Freddie Mercury

Bing Crosby

Bob Dylan

Neil Young

Patsy Cline

Judy Garland

Paul Robeson

Ray Charles

Barbra Streisand

Otis Redding

Stevie Wonder

The best singer currently - Christina Aguilera, hands down.

Wow man, major props on Paul Robeson, that man was truly a great singer and a greater man. It's a shame that McCarthyism essentially removed him from history.

You people dissing on James Brown don't know squat about SOUL.

Not that Cobain's screaming wasn't soulful (I do think he belonged on the list), but to suggest that he and James Brown are interchangeable as singers b/c they "scream" is ridiculous.

My top 5 probably would have gone thusly:

1) Sam Cooke

2) Bon Scott

3) Marvin Gaye

4) Ronnie James Dio

5) BB King

Rolling Stone sucks ass in general, so it's no wonder this list sucks. It's also no surprise why people keep this magazine next to their toilets.

Hate Rolling Stone all you want, but for this list, they're simply reporting results.

If you don't like the results, look at the list of voters. Is there a genre or industry that you think is underrepresented in the list of voters? To me, it's a pretty broad spectrum of musicians, reviewers, and industry people.

They're the ones who voted. Rolling Stone is just the cipher.

I think you could put Scott Weiland, Maynard Keenan and Josh Homme on this list too.

Well, Maynard Keenan was a voter. He voted himself number 1, and left the rest of his ballot blank. A couple of posters defended him for it, saying it was a protest against Rolling Stone(?), but it looked kinda dickish to me.
