Let's hope it turns out to be nothing. But this must be a serious event.

All schools in the vast Los Angeles Unified School District have been ordered closed due to a threat, a spokeswoman Ellen Morgan said Tuesday.

The district, the second largest in the nation, has 640,000 students in kindergarten through 12th grade and more than 900 schools and 187 public charter schools.

The district spans 720 square miles including Los Angeles and all or part of more than 30 smaller cities and some unincorporated areas.

It's kinda comforting that a school system this big has an effective contingency plan for shutting down the entire school system. I assume they never have to do anything like this due to the weather.

I dunno.  I sure wish they didn't have to plan for this kind of thing.  I'll never forget the heartache I felt when my daughter (then in kindergarten) came home and told me they were doing "bad guy practice" in school.  They were doing an active shooter drill and all the kids were hiding in closets.  It had never occurred to me before then that this was something the schools were actively prepping for.
