Mr. S Posted June 5, 2007 Share Posted June 5, 2007 I haven't seen a discussion about college fight songs in a while (last I saw one was 2004). On that note, I wanted to ask what people would rank as their favorite fight song is. Vote on bias, alma mater, etc..., just vote. I personally think Notre Dame's is far and away the best song, even though I don't really like ND. No song is as well known as that song is in the US, probably behind the Star Spangled Banner and the patriotic songs. "Contrary to popular belief, "Rocky Top" is not UT's official fight song, although it is so closely identified with the university that many believe this to be the case. UT's official fight song is a radically different piece called "Here's To Old Tennessee", adapted from the Yale University fight song "Down the Field"." Yes, we all know this. But saying that "Rocky Top" is similar to "Jump Around" is just dumb. For all intents and purposes it is the fight song for UT and the state of TN. :finger: .... Yes, another vote for Rocky Top from this biased UT fan. Predicto Posted June 5, 2007 Share Posted June 5, 2007 In my opinion, there are basically three truly great classic college fight songs: Michigan, Wisconsin and Notre Dame. An argument could be made for any one of them and you wouldn't be wrong. I go with Michigan since I went there for grad school, but the other two are also awesome. If I had to add any others to the list, I would probably choose the Ramblin Wreck of Georgia Tech, Rocky Top or that Sothern Cal Fanfare (which isn't a whole song but we all know it). I like Rocky Top, a lot, but the thing is - if you go to a bar in Seattle or Boston or Hawaii and start whistling Rocky Top, not many people are going to recognize it as "that colleg fight song." It is sort if like "Anchors Aweigh" for Navy. A great song but maybe not the most classic college football fight song. Not like the Notre Dame/Michigan/Wisconson songs. Those three are like the throwbacks to a more innocent time of racoon coats and those little triangular rah-rah pennants. Or at least it seems that way to me.
