Special K
(June 20) -- When a newlywed cancer survivor with a heart condition started showing stroke symptoms, her husband knew he needed to get her to the hospital immediately. Now, the new groom faces a felony charge from an encounter with a police officer he says delayed his wife's access to treatment. Just married last week, Eric and Aline Wright of Chattanooga, Tenn., both medical professionals at Erlanger Medical Center, were enjoying what was supposed to be their honeymoon when Aline's speech became slurred and her face began to droop on Wednesday. During the ride to the hospital, Eric says he stopped at two red lights but ran them both. After passing through the second red light, a police cruiser pulled behind the couple's vehicle, following it with lights and sirens on to the hospital. Can't believe I beat ACW to posting this...then again this story doesn't involve drugs
Reic
I think there are some situations where an officer has realized he or she has ****ed up, but is too damn prideful to just apologize.

Madison Redskin
I've thought for quite some time that police officers and teachers deserve huge raises ... but should be subject to much more exacting standards.
Fergasun
Considering that emergency medical care is something akin to a constitutional right... I'd think a civil suit is perfectly warranted as well as the damage to his reputation.
JustAfan47
Police Officer Prevents NFL Player From Seeing His Dying Relative Rules for police officers: The first rule of jerking around people you are ticketing is not to do it in front of the hospital where their relative is dying. The second rule is not to mess with people who have some measure of fame, at least enough to get the media interested. And the third rule is to remember that your dashboard camera is on. http://nfl.fanhouse.com/2009/03/26/police-officer-prevents-nfl-player-from-seeing-his-dying-relativ/ <object width="960" height="745"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77Q49VztpLI&hl=en_US&fs=1&hd=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77Q49VztpLI&hl=en_US&fs=1&hd=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="960" height="745"></embed></object> <object width="960" height="745"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzjg2EhNLY0&hl=en_US&fs=1&hd=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzjg2EhNLY0&hl=en_US&fs=1&hd=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="960" height="745"></embed></object>

Johnny Punani
All the guy needed to do was pull over and tell the officer what was going on. That would have taken about 30 seconds and I'm sure he would have got a police escort to the hospital. He did not and that is why he is in trouble. terpskins10
Doesn't surprise me that there's an IQ limitation to becoming a police officer. You give a moron who, 9 times out of 10, wouldn't succeed in getting a college education a badge and some power and this is what happens. I apologize in advance to any police officers on this board, this kind of stuff just sickens me. You just hear about this sort of thing way too many times to be completely confident in the type of people hired into law enforcement. It also baffles me that the supervisor brushed it off the way they did.

I agree with you there but it didn't sound like the officer was willing to listen to much. Definitely could have been handled better, but when someone you love is potentially dying, it's understandable that composure can go out the window. However, exacerbating the problem with an arrest and a felony charge is on the cop, not the couple. He could have let it go after learning of the details if he appealed to his own sense of morality, but he didn't.
fullnelson9999
People assume that someone who is rushing to the hospital in a life or death situation are calm or think outside of the here and now. IMO the guy did what he though was right. Pulling over was not an option for him, and I support the decision.

The Officer wasn't willing to listen to much because the guy never told him what was going on when he tried to pull him over in the first place. Anyway, I seriously doubt that guy is going to be prosecuted by the DA's office for this.

When someone is carrying an amputee anybody into the E.R. who is suffering a stroke, they shouldn't have to explain anything. Strokes are the third leading cause of death in the US and can kill someone in 3 mins... Have fun taking 30 seconds at any traffic stop, that just isn't going to happen. That's all fine and dandy and I'm sure most of us would do that without hesitation, but the mentality in a situation like this is completely different. Several years ago we were rushing my little niece to the hospital and she stopped breathing halfway there...you cannot tell me I would pull over (I wasn't driving, my mom was and my dad was doing vitals) and take the time to explain to the cop the situation. Hell no. And to interfere in the hospital AFTER the stop, dear Lord. This cop is a moron.

A stroke can kill you pretty quickly. A minute at a traffic stop and the wife could be dead. The guy was looking out for his wife. If I were in his situation I wouldnt give a **** about the cop wanting to pull me over.

Cops don't pull you over and then walk right up to you. They sit in their cars and run your plates, start filling out forms or whatever and usually take 5 minutes or more before sauntering up to your car to tell you what you did wrong. Now I don't fault cops for doing this, but if I had an emergency that dire I might not think I had that much time to wait.

And if the cop doesn't listen the wife becomes a veg or dies. I'd rather take the chance and pay the frickin' fine and spend the night in jail. A cop who would do this AFTER seeing the situation in front of his eyes at the hospital isn't going to be suddenly amiable and understanding on the side of the road. Some of those guys really are idiots on a permanent power trip. If my wife is dying, I'm not taking the chance that I draw one of them. Arrest me all you want, but my wife is getting to the hospital first. Afterwards we can start the long process of me suing the hell out of the police force and costing him his career if he so desires. But he's not killing my wife. ~Bang
