Redskins Lines Once Again Fail Team

Campbell made some plays. No interceptions. Cooley was productive even with the separated shoulder. Springs prevented one TD with the goal line interception.

But it wasn't enough.

The real tale of the tape in this game was time of possession and the battle up front.

The Redskins lost on both counts.

Cadillac Williams and the Bucs run game had averaged 3.7 yards per rush through the first 9 games and yet the Redskins defensive front allowed 200 yards rushing to this group. Williams consistently gained the edge on this defense and on few plays this afternoon did the Redskins make a play behind the line of scrimmage.

Factored in here is the fact the Bucs don't have a single offensive lineman considered to be an elite player. No Orlando Pace, No Jonathan Ogden. No Steve Hutchinson. No LeCharles Bentley.

That shows the real skill deficit on the Redskins DL. To add insult to injury, the pass rush did little this afternoon, causing Williams to have to blitz his backs in the second half, and this lead to two plays over 20 yards for what has been a horrible Bucs offense.

Gradkowski and 35 year old Joey Galloway along with that much maligned ground game held the ball for 40 minutes in this game.

Unbelievable.

On the other side of the ball, the overrated Redskins line went into battle against a Bucs team without half of its front seven.

Simeon Rice was missing. Ellis Wyms was missing. Shelton Quarles was missing. Anthony McFarland was traded to the Colts 2 weeks ago. In addition Brian Kelly is out for the season.

Against this unit, the Redskins offensive line couldn't open any holes. The only rushing yardage the Redskins got was off a few select plays from TJ Duckett, who used his 254 pound frame to break tackles and give second effort.

Campbell's mobility in the pocket gave the line a better stat line than it deserved as he dodged 3 or 4 plays that would most likely have been sacks for Mark Brunell.

The bottom line is that Campbell can continue to improve and play well but if the offensive line can't fire out and create some holes in the run game and the defense can't stop runners before they hit the second level, this team is going to have problems winning another football game.

You can look at Campbell who is 24 and just starting his career and maintain hope he is going to build on this game.

On defense there is little immediate hope. This is a train wreck of a unit. The 20 points allowed were misleading. If this was anyone other than the impotent Bucs the defense would have been creased for 35 or more.

Outside of Sean Taylor and Carlos Rogers, this defense is a veteran unit with a lot of players on the other side of 30.

To see how much this unit has fallen, particularly up front where in 2004 the line was stout against the run even if there was no dominant rushman.

Now there is still no rush, but the line can't stop anyone at the point of attack either.

Where is the improvement going to come from? Daniels (33)? Wynn (32)? Salavea (32)? Marshall (30)? Holdman (31)? Springs (31)?

My argument for getting Rocky McIntosh out on the field is the same as the argument for starting Jason Campbell.

The incumbents are on the downside of their careers, there is going to be no renaissance collectively without an infusion of talent.

If we can get McIntosh wet-nursed in the NFL at the same time we are acclimating Campbell that is going to save us a lot of anxiety heading into 2007, at least at weakside linebacker where you usually expect to see the one of the frontline playmakers in the 4-3 defensive alignment.

Anyone seen big plays out of Warrick Holdman lately?

Great post! I concur 100%...our lines are getting blown off the ball on both fronts...especially the D-Line. Once again, Andre Carter a no show. He hesitates, almost stops-starts on a lot of his pass rushes like he's not sure how he wants to rush. He doesn't commit to the rush and sucks on Run D unless it's downfield. Cedrick Golston is the best DL this year and he's a rook....somehow Griffin and Salavea lost their fire..maybe just getting too old. Lemar Marshall has been horrible this year...can't shed blocks and is undersized for MLB.....We need to draft all D players in the draft, woodley from Michigan for pass rush!

Jason Campbell...thats all we need to talk about. Defense is what the coaches need to figure out.

Next Up: Panthers

What? It's true. We lost the battle up front... What makes this post ridiculous? The fact it's not about our quarterback situation?

Our defense is our main concern, but in case you missed it this thread is both about our offensive line woes and our defensive struggles...

Bulldog has been here since Day #1... and is a well-respected and informed member. You ought to listen to the people of value in this community.

You, OTOH, just finished POP Warner. So take a seat and speak when spoken to.

Great post Bulldog . . . I wholeheartedly agree with you - what the hell has happened to our lines?? Offensively we cannot create a push in the running game at all. Save for the Jaguars game our o-line has not produced one noteworthy performance in the running game . . . The defensive line . . . Yeah I don't know how the hell they have slipped so far. Griff and Big Joe are not as stout as they have been in the past. Why not try and rotate Montgomery in there a bit more?

Great post bulldog. Its nice to finally see people jump on the lines now that they dont have Brunell to put all of the blame on. We are overpaying the o line. These guys are not openeing any holes for the backs. The d line? I wouldnt even call them a d line. They dont deserve it. Its disrespectfull to every other teams d linemen.

Good post, Bulldog.

This team is pathetic now. Whereas in 2004, Gibbs was great in picking up quality free agents, this past season, both he and Greg Williams bombed out.

The luster is off Greg Williams star now. This defense can’t play the run or the pass. Giving Archuletta and Andre Carter $30 million each is pathetic. If you look at Archuletta’s stats, he had never made the Pro Bowl and has a measley 3 INT’s in 6 seasons! What they saw in him I can’t imagine. Warrick Holdman on the other hand has NEVER been a playmaker! One INT in an 8 season NFL career is pathetic. And yet this journeyman starts.

The Redskins also don’t have ANY PLAYMAKERS on defense. 2 INT’s for the season thus far is horrible.

On offense, Randle El and Brandon Lloyd are good players, but they didn’t deserve $30 million each either, because neither one is an all Pro. Giving Randel El $30 million to return punts and be a part-time player on offense is stupid.

Its just too bad the Skins couldn’t have given Jason Campbell more help on offense and defense today.

Great post man, truly great i agree, Rocky needs to start, this season is over give the kid some playing time, and we need to draft linemen on both sides of the ball, AC is a complet bust, what the hell is he doing out there , nothing he sucks hes undersized. LM is having a bad year, he did good/great last year, but hes only going to get worse, we need a LB in the draft or we need to pick up one as a FA.
