Is the Masters (golf) stepping on itself here?

The text messages are out there, as seen in another thread. They could easily be construed as misogynist. Now the good old boys at the all men Augusta are giving this guy a sanctuary to make his comeback. Not permitting women to join is one thing, allowing a confessed cheating, alleged women hitter a chance to put on a show is completely different. What a platform for women. The Masters truly screwed this one up. I would not be surprised if Tiger bails.

Ridiculous.

The Masters is the premiere tournament in golf. Tiger Woods, regardless of his personal troubles, is still the best golfer in the world, and a gigantic media draw. Having him there = cash money, and lots of it. You think they give a crap about the band of 40 people that occasionally show up to protest? I don't. Even if that number increases 10x, they still won't care. Having Tiger there will make viewership go up, not down.

He didn't cheat at golf. Therefore he can play. End of story. Most of the people who think otherwise are People magazine reading celebrity gossip-hounds who don't watch golf anyway. Their opinion doesn't matter to the folks at Augusta.

John Daly's trying to go clean, get in shape, etc..., and Tiger's out there talking about peeing on porn stars and choking hoes. Did I wake up in bizzaro world at some point in time and not realize it?

EDIT: Oops. I thought this was the other Tiger thread. While i'm here: I think the Masters will be fine. If Tiger comes back and plays well, "Costas" will be able spin together a nice feel good story about how "he's come back from so much", and if he misses the cut, no big deal, "Nancy" in the booth will say "can you blame him, he's had so much to overcome in the last few months". It's a win/win all the way around.

You obviously don't know the demographics for golf. The ones who don't watch this year probably never would have watched. The ones who don't watch b/c of his 'transgressions' were on the fringe anyway. As far as his core audience, it will be business as usual.

ESPN & CBS will get monster ratings for the Masters. CBS is happy Tiger isn't coming back this weekend for NBC as it would devastate the basketball ratings.

CBS is gonna own ABC & NBC for the next month. And even as I type this another Master's commercial comes on ESPN. They've obviously been running commercials for the tourney since January, but I think they've really stepped it up the last few days since Tiger made his announcement.

The Masters does get alot of viewership from people who won't watch the John Deere Classic simply because it's a major, but you're right those of us who are diehard golf watchers will watch regardless of whether Tigers playing or not.

On a sidenote my roommate watched some of it with me last year, and she thought I was a spaz because I knew all the holes, and could recant shots played on specific holes in past years. Of course I spent about an hour telling her about Tigers chip on 16 in 05'. Shots like that are why I watch the Masters.

Why anyone cares about Tiger's personal life is beyond me. I'm glad he's coming back and I will now support him more than ever.

He may be from Duke but he has a point. What he does off the golf course is none of our business. And then people act like it's such a big deal, just let the guy play golf and if he does well this whole female drama will dissipate.

He got caught doing what so many celebrities get caught doing. Do we still blast Letterman...or Clinton...it's all in the past. And after Tiger kicks ass again we'll forget about his transgressions too.

I bet anyone would be quite upset if personal events in their life, that actually only concern a few people would prohibit them from pursuing their profession.

So why is it different for Tiger? He is a pro golfer, has not been found guilty of cheating in his profession, and during his career has seen the sports popularity rise to new heights. So why would they prohibit him?

I don't condone what he did, but it has nothing to do with how he can hit a golf ball.

I am usually a homer towards the LA Times, and I don't mind Plaschke. A lot of people hate Plaschke for various reasons.

But this is one time where I can say I definitely do not agree.

Important Article

There is a saturation point, and a time when a story gets completely over-covered to the level where everything anyone says is just noise and all you can do is laugh. South Park clearly realizes this. Some American sports columnists…not so much.

The day the news broke that Tiger was coming back, I turned on ESPN for a minute to get a pulse of the coverage. Bad timing on my part, as the pulse I got was a hot-and-bothered Bill Plaschke talking about how selfish Tiger was being for coming back at the Masters. In the LA Times the next day, Plaschke continued that thought:

The Masters tournament is one of the last sports events that is bigger than any of the athletes who compete there. Woods' comeback will completely swallow it.

Forget the green jacket. The only article of clothing that will concern anyone will be something worn by Tiger Woods' wife Elin, if she attends.

LMAO Overreaction.

"You see, because the man's an addict. He can't control himself. He could be having sex with my wife and kids right now while I'm talking to you." It's an amazingly wonderful job by the DN reporters to start their story by talking to a resident who wants to protect his 12- and 16-year old daughters from Woods, thus insinuating that he is not only a sex addict, but also an uncontrollable pedophile.

IT'S UNSAFE TO KEEP YOUR KIDS AROUND TIGER WOODS, HE'LL TRY TO DO SOMETHING. HE'S A MONSTER OH MAN THINK OF THE CHILDREN.

Article also involves Stephen A Smith pontificating in hilarious fashion.

Well said. It's all about the $$$. CBS and the PGA are hoping he makes cut since he hasn't been playing much.

Once Tiger wins a major, or any tourney the media coverage and the country's perception of him will return to normal which is that of a golf player rather than a "sex addict."

Everyone makes more money if Tiger is there. Simple as that.

Also, I realize a lot of people would be shocked by what he wrote. I haven't read them all but a lot of that stuff is just role playing. I dated a few girls who were into that back in college. Sometimes you stop and say "uh, are you OK?" and they're like "yeah, keep going." Sounds wierd I'm sure. Tiger is a real dumbass for putting it in writing! :ols:

1. you stay outta Tiger's life, he'll stay out of yours.

2. Not allowing women to participate in physical competition with men is common sense and does not deem anyone a "misogynist"

Interesting how many of you feel that the Master is about money. It's not. The club is run and owned by billionaires. They give away the TV rights for practically nothing, compared to what they could get, and in return CBS takes a loss for the exposure. It's NOT a PGA Tour event, so the PGA gets some exposure, but does not benefit directly from a financial standpoint. The players would play it for free. The Masters/Augusta does NOT benefit financially, one penny, in letting Tiger play. The old guard there has always been rather anti-establishment. In my mind, this is the only reason Tiger is in. They are not the type of guys who are told what to do. They have always respected the tradition of their "men only" status, while tip-toeing the line of being "anti-female". This latest knowledge of Tiger's escapades crosses that line, and a zealous press could drive the point home. This is the break that the opposition has been waiting for and I would be very surprised if they did not seize upon it.

I agree with the OP.

Hypothetically speaking, if he texted my daughter or treated her the way he treated his mistresses (allegedly from the text), I would kick his ass. If I was Elin's dad, I would be figuring out how to get control of a Predator drone.

I guess its all cool that we can treat women like objects. I'm surprised there aren't women right's groups protesting this, however it's clear they lost the battle with the wide-spread acceptance of porn.
