@washingnats - Nationals showing interest in Phillips, Murphy https://t.co/PD4goub89nvia @mlb

First Ive read Murphys name outside of fan rumors..

Murphy would be fine, particularly with Espinosa platooning against LHP. Murphy has also played third and LF, so he could be a long term back up for injury cases at those positions.

His away split against RHP the last two years is an .820+ OPS

Has the Nats at 32 million in arbitration, which gets them to about 120 million opening day if they don't make any other moves.

Probably pretty close to the limit in spending.

payroll was around 160mil last couple of seasons, seems like they have room to go, even if they want to cut back a little

And there are quotes from ownership about how payroll was "beyond tapped out." Factor that with having to eat Papelbon's salary to move him and the recent MASN ruling and I can see the Learners being hesitant to add a lot more payroll for opening day.

Translation: In my always negative opinion and pure speculation...

Translation: I actually did analysis. One of the biggest reasons the Papelbon deal was done was because of his salary. The Phillies picked up some and he deferred some more.

Scherzer's deal had a lot of deferred money. Soriano had deferred money.

The owner of the team is on the record as saying that payroll is beyond tapped out when they're at ~160 million.

They offered 200 million to Heyward but couldn't give him the front loaded three years that Chicago did.

Finally, the MASN deal. Judge overruled MLB and sized with Angelos. Arbitration will have to be done by an outside arbiter. The resulting litigation is going to take a couple years.

All of that points to a lack of willingness to substantially add payroll before opening day. Maybe if the Nats are in contention at the deadline, Rizzo will be able to increase payroll in order to add an outfield bat or back of the pen piece. But not right now.

Offered more money to Heyward and Zobrist, and an higher AAV to O'Day before the O's came in and offered a 4th year (very well within the realm of possibility O'Day going to the Nats influenced Angelos) and Rizzo has stated that he can eat a contract if he needs to; but yes, we should believe Slateman's "analysis."

To summarize, because you say so.

The MASN deal will be redone to help Nats. Our GM is on record as having the ability to eat a contract. We offered more money to Heyward and Zobrist. But yeah, we strapped.

Zobrist didn't want to be here due to clubhouse culture. Oh and the Nats offered a whopping 4 million more.

Heyward's contract is front loaded, came with a 20 million signing bonus, and also has an opt out after three years.

So his salary break down is 15 million in 2016, 21.5 in 2017, and 21.5 in 2018, with a 20 million signing bonus. That means he will effectively make 26 million a year until he's a free agent in 2019.

In order to break even on what the Nationals offered, had have to only get a 5 year deal worth less than a 125 million. Considering Hanley Ramirez got a 22 million AAV at age 32 and Ellsbhry got 21+ at 30, in three years, Heyward will have no problem getting a 7 year deal at ~25 million. More if he can develop power while maintaining his elite defense.

The Nationals offered more money in the contract, but didn't front load it. In fact, they tried to repeat what they did with Scherzer and defer money until after the contract.

See above post. We did not offer more money to Hayward. And he's going to have to eat a contract in order to move Papelbon. And he's effectively eating another big contract with Werth and Zimmerman a lock for missing half the season.

No one cares what you have to say really. I'm done arguing with you. This is all just your opinion passed off as fact. Case in point -- Zobrist wanted to play for Maddon, plain and simple. Go back to WNFF where you have your negative nancies willing to slurp up your crap.

Me too. Something this line up is sorely lacking: contact.

Not just that, its mental/emotional. Philips has that swagger, that fire. Escobar had it too. We have a lot of nervous nelly looking guys on the team and that showed in the big games. You know Phillips won't be afraid of playing the Mets.

We have a couple of those guys like that: Scherzer, Harper, Rendon...

But I've been liking adding Phillips for a little while. Better than signing Murphy or Kendrick and losing a pick
