Simeon Rice

When you cover the Redskins you expect to get a flood of emails whenever a big-name player is cut. And if he happens to be a D Lineman, or, in particular, a pass-rushing D end, well, forget about it.

So with Simeon Rice suddenly on the street, I was prepared for the influx of questions, and you guys didn't let me down. Okay, here's what I know. The Skins didn't rush into anything as soon as he was cut and there were no organization-wide discussions about Rice last night.

If they went solely on the reports scouts and coaches have on Rice, there would be significant concerns. His age, fitness, shoulder status (failed a physical with the Bucs), attitude in the locker room, and motivation on the field (seen as a guy who wants to get sacks and isn't worried about the team concept; a one-trick pony who doesn't do much against the run) would be major issues.

However, with this ownership/management team, you can never say never when a guy like Rice is on the street. And this case a little unique as many in the organization who have self-scouted the roster would admit the lack of an impact pass rusher is troubling. Now, is Rice still an elite force or is he someone who will be hit or miss chasing the QB and can only get on the field in certain third down situations?

Many in NFL circles would say he's closer to the hit or miss part, but, considering all he has accomplished in this game, it's hard to see Rice not wanting to be compensated like a star.

From Rice's perspective, some people close to him have the Redskins on the short list of teams they think might express interest. But, as I've said in the past, that's nothing new because there isn't an agent in the NFL who does not want the Skins in on any negotiation as the price tends to skyrocket. Also, some people close to Rice would tell you that the Bucs letting him go had much more to do with his $7 million base salary than his shoulder problem and that he is raring to go and could be a major boost to any roster he lands on.

So, what to make of all of this? Glad you asked.

My sense now, and, admittedly, we are crazy early in the whole process, is that the Skins will keep an eye on him, try to get a feel for his health and see where the money goes. I don't see them rushing in, setting the market or making a big push - I think Detroit and some other clubs will show the deepest interest - and I think there are a lot of people in the building here who would have reservations about brining in this guy now, so far along in the offseason. Would he be okay with being a situational guy? Would he fit in?

At the right price, who knows. And I know Simeon is a well spoken dude who could probably allay some fears in conversations with the team. It's an interesting scenario and one I will stay on top of to the best of my ability. I don't rate it a high likelihood as of this moment, but, again, these things have a way of swaying all over the place. Will post more as I gather it.

As for Landry, they were pretty far along last night, talking about escalators and bonuses. If the deal isn't completed by late this afternoon for any reason, I would be pretty surprised if it lasted more than another day. There was continued optimism on both sides as of very late last night.

While I don't think we need him, I can't sit here and say he wouldn't help us out. I don't think anyone can argue that he wouldn't be an upgrade over Phillip Daniels from a pass rushing standpoint. If he turns out to be healthy, I say we show some interest in him... as long as we don't break the bank in the processs.

But who knows what we'll do.. we should be ok with what we have now, but the Skins should at least look into it.

My 2 cents.

If Rice has the Redskins on a short list of places to play then you know he wants to play for a team he feels is going to win and pay him. Now that is said the thing I see happening is that we watch and wait. We give him a try out after or when he passes a physical then let him do his touring of other teams he has on his list. Then let him determine what is more important to him. Money or winning. If it is winning then he will be in Burgundy and Gold. If it is money he will be somewhere else.

I think in the end Rice will end up with Lions going back with Coach Marinelli and that Tampa 2 scheme. I actaully wouldn't be shocked if the Lions picked him up rather quickly. Great news on Landry tho i think the deal will be done before camp begins this evening

Just ask Chris Samuels if Rice can still get the job done. He's never fared well against him.

It would be interesting to see if he would be a 3rd down pass rushing specialist for us, you don't see too much of that anymore. Charles Haley made a pretty good contribution in that role with the 9ers and Cowgirls.

You might be right, I recall the hoopla we had over signing Sam Adams. We ultimately didn't and Denver acted quickly and signed him. If the Lions really want this guy and we are waffiling, Lions will likely swoop in quick and get it done.

You took the words right out of my mouth..

Samuels (a pro-bowler) ALWAYS has trouble against Rice, so we have enough tape on the guy to see what he's capable of. I'm afraid that our sorry pass rush is a product of the lack of defensive scheme than defensive talent.

Rice probably wouldn't want to play here anyway :(

Funny thing is we don't always seem quick on the trigger to sign released players. Seems as if its not as fun to do that than it is to trade and give up draft picks.

That's a very good point. Maybe Rice will sign with Detroit, then we can offer them a 1st, and 4th round pick in 08' for him..

That's the ticket!

Well, it only appears that we are quick on the trigger, when the team has to wait until March to sign FA. By then, you certainly know who you want and you should act fast to get the guys you want.

Personally, I'm glad we don't shoot from the hip with most of these late releases.

You know, I'm sick of JLC's "But with this organization, you never know what they'll do". It has been a while since the Skins have behaved like that.

I don't think Rice will become a Redskin.

I just said this in another thread, but what the hell :D; I don't understand why the Bucs would say that they released Rice because he failed a physical, when actually they were just trying to free up some cap space. Why would they even find it necessary to lie?

You do realize we went 5-11 last year and have had 1 playoff season in about the last decade, don't you? You know that every media outlet is predicting a losing season for us, right? You do remember that we have the biggest reputation in the NFL for overpaying players, don't you?

So, if he wants to win he comes here, right?

I don't think they would. There likely has to be something up with his health, I'd bet.

Bruce Smith II, the electric Boogaloo.. Not worth the dime, or free call if he has verizon... NO MORE OVER THE HILL, BROKEN DOWN PLAYERS!!! You just setting yourself to rebuild in few years..

Not saying I want him, but you can give him a 2 year deal worth about $7 million with some escalators and the 2nd year could be voided if he ends up getting hurt or we just want him for one year. There are ways of getting around this without upsetting the delicate balance of the future. We've given up no draft choices, so it's like bringing in Corey Bradford. What's the harm? Would an extra 7-10 sacks be worth it? Maybe.

MY GOD people! Can we please stop snatching up everyones GARBAGE. YES GARBAGE. He failed a physacle for ***k sake. He's WASHED UP. If this man was worth a fart he would still be there. I mean look at brunell. We keep him around for the experience and know how if something goes wrong. (get my point?) Everyone needs to ban together on this one and scream NNNNOOOOOO! maybe someone higher up the food chain will hear it.

Please let old yellers just go ahead and DIE!
