Randy Couture vs. Chuck Liddell IV possible at UFC 99

http://www.sherdog.com/news/news/ufc-99-storms-germany-15288

Good things come to those who wait, and German mixed martial arts fans have had to wait for quite a while for the sport’s world leader, the UFC, to make its first inroads into the country.

The wait is over though.

The UFC will hold its first event in Germany on June 13 at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, the biggest indoor venue in the country with a maximum capacity of 20,000 seats. A contract between Zuffa and Marek Lieberberg, Europe’s leading concert promoter, was signed during the passing of UFC 91 in Las Vegas over a week ago.

BloodyElbow.com was the first to break the news on Monday, with a proposed heavyweight matchup between UFC icons Randy Couture and Chuck Liddell the lead candidate for main event honors.

Zuffa LLC, parent company to the UFC, is pushing for the fourth meeting between the promotion’s two most recognizable stars because of Couture’s unparalleled life story and, above all, for his ability to convey it in the German language.

Starting at age 19, Couture spent over four of his six years of U.S. Army service stationed at the famed World War II "Fliegerhorst" base of Langendiebach in Erlensee, Germany.

Couture holds a single victory over the noted striker via a third-round TKO at UFC 43 in June 2003. Liddell knocked out Couture at UFC 52 and UFC 57 two years later.

Whether or not that bout materializes depends on how soon the four-time Olympic wrestling alternate wants to continue his fantastic 12-year career following the heartbreaking second-round loss he suffered at the hands of Brock Lesnar at UFC 91.

Recently knocked off his featherweight perch by Mike Brown, Urijah Faber will make a quick turn and get right back in the cage on Jan. 25 at WEC 38. A little more surprising, however, may be whom he will be facing. Sources close to the bout tell MMAWeekly.com that Faber will rematch Jens Pulver at the San Diego event.

Although bout agreements have yet to be signed, sources indicate that both sides have verbally agreed to the rematch. Faber bested Pulver in a five-round war in their original outing on June 1 in Sacramento, Calif.

As mentioned, Faber is coming off of a knockout loss to current WEC featherweight champion Mike Brown. The defeat was his first as a featherweight and only the second of his career. Faber's first defeat was a lightweight bout against current UFC contender Tyson Griffin. He is still ranked No. 2 in the world as a featherweight.

Pulver is also coming off of a loss. At the same WEC 36 event in Hollywood, Fla., where Faber lost his title, Pulver lost his bid to return to contention. Greg Jackson-trained fighter Leonard Garcia – now the likely No. 1 contender to Mike Brown – TKO'd Pulver in the opening round.

given Pulver's recent struggles, i'm not that excited about this matchup. i think Faber should face a better opponent at 145.

I am not that thrilled either. I like them both, but I just do not think that this is the right time for them to fight again. There are a lot more interesting fights for Faber right now IMHO.

i was hoping they would match Faber against Jose Aldo to see who gets the shot after Leonard Garcia

Faber/Aldo would be a much better matchup at the present time than Faber/Pulver II

On that note, who else thinks Leonard Garcia is going to be the next FW champ? The guy packs incredible speed and power for a featherweight, and he's never been finished. And when you look at him, you expect him to sound like he has a strong latin accent, but dude talks like he's from JACKSIN MISSISSIP!

Mike Brown is solid, but Garcia has looked unstoppable since moving down to FW.

Pretty cool video game footage, though I don;t even think Keastman can make it through THAT many Lesnar clips.

I hope we don;t have to hear all that crap every time we play the game. This might be a game I play with the comentaters off and some music on.

Consider it an early Christmas present.

Eddie Alvarez and Shinya Aoki, two of the world’s top four lightweights, have verbally agreed to fight one another at K-1 “Premium 2008 Dynamite” on Dec. 31 at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan. Monte Cox, who manages Alvarez, confirmed the news to Sherdog.com on Monday.

Alvarez (15-1) and Aoki were on track to meet in the final of the Dream lightweight grand prix in July, but the American was unable to continue in the tournament after his grueling semifinal victory over Tatsuya Kawajiri. Aoki, meanwhile, went on to lose to alternate Joachim Hansen, the man Alvarez defeated in the quarterfinals.

A budding superstar and former Bodog Fight welterweight champion, Alvarez has made quite an impact since moving down in weight. Based out of Philadelphia’s Fight Factory, the 24-year-old has rattled off five straight wins since suffering the only defeat of his career -- a technical knockout loss to Nick Thompson in April 2007. Knockout victories over Brazilian Andre Amade and UFC veterans Aaron Riley and Derrick Noble anchor his impressive resume.

Alvarez, who married in September, still plans to compete at an Extreme Challenge show next month in Atlantic City, N.J. No opponent has been named.

One of the world’s premier submission grapplers, Aoki (18-3) last competed in September, when he submitted World Extreme Cagefighting veteran Todd Moore in 70 seconds at Dream 6. More than half (10) of the 25-year-old’s 18 career wins have come by submission. Seasoned by the Pride, Shooto and Deep promotions, Aoki holds notable victories against American Top Team ace Gesias "JZ" Cavalcante, Akira Kikuchi (twice) and Clay French. His loss to Hansen -- whom he also owns a win against -- in July ended a 13-fight unbeaten streak.

The Alvarez-Aoki showdown provides more star power for the traditional end-of-the-year K-1 show, which also includes a non-title lightweight fight pairing Hansen with Cavalcante and a long-awaited matchup between Kazushi Sakuraba and Kiyoshi Tamura. In addition, Dream middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi and Kawajiri will be in action in separate bouts held under K-1 rules.

two of my favorite fighters, i'm torn as to who i want to win this fight
