Per CBS News: SC Justice Scalia found dead

When did George Mason become the university of choice for every type of conservative silliness?  They have the only faculty in the nation that still pretends that Austrian economics is a real thing.   They have biased think tanks attached to them like the Mercatus Center and the Institute for Humane Studies, both of which are basically political arms of conservative K Street lobbies.  They have no connection to Scalia, but they are slapping his name on their law school at the behest of Charles Koch.

I would understand it if George Mason was a private school, but it isn't.

It's odd because Mason has been one of the first schools to adopt Neuroeconomics and behavioral economics as well. So it's not like they are stuck in ancient time.

This is simply a case of money talks. Most of the kids attending Mason are NoVA kids who either don't care for politics or if they do are quite liberal. It's not like the school is a conservative haven attracting right leaning students.

Ah, the good ole days of undergrad, when I did those ICES experiments and implemented coordinated socialism.  Good times.

That or just acted erratic for the sake of acting erratic.

Two thoughts.. First Mason isn't out on the island all by itself as you assert.. Think Liberty University is right there with us... Second, no matter how screwed up the university's administration gets.. They can never take away the fact that Bill Murray matriculated from Mason.

They don't have to. He didn't go to George Mason University. He went to Regis University, but dropped out before he finished. He did get an honorary doctorate from Regis in 2007 though.

I mean, really... George Mason University wasn't even an independent University until 1972, when he was already 22.

Where do you get some of this stuff anyway?

I suppose it's possible that by "matriculated" you meant "enjoyed a performance of the student band at a basketball game he attended because his son was an assistant for Towson who was playing at GMU"?

Hubby still doesn't believe this.  (Or that no one considers acronyms when something this important is at stake.)

He still thinks it's an April Fools joke.  I told him that links were provided, and read skinsfan_1215's post to him.  He still doesn't believe it, that ASS Law is "a thing" now.

By the time I get home from work this afternoon, he should be back to reality. (and will have confirmed that we're all screwed).  I'm gonna hear the outrage, pray for me.

What

Liberty and GMU are nothing alike. Nothing.

The GMU school of law may have some conservative leanings (or just be willing to accept money from conservative groups) but the people that attend GMU are nothing like the majority of people who attend Liberty. Its not even close. What the hell are you talking about?

Have to disagree with you there...

Both Liberty and Mason are examples of crazy whackadoodle conservative schools. Mason is public, larger and more diverse but make no mistake the administration running that school has been advocating/teaching fringe ideas in economics, law, history,  Humane Studies, and  philosophy for decades. Mason is collecting more than a hundred million bucks from the Kooks, ( Koch brothers ).. The Koch's are spending what 900 million dollars this election cycle alone to promote conservativism as they define it. Mason is a huge part of that.  Mason is collecting half of the $90 million ear marked for universities.

http://www.desmogblog.com/koch-and-george-mason-university

(*) From 2005-2014, George Mason University (GMU) and affiliated centers have taken just under $80 million from Koch foundations.

(*)The George Mason University Foundation received $46,527,725 from Koch foundations since 2005. The bulk of this funding has gone to GMU's Economics department and GMU's Law and Economics Center. This $46.5 million investment represents half of the $90 million total that Koch foundations have sent to college departments at over 360 universities since 2005.

(*)Charles Koch continues to finance and govern two political influence groups hosted on GMU's Arlington, Virginia campus.

(*)Since 2005, Charles Koch's foundation has given the Institute for Humane Studies $23,386,630, and provided $9,847,500 more to the Mercatus Center.

(*)Charles Koch is the chairman of the IHS, and has been directing the organization since the 1960s, before it re-located to GMU.

(*)Koch is also a director of the Mercatus Center, which he co-founded with Richard Fink.

And then you have on top of all this the ASS Law money

Lastly, "Concerns over Koch and academic freedom for professors to teach material free of restrictions and stipulations in Koch-funded university departments have been raised by professors, students and academic freedom experts."  Rightfully so,  the stated purpose for the Koch's funding is tied to spreading the conservative gospel as the Koch's see it..  Creating an academic basis for ideas they promote which involve economic, legal, humanitarian and historical.   Ideas which either have no basis in academia or ideas long since discredited by academia.     How is that any different from what Liberty University is doing?

Sounds like to me the ties between Mason and Judge Scalia are real. Whether Mason uses the unfortunate acronym ASS Law is totally different matter... However this is Virginia we are talking about which has a number of unfortunate acronyms... Like the no child left behind testing... ( Standards of Learning Test )... referred to as the "SOL test", given to public school kids.
