Stophovr6
So we're celebrating the fact that we have zero depth at tackle? Not exactly. Hopefully someone else on the roster like Capers can come along. None of the other tackles on the roster have the experience Heyer has but that doesn't mean one of them can't be better. I'm more excited by the prospect of new players than the mediocrity of known talent.
darrelgreenie
wait...stephon heyer was our best rated OT last year by pro football prospects? why was he so horrible?Exactly.Extremeskins logic at work. darrelgreenie
10. The Redskins don’t have a swing tackle on their roster, certainly no one better than what Stephon Heyer was in recent years. Now that’s a sentence I thought I’d never type. But it’s true. Selvish Capers is not ready, nor is anyone else. Capers allowed Darrion Scott to get inside him and earlier was moved back by Joseph. Yes, it’s early but it’s still worth mentioning. Capers and Erik Cook were really hurt by the lockout. Oh, and it appears Heyer will be signing with Oakland.Read more at the Washington Examiner: http://washingtonexaminer.com/blogs/nfl/2011/08/practice-report-redskins-analysis-aug-2#ixzz1Tv5hWXbD

darrelgreenie
Forgot where I saw it but I recall reading Heyer was the 8th worst lineman in the league last year -- factoring % of QB hits when he played I compiled a list of the best redskins players from last season based on ProFootballFocus.com's player stats. I listed every player who played at least 1 snap in the regular season last year. League leaders and losers had to play a minimum of 25% of their teams snaps to qualify. Grading explained: http://www.profootballfocus.com/about/grading/ 2010 Redskins OT: 1. Stephon Heyer (-13 .3) 2. Jammal Brown (-18.8) 3. Trent Williams (-22.4) Skins 2010 offensive line pass protection stats Tackles 1. Stephon Heyer (5 sacks, 4 hits, 14 pressures, 7 penalties) 2. Stophovr6
There's also these great stats. http://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2011/06/15/three-year-pass-blocking-efficiency-offensive-linemen/ Sadly Jammal Brown is in the bottom 15 for tackles as well. Sigh. There are two other things to consider at this time. The season hasn't started and the rosters not set. Maybe Heyer wanted to move on. Califan007 The Constipated
Heyer will become good depth wherever he ends up ... At any rate, as a few others have mentioned, Heyer gave his all, played through injuries and has carved out an acceptible career for a guy who nobody drafted. Plus he seemed like a good guy. No hard feelings, hope you do well, Mr. Heyer.

mi6
I know there are folks that despise Heyer. But, I think he is a decent backup, and I sure do hope we have someone in the wings who is MUCH better.

DieselPwr44
Surprised.Heyer's versatility alone makes him a very worthy backup player in this league. Though he clearly wasn't able to hold down a starting role for a season, he had the ability to keep you afloat at multiple spots. Without him, we have to do something else on the line. Yeah, like go to Walmart and get a folding chair, which would be a clear upgrade to Tackle for Heyer.
s0crates
I would consider Heyer a good depth player at this point. He has a fair amount of experience at a bunch of spots on the line. We all remember how poorly he did replacing Jansen a few years back, but he has had a few decent games since then. I won't say I will miss him, but I will say I wish him the best. Depth on the offensive line remains a concern.
