ah, just read you WILL be there. Katie said she will be starting a thread about her tailgate sometime soon, so you'll have to stop by.

Pier 39 is cool, lots of fun shops. Lombard Street is fun, too. I'm going to watch this thread bc we'll be there from the 27th-the 30th so we are going to be looking for stuff to do, too.

alcatraz= yawn???? you're outta your mind, that's the best place ever. I'm really into that kind of thing, though, so I'm biased.

Well, if you will be there on the 28th you can go to the game with keeastman and me!!!!

I did the Alcatraz tour when I was 12 years old. Maybe I didn't appreciate it then, but I don't remember it being anything great. I love the story of the three guys who escaped through the tunnel in the wall and were never found, but the tour didn't seem to go into that as much as I had hoped. I might have just been to young.

Definitely! Look forward to seeing all the west coast ES'ers at the game

I just find it really cool to be in an actual place where the criminals lived. To see what they saw. To be in buildings they were in. Jails fascinate me as well, so in all it's an exciting place for me. Also, I love the ferry ride and the anticipation :) I want to go to the tour at night, though- they were all sold out when I went.

Chinatown is a fantastic place to walk around. Probably my favorite part of SF. I also highly recommend Little Italy. In SF, the Little Italy neighborhood is called North Beach...some excellent Italian restaurants there.

Ghiraredelli Square and Fisherman's Wharf are very touristy, but they're ok if you want to check them out. Haight Ashbury is a pretty cool neighborhood to walk around in.

I'm not aware of any casinos.

I haven't been to the wine country out there, but I hear it's great if you're into wine at all.

My wife and I went to SF for our honeymoon, so we hit a couple nice restaurants. Cafe Mozart at Nob Hill www.cafemozartsf.com is very nice and has great food, if you're looking for a place like that. Also, the Grand Cafe inside the Hotel Monaco is great.

Hey - you are right near me. I live just over the hill from the Haight.

I'll be at the game with Keeastman and MissU28....

so you aren't invited. They are gonna be my harem. :D

And I can't believe you dissed Alcatraz. I love that trip. Alcatraz is cooler than anything.

Ok - on your list I recommend skipping Fisherman's Wharf. It's mostly a buncha Tshirt shops and tacky crap. If you do go there, check out the Musee Mechanique. It's a huge collection of old coin-op amusements, very cool.

The WW2 submarine right behind the museum is also cool - very claustrophobic.

Other than that - the Wharf sucks unless you really like Cotton Candy and the Ripleys Believe It or Not Museum :silly: The food there flat out sucks, and it's a crime to eat bad food in this town.

Pier 39 is another tourist trap, but it does have the advantage of having a huge crowd of wild sea lions at the far end, so it is well worth a visit.

Just below Ghiradelli Square is the maritime park, with old sailing ships that you can explore.

Rent bikes near Ghiradelli and ride along the water out to underneath the GG Bridge. Its a great route through parks and beaches, and at the end is Old Fort Point, a well preserved relic of Civil War times.

Don't miss the newly rebuilt Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park. It is excellent, expecially the aquarium and planetarium. If you want to get into the planetarium, you need to go early in the day to get your tickets. Nearby is the Japanese Tea Garden, which is worth a stop. Also in the park is the Conservatory of Flowers, which has a great Victorian feel.

The Exploratorium is more for kids - with a ton of hands on science stuff. Take your girlfriend into the Tactile Dome... you have to find your way out by touch. ;)

Chinatown is great. Go up the side streets.

Take a walk up Telegraph hill. Go up in Coit Tower and explore the stairways and gardens that cling to the east side.

If you want to ride a Cable Car, I recommend taking the California Street line starting at Market and California rather than the Powell/Mason lines. The queue is much shorter. It goes over the top of Nob Hill, and you cna check out the Cathedral. Plus then when you return you can get some food at the Ferry Building, which is very nice, especially on the days that the Farmer's Market is open.

If you want some culture, check out the Asian Art Museum, which is right across from City Hall. Actually, City Hall itself is fascinating - it is more grand than the Capital building in most countries. The main art museum is the DeYoung in Golden Gate Park.

If the weather is nice and you want to hit a beach, the best one (IMO) is Baker Beach, in the Presidio. Be aware that the north end of the beach is clothes optional.

Too bad you are here in the winter. You will get to experience Candlestick - THE worst football stadium in the land, rather than experiencing the Giants Ballpark, which is THE best baseball stadium in the land. You can still snoop around at the baseball park, and probably go inside.

Will you have a car? the next few things require one.

You should cross the GG Bridge and go up the Marin Headlands. The view is unreal, there are some neat old WWII bunkers to explore, and you end up at the most fantastic little lighthouse. The lighthouse is only open Sat, Sun and Mon, but it is a one of a kind short hike. 5 stars.

If you are into history, go to the USS Hornet in Oakland and crawl around a highly decorated WWII aircraft carrier.

Driving around Pacific Heights just to see how the uberwealthy live is kind of fun. There is one block of Broadway that has the homes of at least 5 billionaires, which is nuts.

Oh yeah - if you like nekkid ladies, the O'Farrell Theater is one of a kind or so they say. :silly:

Thanks for the info Predicto. I am staying on Baker and Fulton. I will be out with my family and won't have a car. I guess i'll take your advice and stay away from the Warf District. I don't know if I will have to end up going with family however. My mom grew up there so I can't imagine she would want to see it again.

How is the weather? I would guess its in the 50's.

Any good bars in Haight?
