My Band Got Scammed This Weekend - Embarassing Story!

One possible explanation. She could also work for the other place, getting bands and patrons to go somewhere they would not necessarily play if not scammed. Then getting a cut from the bar and cover charge.

That's true. Although the fact that she has sent out similar invites to events with this same name, then changed them to OTHER small venues in the DC area (rather than the same one each time) is even more confusing. Plus, her profile says she is from New York, although obviously now I don't know whether that is true or not. Could be another lie to keep people from being able too meet with her too far in advance of the show.

assembled a guest list of over 100 of our fans to come into DC and attend this upscale event.

She also had the audacity to tell us that the ticket prices for the event were to remain at $20 each and we were to split any intake from attendees with her 50/50.

So if all these different groups are there (bands, fash show, etc), how are you going to get 50% at the door? everyone else works for free?

It does sound like she ran a bait and switch game on you. Empyrean Skyloft may actually exists, clubs change their names so much in DC.

Good luck.

Nah, the skyloft doesn't exist, we checked with the front desk they said theyve had models and other bands come in looking for it before. Originally the "deal" was that anyone we brought in, we got 50% of their ticket sales. If the other bands brought in people, they got 50% of those sales. Luckily we didn't pay her anything up front, the main thing that was damaged was our credibility for people who took time out of their schedule to come see us. We were playing more for the exposure to the bunch of "promoters" who were supposed to be there, not the money.

So you signed a contract to play at a venue you've never heard of or been to?

That's not too unusual. Thankfully, it was an in town gig. I've heard of people getting rooked into a cross country trip to play at a decent venue only to find themselves...

Sucks that happened. To anyone espousing legal remedies, that will be more time and money consuming then the date and headache is worth, especially for a 50% door deal contract or no contract. Honestly, contracts at that level aren't worth the paper they are printed on though you should have them regardless.
