Pr. George's County Exec Jack Johnson Arrested

Prince George's County Executive Jack Johnson and his wife, Leslie, have been arrested, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Maryland.

Federal law enforcement officers are executing search warrants in the county, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

NBC4 has witnessed police activity at Johnson's home in Mitchellville and at the county executive's office in Upper Marlboro.

A vehicle with a U.S. Treasury placard on the dashboard was spotted at the county executive's office, NBC4 reported.

Prince George's County Exec Jack Johnson's home Unmarked police vehicles also have been seen at Johnson's home with agents going in and out of the house.

Jack Johnson was escorted out of his home in handcuffs, NBC4's Tracee Wilkins reported. A woman with a coat over her head was also escorted out of the home.

A plumber who showed up at the scene said he was called to the home by FBI agents to make sure that no evidence was flushed down a toilet, Wilkins reported.

Leslie Johnson was recently elected to Prince George's County Council from District 6.

Jack Johnson, 61, has been the county executive since 2002. He was the county's state's attorney for eight years before becoming the county's chief executive.

Is this the same guy who had drugs mailed to his house? And then their dog shot by the cops?

maybe that wasn't a mistake. Maybe they really were having drugs mailed there. The plumber is checkin the pipes. ???

No, that was mayor of a small Maryland town whose name escapes me. Jack Johnson has been a PG County Executive for several years and was a state's attorney for PG before that.

Edit: The town was Berwyn Heights, which is in P.G. County.

Prince George's County Executive Jack Johnson and his wife, Leslie, have been arrested, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Maryland.

The Prince George's County political powers were taken into custody at about 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Johnson and his wife were both charged with tampering with evidence and destruction and falsification of records. Lawyers for both asked the judge to waive the formal reading of the charges, and law enforcement officials have not yet released details to the public. A news conference will be held soon. It will be live on NBC4 and NBCWashington.com

NBC4 witnessed police activity at Johnson's home in Mitchellville and at the county executive's office in Upper Marlboro.

A vehicle with a U.S. Treasury placard on the dashboard was spotted at the county executive's office, NBC4 reported.

Unmarked police vehicles also were seen at Johnson's home with agents going in and out of the house. A first-floor window near the front door was broken at some point and was boarded up in the afternoon.

Jack Johnson eventually was escorted out of his home in handcuffs, NBC4's Tracee Wilkins reported. A woman with a coat over her head was also escorted out of the home.

A plumber who showed up at the scene said he was called to the home by FBI agents to make sure that no possible evidence was flushed down a toilet, Wilkins reported. He later left without finding anything. He said he was never told what he was looking for.

Jack Johnson, 61, has been the county executive since 2002. He was the county's state's attorney for eight years before becoming the county's chief executive. Leslie Johnson was recently elected to Prince George's County Council from District 6.

Johnson's staff told NBC4's Derrick Ward that if Johnson is unable to serve the county, Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for Health and Human Services Howard Burnett would be next in line.

UPDATE:

Prince George's Police Chief Roberto L. Hylton said Monday that three officers, two from Beltsville, were arrested this morning. He said the officer were picked up by federal agents at the station, but that the station was not being raided.

Sources with knowledge of the arrests say they are related to Friday's arrest of Prince George's County Executive Jack B. Johnson and his wife.

Each has been charged with evidence tampering and destroying evidence in a case the U.S. attorney called the "tip of the iceberg" in a broader corruption investigation in Prince George's.

Federal agents are said to be serving warrants at other locations in Beltsville and also at a liquor store in College Park, according to the sources.

Three police officers were arrested Monday morning as they came to work in Beltsville, according to sources with knowledge of the arrests. The arrest are said to be related to the Friday arrest of Prince George's County Executive Jack B. Johnson and his wife.

Each was charged with evidence tampering and destroying evidence in a case the U.S. attorney called the "tip of the iceberg" in a broader corruption investigation in Prince George's.

At least two of those arrested were Prince George's officers. One is a sergeant and the other is a corporal, according to sources.

Federal agents are serving warrants at other locations in Beltsville and also at a liquor store in College Park, according to the sources.
