Yeah you really cannot 'effort' your way to a good defense. I'll give Shep a pass this year because alot of what he can do is limited by his predecessor. Ultimately, a good defense will hide the weaknesses of their players. This year we have somehow mananged to stock a roster with guards/wings who cant stay in front of their man, while also not having anybody who is a rim protector. Bold strategy indeed

You need the right mix of talents to be balanced on both sides.  You can live with a no-defense great scorer like Isaiah Thomas as rotation guard, but not if Ish Smith and Brad Beal are in the rotation too.  For this to work out, we need John to come back and play good defense and team ball like Jrue Holiday, whereas the last few years he's just been playing star ball.

You can live with a Davis Bertans as a third or fourth big.  But not if Bryant, Hachimura, and Wagner are in the rotation too.

TBH, I think you can only realistically get away with a single soft big in your entire big man rotation and still hope to play good defense.  That's why I'm really really hoping that Hachimura becomes a good defensive player.  I think there is a chance that he will.  He is a good enough athlete to be a switch defender, and he has the right body for it.  It's about honing instincts and getting a man behind him who can control the paint and pull down boards because Hachimura needs to be aggressively playing the ball.

My fear is that Bryant will never be that guy, and I am uneasy about him getting that extension because it says to me that this regime thinks he will be and I'm not sure I can buy in to that.  I worry they're confusing effort/activity with effectiveness with Bryant.  I don't know that guys tend to grow into susbtantially better defensive players over time...

I think a legit defensive anchor big is our biggest offseason need.  It's the one addition that could get us out of the lottery in a single move.

As far as the wings go, I think Brown is good and has legit two-way ability and Bonga has the potential to get there.  Schofield is strong but short and not quick, I don't know that he'll ever be good enough defensively to crack a rotation on a contender.  Matthews is a pure gunner with no defensive ability.  We need another three and D wing with real size to cover up for how small the back court is.

The other big thing is we don't really need a scorer like Isaiah Thomas as the third guard when Wall returns.  That's tons of offense in the guard rotation between them and Beal.  What we need is a junk yard dog on ball defender like a Fred VanVleet.  You'd hope Wall could do it but I wouldn't bank on it.

So that's what I want to see from this high draft pick: defensive specialist guard, high caliber three and D wing, or defensive anchor big.

Gooden is in full cringe mode tonight...

But guys are playing well. Rui having a good bounce back game. Very aggressive.

Kutcher is bad, but with possible room for improvement

there is no hope for Mr. Gooden

Rui got game man. i take back what i said about Kutcher being salvageable, the man dropped a "konnichiwa" after Rui's dunk

I want a Japanese color commentator.  One from Japan, not from here, that will excitedly scream out some wild Japanese stuff every time Rui does some cool ****.  We can’t have Kutcher screaming konnichiwa because it’s the only word he knows.

Drummond starting to eat Bryant alive..

He should.  Every star versus role player matchup one on one should heavily favor the star.  Have you seen the numbers Drummond has been putting up this season?  Wizards either send help or live with it.

These announcers are awful.  They must be paying these guys peanuts to push out Chenier/Buckhantz.  Sheesh.

As long as Chris Miller has been the Wizards sideline reporter he's stood out is the least cool of the three.  He just wasn't on the level with Buck, Phil, and Kara.  That's all changed this season.

That's how bad this new duo is.

My biggest complaint is them dudes sound like its just a job for them. Buck & Phil were one of us, they had the same passion for the franchise that we do, if not more. Kara didnt have that, but she made up for it by being sharp as hell with everything and had a pretty damn good chemistry with Buck from the jump.

Kutcher & Gooden have no chemistry and just go through the motions

Tuned in for my first game of the season last night with the new broadcast team.  By far the most generic pro sports broadcast I can ever recall watching.  What exactly were they thinking?  I get shooting your shot and missing, but who would have ever thought this would be a successful pairing?  Worse, considering how great we had it for so many years with Buck and Phil.

Yea, I hated that Phil left by Kara was pretty good.  But losing Buck & Kara and being left with these two is awful.  Leonsis or whoever dropped the ball big time.
