Trade - Erasmus James

all I know is that he was a beast in college. Doesn't look like he is a sure bet to pass a physical though. A good gamble with not much on the table.

IF he doesn't pass the physical, this could lead to some interesting scenarios:

1. If we put him on the PUP, do we still have the rights to him?

2. Is the FO thought process that this guy will be ready mid-year or even next year, so we would IR him and let the old college coach work with him?

In the short run, I do not think he is an answer but, he could end up being a steal.

I dunno...ask Fred Smoot.

Great answer...i love the redskins but the fans are sometimes tough to take...how can u not like this move....if he doesnt prove anything in training camp the redskins give up nothing...has nice upside and the coaches know him...like a previous poster said if he makes the team and they give up the 7th rounder its no big deal...u move down a little in the 6th round or 5th round and u get it back.

very low risk move

"James has had three surgeries on his left knee and has missed 24 games over the past two seasons. The Redskins believe James is 90 percent healed from his most recent surgery and would have a chance to be healthy by the start of the regular season."

Yeah, but we only gave up a 7th for him. Worst case we will cut him at the end of training camp or sooner. It all depends if we fine someone better.

We only give up a 7th if he makes the roster - if he doesn't, worst case - we don't lose anything. Best case - we lose a 7th and get a monster pass rusher who can play the run as well.

Hopefully this guy will turn out for us like Kyle Vanden Bosch did for the Titans. Drafted by Arizona and was pretty much hurt his first four years with blown out ACL's in both knees. Missed two full years. Came back and has been a Pro Bowl player for the Titans. Erasmus is young and hopefully hungry. He is with a coach who knows him from college in Palermo. Coach Palermo also per his interview on Redskins.com seems to have faith he can come back. I love this pick up!!

VIKINGS TRADE JAMES TO ‘SKINS

Posted by Mike Florio on May 27' date=' 2008, 5:28 p.m.

As it turns out, the Minnesota Vikings didn’t cut defensive end Erasmus James after all.

Instead, the reported move was rescinded by the Vikings on Tuesday, and James has been traded to the Washington Redskins for a conditional seventh-round draft pick.

“We really liked Erasmus coming out of college,” executive V.P. of football operations Vinny Cerrato said. “He’s young and talented, and he has a great deal of potential. We like the fact that his defensive line coach at the University of Wisconsin — John Palermo — is our current defensive line coach.”

James was a first-round pick of the Vikings in the 2005 draft.

Your right, I did not see that it was a conditional 7th rd. Makes the trade even better when we have nothing to lose.

One thing Vinny said was that they would place a higher premium on players that the coaches already had a history with...guess that only helped in this instance.

Also possibly puts the passing up of Calais Campbell in a slightly brighter light.

Obviously we'll all be watching calais and merling closely for the next few years....We'll see how it shakes out...

Kudos to the front office. If it doesn't pan out we don't lose anything. If it does work we give up a 7th round pick for a DE that can play all three downs. Fantastic.

7th round picks are very easy to recoup. Trading down a few spots in the 6th can easily get you a 7th, we did that this year.

I hope he passes the physical and he's 100% by training camp. A change of scenery and his old college positional coach just might reawaken his game.

the vikes waived him then retracted the fact that they waived him....we traded for him just prior to him hitting the FA market looks good so if he is sorry we dont lose anything

if he doesn't make the roster we lose nothing, if he can heal and contribute... will be a steal for a 7th
