VICTORY!!!

Redskins 30 - Chargers 24

The sun is shining, we all got an extra hour of sleep last night and we are just a few weeks away from the best holiday ever invented - Thanksgiving. It's a good day. Almost good enough to help you forget that your beloved football team is 2-5 and coming off of a tragic beatdown by the Denver Broncos.

All of the optimism from last year has been replaced by questions. Is RGIII the same player he was before his injury? Can the defense's knack for getting turnovers make up for the fact that they can't seem to stop anyone when it counts? Do the Redskins even practice special teams?

Last year, the team went 3-6 before miraculously turning things around, winning the NFC East and making it into the playoffs. I wish I could believe that they were poised for another epic run, but that doesn't seem like its in the cards.

But there's always hope. And, as I said before, its a beautiful day, we are all well rested and the Redskins will be facing off against the Chargers in this year's homecoming game. There will be a ton of veteran players at FedEx Field today. Hopefully they can give the 'Skins the pep talk they need to get fired up for the game and to start turning things around.

I'll be covering the game today with Murf, so check back here for all of the action.

Redskins Inactives

QB Rex Grossman

RB Chris Thompson

S Jose Gumbs

LB Darryl Tapp

G Josh LeRibeus

TE Fred Davis

NT Chris Neild

Chargers Inactives

QB Brad Sorensen

CB Crezdon Butler

SS Brandon Taylor

LB Donald Butler

T Mike Remmers

G Chad Rinehart

DT Kwame Geathers

1:01 PM - The Redskins win the coin toss. At this point, I'll take whatever wins I can get.

1:08 PM - A bit of a rocky start for the defense, but they tightened up and forced San Diego to punt before they got across midfield.

1:14 PM - RGIII just flicked the ball out to Jordan Reed for a first down. I know its a "homecoming" game, but I didn't expect to see the Redskins successfully running the option.

1:21 PM - The Redskins put together an impressive 92-yard opening drive, but they stall out on the seven-yard line. Adding insult to injury, the chip shot field goal is blocked, so they walk away with nothing. Special teams strike again.

END OF FIRST QUARTER

0-0

1:27 PM - The Chargers have gone 12 quarters without giving up a touchdown, which is a franchise record. Aren't we all glad we were here to witness it?

1:33 PM - Perry Riley's head stops the Chargers drive as Phillip Rivers pass bounces right off of it on third down. San Diego punts instead of attempting a 53-yard field goal, keeping our scored tied at 0-0.

1:34 PM - The Redskins start another drive from the one-yard line. Fun.

1:36 PM - Defensive end Lawrence Guy tips the ball to defensive end Sean Lissenmore, who catches it for a touchdown. Ugh. 0-7

1:53 PM - EJ Biggers intercepts a pass that Phillip Rivers gifted to him. Biggers 16-yard return was negated by a 15-yard personal foul on DeAngelo Hall.

1:55 PM - Alfred Morris finally sees some daylight. He runs 26-yards, putting the 'Skins on the five. Then he follows it up with a five-yard touchdown run to tie the game. Four plays, 67 yards, one minute and 55 seconds on the drive. 7-7

2:13 PM - The defense has looked good all day, but not so much on that last drive. 11 plays, 85 yards, four minutes and 43 seconds culminating in a 15-yard touchdown pass from Phillip Rivers to Eddie Royal. 7-14

2:17 PM - The Chargers continue to tip RGIII's passes. Two in a row on this drive.

2:20 PM - Kai Forbath attempts a 59-yard field goal to end the quarter, the kicking equivalent of a Hail Mary. It too is blocked.

HALFTIME

7-14

2:37 PM - Heck of an effort by Pierre Garcon to haul in a 38-yard pass from Griffin. He was being mugged by Derek Cox, who never even bothered looking for the ball, and he still hauled it in.

2:39 PM - The option works again. This time it's Santana Moss with an 18-yard run.

2:42 PM - Nice little misdirection on that hand off to Darrel Young to get into the end zone. 9 plays, 74 yards, five minutes and 17 seconds. We have a tie ball game. 14-14

END OF THIRD QUARTER

14-14

3:09 PM - Wow, it worked again! Darrel Young back in the end zone to cap off another impressive drive and to give the Redskins the lead. 11 plays, 79 yards, seven minutes and 45 seconds off the clock. 21-14

3:11 PM - And Darrel Young makes the tackle on the kickoff! That guy is everywhere today.

3:16 PM - A wide open Keenan Allen generously decides to drop a pass that would have moved the chains on third down. He must know how bad the Redskins need a win.

3:24 PM - David Amerson with a huuuuge takeaway to kill the Chargers drive!!!

3:30 PM - The tide has finally turned. Now Kai Forbath can actually kick a field goal without having it blocked. He connects on a 47-yarder to extend the lead. Seven plays, 22 yards, three minutes and 26 seconds. 24-14

3:32 PM - Today's announced attendance is 80,115 and they all cheered in relief when Forbath made that kick.

3:44 PM - And just like that, the Chargers are back in it. 8 plays, 77 yards, two minutes and 49 seconds, capped off by a 16-yard reception by Keenan Allen. 24-21

3:50 PM - Garcon with another impressive catch, this one as he was falling down, to set up a third-and-three.

3:52 PM - 2:10 on the clock, the Redskins are up by three and the Chargers are on their own eight. This'll be interesting.

3:58 PM - Keenan Allen slips through coverage on fourth-and-two to make a huge play and to put the Chargers precariously close to field goal range.

4:01 PM - Seriously, lock down Keenan Allen! It's going to him every time!

4:06 PM - "After reviewing the play, the ball carrier did not score a touchdown."

4:10 PM - Miraculously, the Chargers end up with a field goal instead of a touchdown even though they had first-and-goal from the one. 14 plays, 91 yards, two minutes and seven seconds. We're going to overtime. 24-24

END OF FOURTH QUARTER

24-24

4:27 PM - THE REDSKINS WIN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MY TAKE

One strange thing about covering Redskins games over the past three seasons is that it has given me a peak behind the curtain at the local sports coverage. In the locker room after games, you can hear from which questions are asked and how they are asked how the local papers and TV news outlets are planning on shaping the narrative following a game.

This week, the question that kept getting asked by reporters over and over again following the 'Skins impressive, nail-biting overtime win over the Chargers was: "Is this a turning point in the season?"

Last year, Washington was spinning wheels at 3-6 and it looked to us all like we were headed for a lost season. Then suddenly, everything clicked into place and they put together a string of wins that lead them to first place in the NFC East and secured them a playoff spot. So obviously, when the team was 2-5 coming into this game and they pulled off a big overtime win, it was natural for the local pundits to begin wondering if we were in for a repeat performance.

So is this a turning point?

The simple answer is: no one knows.

There's a lot to feel good about in this win.

The defense's bend, but don't break philosophy worked as intended this week. The Chargers put up 410 yards of total offense (341 passing and 69 rushing yards), but the defense got two interceptions, both of which lead to offensive points. And, if the team really does turn things around this season, the defenses' goal line stand in the final minute of regulation will definitely be prominently featured in the highlight reel.

The offense looked like the offense of last season. They put up 500 yards of total offense. Alfred Morris had 25 carries for 121 yards and a touchdown. Pierre Garcon had seven receptions for 172 yards, including an incredibly acrobatic and impressive one-handed catch. And Darrel Young racked up three goal line touchdowns to help secure the win.

But while two-thirds of the team got the job done today, the special teams continued to struggle. This week they had two blocked field goals, including one that was a glorified extra point. Also, the Chargers managed to pin the Redskins on the one yard line twice on punts, the second of which resulted in a costly turnover.

So is this a turning point in the season? Who knows. All I know for sure is that the team, and us fans, really needed this win. And for this week, that feels like enough.

Will Riggo be making an apperance?

The official press release mentions Ron Saul, Rick "Doc" Walker, Mark Rypien, Mark Moseley, Bobby Mitchell, Dexter Manley, Darryl Grant, Chris Hanburger, Mike Bragg, Larry Brown, Pat Fischer, Sonny Jurgensen, Charley Taylor and George Stark, "among others."

So no mention of Riggins.

NFL gameday had a decent RG3 review with Warner et al. Kurt thinks "it's more mental" (on RG3) at this point, and Mooch/Sapp join in the overall belief he will fully return to previous abilities in time (and, I would hope, surpass them in growth), but who knows when.

I just posted the inactives above.

Also, starting to see the throwback jerseys out on the field. They look pretty sharp.

I see Fred Davis is still inactive....ughhh!!!!!

also, i heard somewhere that San Diego is spanish for......ahahaha nahh i'll keep it PG here in the gameday thread...for now :)

Fred Davis still inactive? I guess $500,000 and being in Shanny's doghouse is more important than winning football games.

Or he just sucks. He joins a long list of players that ES has embraced with highly odd affection. Reed is MUCH better/more talented and Paulsen is much more valuable as a blocker in the RO option stuff. Unless you honestly think Davis can be a WR that scares teams then he has no place right now. There is a reason that NO ONE wanted him this off season and NO ONE would even offer a conditional late round pick for him at the deadline.

Aside from there being interest in Fred this past off-season (Cleveland and Buffalo made big overtures before Fred decided to stay here), Paulsen has been totally nonexistent the last two weeks since he's been banged up.

Cutting our nose off to spite our face. It's the dogmatic, Shanahan way.

Hail.

Ha!  That was an awesome first line.

Just wanted to wish you gents and occasional ladies a win, fridge full of beer, and discount on Xanax.  I won't be in the gameday thread to save you all from my kneejerk tirades, but let's go Redskins!

"Fun" fact: the Redskins have never won their "homecoming" game. They lost to San Francisco 19-11 in 2011. And they lost to Carolina 21-13 in 2012. So if you are the betting type, pencil them in for a 23-15 loss today.

and they lost to the colts in coach mikes first season. 27-24. almost had a comeback win.

Bruce Allan has done a lot of good for the community/ ex-players et all.

Calling a PROFESSIONAL game a 'Homecoming Game' is NOT one of them.

Way to give the opponents an extra incentive Bruce.

Hail.
