Someone help me out here, what's the benefit to using the Pistol instead of the Shotgun?

here you go...

"In the pistol offense, also commonly referred to as the "pistol formation", the quarterback lines up four yards behind the center rather than seven yards, as with the shotgun formation. The running back lines up three yards directly behind the quarterback, as opposed to next to him as in the shotgun.

In the pistol formation, the quarterback is close enough to the line of scrimmage to be able to read the defense and far enough back to give him extra time and a better vision of the field just like in the shotgun."

Ball gets to the QB faster, RB is closer to the LOS, Lots of QB reads can be run from it.

And it's easier to do stuff like run bootlegs, waggles, keeps and the like, more variety than doing that just straight up running the shotgun.

The pistol is kind of a hybrid of the under centre and shotgun. The ball gets to the QB faster and the handoff to the running back happens closer to the LOS than in the shotgun so it's a formation which allows you to run more of your normal running game than in the gun. It's also a formation from which you can run the zone read with a very mobile dual threat QB ......

Couldn't run the pistol with the Sex Cannon, nice to see an expanded playbook for 2012
