Manitowoc school closed after spiders bite student, teacher

Classes were canceled at one Manitowoc school Friday after a student and teacher were bitten by spiders.

Superintendent James Feil says classes at Wilson Middle School were dismissed early on Thursday after the student was bitten. Feil says the student brushed the spider off, but the bite area did become itchy and swollen.

The teacher who was bitten needed medical treatment.

"We immediately recognized that we had to address that," said Feil.

Exterminators were called in and have killed more than 30 yellow sac spiders, as of Friday morning.

Feil says most of the spiders were concentrated in an area near the library. They were also found in some classrooms.

He says, as of Friday, only two bites have been reported.

'Pretty full on': Father hears squeals of terror as daughter stumbles across highly venomous spider

An ecologist and nature photographer has urged parents to be "vigilant" after a highly venomous funnel-web spider found its way inside his hallway, where his two young children were playing.

Lachlan Copeland, who lives in bushland near Coffs Harbour on the NSW Mid North Coast, was in the kitchen on New Year's Day when he heard his four-year-old daughter Lucy squeal in terror.

The 49-year-old instantly knew something was wrong and rushed to check on her and his three-year-old son Blake.

"It was a pretty full-on spider," he said, adding it was a male who was likely looking for a female to mate with.

"It was pretty chilled out though.

"It wasn't aggressive and didn't get into a threatening posture.

Super-sized trapdoor spider discovered in Australia

Researchers in Australia have made a big discovery: a super-sized species of trapdoor spider found only in Central Queensland.

The arachnid has been dubbed Euoplos dignitas, a name "derived from the Latin dignitas meaning dignity or greatness, reflecting the impressive size and nature of the spider,” scientists with the Queensland Museum said in a statement.

The spider lives in open woodland habitats and builds its burrows in the black soils of the Brigalow Belt in Central Queensland, which is on the northeastern coast of Australia.

The species has lost much of its habitat to land clearing, which likely makes it an endangered species, the scientists said.

While the Australian team did not detail how big their find is, Trapdoor spiders typically have bodies up to 1.5 inches long that nest underground, according to National Geographic. They are hairy tropical spiders, and their bites can cause pain and swelling in humans.

Supermarket is closed over fears male shoppers could suffer permanent erections: Spider whose bite can cause bizarre reaction in men sparks evacuation

An Austrian supermarket was evacuated after the store manager reportedly spotted a banana-loving spider capable of causing permanent erections in men.

The Penny shop in Krems an der Donau, 45 miles west of Vienna, remains closed since Tuesday over fears of the four-inch black and red spider.

Emergency services were called and warn the spider, still at large, may have been a highly venomous Brazilian Wandering Spider, known to reach Europe by hiding in bunches of bananas.

The creature is one of the planet's most venomous spiders, and bites can be fatal after causing hypothermia, blurred vision, convulsions and, in some cases, erections. The spider's venom is even being studied for use in erectile dysfunction treatments after it was found that a bite from one of the spiders can give male victims a painful four-hour erection.

An exterminator has been called and the banana crates in the store have been sealed, but reports say the shop will likely remain closed until next week.

If you're going to curse someone in the spider thread, the curse should be spider related, imo.

Very well. May the same wildebeest stomp the living **** out of any those eight legged abominations that crawled out of the depths of hell while defecating on their lawns.

Better? 🤣

100 venomous spiders found at school in southwest Japan, sports day postponed

About 100 venomous redback widow spiders were found at an elementary school here, leading to the postponement of its sports day scheduled for Oct. 21. No health damage to the children has reportedly been confirmed.

According to the Oita Municipal Government, at around 2:20 p.m. on Oct. 20, a teacher at the municipal Misa Elementary School found a redback widow spider, which is designated as an invasive species, on the school grounds. Upon receiving a call, city officials checked the school grounds and found a total of approximately 100 spiders and several egg sacs in a drainage ditch, which were then exterminated with insecticide. On Oct. 21, another five spiders and three egg sacs were found in the same area.

In the city of Oita, there have been five confirmed cases of redback widow spiders this year, but all were of only a few spiders, and this is the first time that roughly 100 of them have been confirmed.

I corrected the title to "venomous" when it incorrectly stated "poisonous."
