radios to installation across the country,” the statement reads.

The radios “operate in the same frequency range . . . as many unlicensed, low-powered garage door openers, which have operated in this range for years,” the training center said.

Authorized to use that frequency range for “several decades,” the defense department’s deployment of land mobile radios “is relatively new,” according to the training center.

As a result, “some users of garage door openers have experienced varying levels of inoperability that has been attributed to interference caused by the new radios.”

Garage door openers “operate as unlicensed devises, they must accept any interference from authorized spectrum users.”

The training center recently conducted a two-week test of its new radio system that apparently has coincided with the garage openers problems experienced by Olde Gold Cup and Silver Cup Estates homeowners.

To appease affected homeowners, the training center as of Tuesday, Nov. 5, will suspend use of its radio system for 30 days.

That will give homeowners a chance to “update their equipment to operate within the RF (radio frequency) spectrum guidelines,” the training center said. “After the 30-day window, DoD will re-able the new radio system permanently.”

Washington Post restaurant critic exposed husband’s affair, woman says

A Washington Post food critic unwittingly became embroiled in a married man’s affair when the cheater was photographed dining with his mistress in a recent restaurant review, his alleged wife is claiming.

The revelation was made on Wednesday during a weekly online Q&A with the Post’s Tom Sietsema when an unnamed woman claimed her husband was photographed with a mystery woman in the critic’s most recent restaurant review.

“Well Tom your latest review is accompanied by a picture of my husband dining with a woman who isn’t me!” the woman wrote.

“Once confronted with photographic evidence, he confessed to having an ongoing affair.”

“Just thought you’d be amused to hear of your part in the drama.” she added. “This Thanksgiving I’m grateful to you for exposing a cheat!”

District reveals latest plan to improve notorious ‘Dave Thomas Circle’

There is a revised plan to improve safety at one of D.C.’s most notorious intersections, nicknamed “Dave Thomas Circle.”

It’s the spot in Northeast D.C. where Florida Avenue, New York Avenue and First Street all converge in a triangular tangle of traffic, bicyclists and pedestrians.

A Wendy’s restaurant sits like an island in the middle of the chaos.

The District Department of Transportation made changes to the intersection in 2010, but problems have multiplied there as the area and traffic have grown.

DDOT has been working since 2013 to come up with solutions and in April of this year unveiled a proposed redesign and invited public feedback. The plan was tweaked based on that feedback, and an open house was held Tuesday night to show it off to the community.

From the start, the plan has called for the Wendy’s to relocate in order to make way for one of three new public green spaces around the intersection.

Virginia farm's 'Resist White Supremacy' sign goes viral

WASHINGTON - A sign outside a Centreville, Va. farm has gone viral, after the family-owned business posted a photo of the message board, which reads "Resist White Supremacy."

20a1cf62-cox-farms-resist_1518392373691_

Cox Farms on Braddock Road normally uses their sign to featured produce advertisements, as well as witty words and aphorisms to visitors and passersby.

In the continuing conversation on KKK and white supremacy, the farm owners say that the message is not political, but one as "concerned citizens of this country."

The farm posted a photo along with the following message on its Facebook page to clarify their position:

"Last week, some of our customers and neighbors asked us to clarify the sentiment behind our sign that said 'Rise & Resist.' So, we changed it to read 'Rise Up Against Injustice' and 'Resist White Supremacy.' We sincerely believe that fighting injustice and white supremacy is a responsibility that can- and should- unite us all. We struggle to see how anyone other than self-identified white supremacists would take this as a personal attack.

We’re not seeking to alienate folks who have different perspectives on tax reform or infrastructure spending. But when it comes to speaking out against systems of oppression and injustice, we see it as our moral responsibility to use our position of privilege and power, along with the tools of our trade and the platforms available to us, to engage visibly and actively in the fight for justice. Our roadside sign messages are one small way we do this."
