Do you think they keep the job in the family, or go outside(Cowher, Carroll, etc...) for their new coach?

Just heard George Michael on DC101 telling Elliot that "under no certain terms will Dan Snyder place a call regarding the coaching position to Cowher"

This was after he had a long conversation last night with Joe Gibbs regading his leaving

Bram just reported that GW does NOT have the $1 million clause in his contract.

Bram said that he asked someone in the staff, and they replied that the people reporting that never asked the right people.

Not that it mattered, but now its out there.

Contract could be rewritten to bring him into position. Time to pray to the football gods!!! I don't know about anyone else but I can't handle another 15 yrs without structure!

I think GW should be given a shot at the head coaching job.

Charles Mann said this mourning on 9 news that they should bring in a new fresh face.

This is not Cowher or another recycle coach from the NFL.

He want's it to be someone from the college ranks that is hot or one of the fresh new NFL guys. I guess Charles is around my age & his memory is going a little bit.

Did Charles forget that Stevie boy was here not that many years ago.

Williams will probably get the job... but I don't think he'll do well as HC.

I don't think he has what it takes to be the head guy. He's unbending and stubborn, for one... today's players need a little more flexibility from their head coach and Gregg has shown he isn't too flexible about most things.

I just have a bad, bad feeling about him in Washington. Maybe somewhere else where they have a strong GM, Gregg would do ok... but with Snyder not being the best at finding talent and being so stubborn about things, I just see a complete failure if we hire him. :2cents:

I hope I'm wrong.

I think the "Rooney Rule" only applies if you make the decision to interview outside candidates. If you decide right away to promote from within, you don't necessarily have to interview outside candidates or minorities.

Not sure if that's a good idea or not to only look in house when there seem to be some interesting choices out there though.

From JLC's Blog

The Rooney Rule

Spoke to more people inside Redskins Park. The staff, all of whom remain under contract right now, was informed this morning that the organization must go through a hiring process to comply with NFL rules. They are all essentially in limbo right now. The staff was told nothing about any possibile organizational structure changes, - ie who would replace Gibbs, need for a GM, etc.

Received some emails about the exact nature of the Rooney Rule in terms of minority hiring in the NFL. I contacted the league for the official statement, as there was some confusion if you had interview a minority candidate it a team was going to hire from within. And, yes they do; there is one exception to the rule that does not apply in this case.

Here's the NFL briefing on the rule from 12/20/02:

"On the December 19-20 conference calls, the owners strongly agreed on the principle that any club seeking to hire a head coach will interview one or more minority applicants for the position. The one exception occurs when a club has made a prior contractual commitment to promote a member of its own staff and no additional interviewing takes place (e.g. Mike Martz and the St. Louis Rams in 2000)."

This doesn't change my opinion in regards to maintaining continuity within the team. With this core group of players and coaches, great things can still be achieved. My only worry is whether or not Williams and Saunders can co-exist.

Williams and Saunders should be able to coexist easily. Gregg really won't have much say in the offense because he is a defensive specialist. Al will be able to do as he pleases with play calling now.

There really should be no problems. IMHO.

They will obviously interview several candidates. They can't just hand the job to one individual without at least interviewing a minority candidate. League rules.

If I was a minority, that rule would highly offend me. I'd rather see a minority candidate be considered because he earned it rather than getting it simply because someone made it a rule and now teams are just going through the motions.

Just promote Gregggg to HC and make Blatche (sp?) DC and keep Al as OC.

I really don't care who becomes head coach, just as long as Al stays with the offense. I don't want to go thru another offseason of learning a new offense.

The less change, the better.

Bingo!

Both sides of the ball were playing very well, all things considered (injuries, young QB most of the year). Both systems offensively and defensivley are are effective and will only get better. With all due respect to Coach Gibbs (and there is more of that than can be expressed), him leaving does not call for a complete overhaul of coaches or coaching philosophy.

We have enough coaches so as it is. The right decision is already with us. Here's to hoping we do the right thing. :logo:

Well that explains Dans run around answer to the question of who will be our next HC. The good old "Rooney Rule"......

That and the press conference today was about Gibbs and only Gibbs.

Dan is going to have to bring in at least one minority candidate to interview along with Williams. To make it look good he might bring in one or two more to make it look like he is seriously looking at other candidates.

Even without the clause, IMO, GW is still the best guy for HC. This has been pointed out several times, but not hiring in-house will not do good for team chemistry, and it would be stupid to break up what Gibbs was building that brought this team back to respectability.
