Jason needs a few years, We Need Phillp Rivers

I don't see how Rivers is going to be any more game ready than Campbell. Neither one of them have EVER played in a regular season game, and Rivers has only been in the league for one more year. He couldn't possibly be that far past the curve of learning NFL offenses, also Campbell would be more famillar with Gibbs' offense anyway.

I believe he meant that Gibbs was around then, and thusly had the opportunity to move up to draft him if he felt like it.

And "you're" means "you are". I believe you meant simply "your".

Just sayin....

I couldn't agree with you more...

If he traded a 2006 pick to get Campbell, of course he would have traded something to move up and get Rivers. HE DIDN'T WANT HIM.

I guess you can't count. He's been in the league 2 yrs. He wasn't a 25yr old rookie.So how is he 27 ?
Because he was married with children for two years before he came out of college. He's old for a second year QB. If I couldn't count, I'd have more sense than to think it would be reasonable to give the Chargers anything for an unproven QB with mechanics problems. Phillip Rivers reminds me of Ryan Leaf, except Leaf had more potential.

Rivers resume

OVERVIEW

The second-leading passer in NCAA history with 13,484 career passing yards — breaking school and Atlantic Coast Conference records — he also set an NCAA record with 51 career starts at quarterback … Rivers finished second in NCAA history with 13,582 career yards of total offense … He tied for fifth in NCAA history with 95 career touchdown passes and also broke school and ACC career records for passing attempts (1,710), pass completions (1,147), touchdowns responsible for (112), 300-yard passing games ( 18 ) and 400-yard passing games (7) … Philip started all 51 games (including 2000-01 bowls) of his four years and threw for at least 100 yards in every contest while posting a 34-17 career record as the starter … He is the first quarterback in ACC history — and the seventh in the history of the NCAA — to throw for 3,000 yards in three different seasons … He completed 110 of 161 passes in four bowl games for 1,202 yards, 10 touchdowns, three interceptions and rushed for 65 yards … His jersey number 17 was retired before his last home game (Nov. 22, 2003 vs. Maryland) … The most decorated passer in school annals, he also excelled in the classroom, graduating with a degree in business (Dec. 18, 2003), four days before suiting up for the final time for the Wolfpack.

ANALYSIS

Positives: Has a tall, linear build with adequate body thickness and good size for his position … Shows good arm strength and velocity … Smart athlete who makes proper judgments (rarely throws into traffic) … Has great poise and pocket presence; he will stand tall and deliver under pressure … Takes control in the huddle and is well-respected by his teammates … Displays above-average ball placement in the short-area passing game and throws a very catchable ball, knowing exactly when to zip the pigskin and when to show touch … Has a natural feel for when he needs to slide out of the pocket and avoid the pass rush … Always seems to be in sync with his receivers, doing an excellent job in timing his tosses and anticipating when to hit his targets in stride … Has a keen understanding of the offense, keeping his head on a swivel as he checks down the line … Vocal leader who works hard in the weight room and practices … Highly competitive type who is not afraid to "mix it up" when defenders get overaggressive … Has the body strength to fight off pressure and get free from the blitz … More comfortable in the short-to-intermediate passing game, displaying incredible accuracy … Not fast, but can buy time with his feet and maintains his accuracy throwing on the move (his precision allows him to squeeze the ball into tight areas) … Will need mechanical refinement, but much like Brett Favre, this kid is a flat-out winner.

Negatives: Won't ever hurt you by running with the ball, but has enough foot quickness and hip swerve to elude the rush and throw on the move … Needs to work on his foot quickness in his drops, but has made steady improvement in recent years … Throws the ball with a sidearm motion, but he can improvise and make plays with his creativity … Will struggle with his long tosses, as the ball will sail and hang on him (his best way to get the ball deep is through an awkward wind-up delivery) … His unorthodox style sees him keep the ball at his waist, displaying a low release, but he has good timing.

AGILITY TESTS

5.08 in the 40-yard dash … 375-pound bench press … 290-pound power clean … 33-inch vertical jump … 9-foot-8 broad jump … 32¼-inch arm length … 9¼-inch hands … Right-handed.

HIGH SCHOOL

Attended Athens (Ala.) High, playing football for his father, coach Steve Rivers … Hit on 109 of 195 passes for 2,025 yards and 15 touchdowns as a senior while also seeing action at free safety … Named Alabama player of the year … Graduated in December 1999 with a 3.7 grade-point average and enrolled at North Carolina State in time to compete in 2000 spring drills.

PERSONAL

Graduated in December 2003 with a degree in business … Married his high school sweetheart; wife's name is Tiffany … Couple has a child, Halle, born on July 6, 2002 … Born Dec. 8, 1981 … Resides in Athens, Ala.

Andre Ware (University of Houston, 1989)

In his junior season at Houston, Ware set major college records by throwing for 4,699 yards and 46 TDs, leading the Cougars to a 9-2 record. He declared for the NFL draft, forgoing his senior year, confident that he had impressed NFL scouts. After one pre-draft workout, a scout declared, "Gentlemen, we are looking at the next great quarterback in the National Football League."

'Twasn't to be.

The Lions picked Ware in the first round of the 1990 draft, and gave him a $1 million signing bonus. But Ware rarely got off the bench in his four NFL seasons with Detroit and Minnesota. Ware's career totals: 83 completions in 161 attempts for 1,112 yards and five touchdowns. When Ware signed with the CFL's Ottawa Rough Riders in 1995, his former coach at Houston, Jack Pardee, said, "Andre is going to be great in this league." Wrong. Ware's short, three-team CFL career ended in 1997, when he had the honor of watching from the bench as Doug Flutie led the Toronto Argonauts to a Grey Cup victory.

In three years at Houston, Ware threw for 8,202 yards and 75 touchdowns.

Was he the real deal????????

this was just a glorified ride rivers jock post...the real point is college players are not the same as pro players, especially at QB just take a look at the drafts:

Kyle Boller - 1st round

Tom Brady - 199th overall

Tim Couch - 1st overall

Ryan Leaf - 2nd overall

Matt Hasselbeck - 187th overall

Mark Brunell - 118th overall

Trent Green - 222nd overall

oh and by the way, Ben Roethlisberger was drafted 7 spots after Rivers...i see he's still on the bench even thought his starter was having a great year.

Jason Campbell has a great arm. You would take him over rivers? Rivers didnt even start a game. And he was outperformed by Cleo lemon rivers backup.

Not defending dccat but Cambell is known for being a much better short yardage passer than throwing it down the field. A lot of people say that throwing down field is cambells biggest weakness.
