According to Askren, Dean even asked Lawler if he was out, and he didn't respond. Sure looked out. If he wasn't out, he probably would have been. Askren just sort of shrugged off a beating that would kill most people and went right back to his game plan like nothing happened. Bad stop, but entirely understandable.
