  1. Felix Grant on the music side - mainstay for jazz fans in the District for nearly 50 years. The video I posted in the OP would play right before his program started. According to his Wikipedia page, he even received a civilian award from the government of Brazil for introducing American audiences to Bossa Nova music.
  2. If your team is winning, playing at a run down venue is always the way to go. RFK Stadium is hideous, run down, and was the first of the unfortunate trend of cookie cutter stadiums. But by all accounts it had one of the best home-field advantages in the NFL because of (not in spite of) its flaws (i.e. the bouncing bleachers). When you're winning, a place doesn't even have flaws - they have "quirks."
  3. That's some unnecessary levels of bitterness there. If he'd been nasty or rude to his teammates or the fanbase, that'd be one thing. But I haven't heard anything of that sort about him from his time in D.C. He did his best for a mediocre franchise and went on to a team with better prospects - a team that was a game away from going to a Super Bowl last year. He wasn't a world beater here but maybe he'll thrive in Minnesota and if he does, then good on him.
  4. "These are not passive hockey fans."
  5. Hey I know the "Wizards" nickname is still not popular but it fits! I mean look at the way they made that lead disappear!
  6. Yeah, I'm a "NICE GUY (TM)" in recovery (basically an Incel-Lite) but I never went all the way to "the dark side" in large part because I had a solid foundation of emotionally available men (especially my father) and influential women (like my mom and grandma). By about my sophomore year of high school, most of my friends were women and it's been that way ever since. I cannot begin to tell you how much I appreciate them because guys like him and Elliot Rodgers could have been me.
  7. http://alexanderlozada.com/iasip/?IlRydW1wIFNhYm90YWdlcyB0aGUgS29yZWFuIFBlYWNlIE5lZ290aWF0aW9ucyI= Just gonna put this here for when - not if - it happens.
  8. Oh...oh my gawd, I have a new favorite thing.
  9. The surprise over the whole "Incel" thing is kind of a reminder that a lot of internet culture is still pretty niche and underground. I remember when these guys were relegated to the /r9k/ forum on 4chan for being too pathetic for the rest of 4chan (which is really saying something) - same as how /pol/ was made to keep the overly fascist bunch in a containment area. And they are connected. These incels are basically the gender relations and sexuality wing of the latest fascist movement. If you look at the Points of "Ur-Fascism" it's chilling how many points they check off: http://www.openculture.com/2016/11/umberto-eco-makes-a-list-of-the-14-common-features-of-fascism.html Bolded a couple point for emphasis but you get the point. These guys (and their ilk) have created a false narrative about a natural social order where women's bodies are the property of men to be used at-will. But that natural order has been disturbed by interlopers - namely, those who do not conform to the status quo and their cohorts (members of the LGBTQIA+ community, feminists, most interracial couples, "SJWs," etc.) while also holding this bizarre love/hate relationship with individuals who do fit into the status quo and are, in their eyes, more successful . They believe they've been driven East of Eden by said interlopers and they want to punish them - because God knows that ways easier to do than some self-evaluation. It's no wonder they're part of the "Alt-Right's" orbit.
  10. I'm Episcopalian so on one hand, I couldn't be more put off by the current administration and its impact on the culture at large - especially my faith. On the other hand, I think it's caused the church to take firmer stances on issues like mass incarceration and income inequality so I'm not going to say no to that. I just hope they don't take their foot off the pedal when the eventual blue wave crests.
  11. After doing a little extra research recently, I have to say that I wouldn't mind if the party went back to its roots - which included the likes of Horace Greeley and European ex-pats/veterans of the 1848 Revolutions. https://isreview.org/issue/79/reading-karl-marx-abraham-lincoln From President Lincoln's first State of the Union. There's a lot more about the radical and left-leaning origins of the Republican Party in the link above. This also caught my eye: https://www.marxists.org/archive/marx/iwma/documents/1864/lincoln-letter.htm The International Workingmen's Association's Letter to President Lincoln after his 1864 reelection. The First IWA/Internationale was led by Dr. Karl Marx. My oh my, I had no idea just how appropriate the color red was for the GOP. You all might make a Republican out of me yet!
  12. One of my favorite bloggers/authors/Twitter ragamuffins Jon Bois weighed in on this not too long ago:
  13. If true, good on DG for standing up to Snyder. After giving an organization 20 years of your life, with the back-end of it mired in incompetency and controversy, you don't owe them anything - especially being trotted out like a show horse. DG was my favorite player growing up. If this is true, this further solidifies his place in my personal HoF.
  14. 1.) Ha! Well, I did get my hair trimmed a few months back because I couldn't handle the tangles and I didn't want to spend money on product (picking that out every morning alone added an extra 5-10 minutes to my morning routine) 2.) Metro is easy to get around and I sill love using it when I visit but my folks still living there and using it to commute have been...not so happy with it lately: delays, ongoing infrastructure work, derailments/fires, more delays, etc. They certainly remember when it opened back in '76 and they've made it clear that Metro has seen better days. Also, has there been any new action on that light rail/Purple Line project in the Maryland Suburbs?
  15. I...I don't even know where to start with this.
  16. Holy **** this is hilarious. How ridiculous must this team look to folks who have no emotional or financial connection to this team?
  17. After doing some stat research for a thread, I was reminded just how good John Riggins was deep into his career. Led the league in rushing touchdowns in '83 and '84, nearly average 4 yards/carry after the team's big Super Bowl season in '82, and if he wasn't so banged up his last season, he could bowed out with three consecutive 1,000 yard seasons. All that for a fullback. One of the reasons why I like digging into the archives. You know these guys are legends but you forget just how good they were - and that's just the "on paper" stuff.
  18. This one's still relevant (1 John 4:8)
  19. I just don't want this team to look hilariously dated when we look back on it in 20 years. I'm not saying we need to revive an old uniform but isn't it best to shoot for something that's going to stand the test of time?
  20. Wanted to touch base and see if anyone's answered "in life after love?"
  21. I really do wish him the best. And yeah, 'Skins are in desperate need of a new stadium. I've got a feeling it's going to go the way of old Foxboro where not even the fans will miss it. There's so much bad juju associated with that place and I don't even think winning can clear it away. As long as the new place is: -Metro accessible -Doesn't saddle taxpayers with a heavy burden -Has affordable "cheap seats" with clear sight lines Then I'll be alright with whatever they do Would prefer it be an outdoor stadium (you'd think the cold would be an advantage for northeastern teams) but if it must be a dome, I won't kick up a fuss.
  22. Agreed, though I'm a big fan of minimalism and simplicity when it comes to uniforms. Apart from having a winning tradition associated with them (i.e. the Yankees pinstripes, the Packers "G" logo, etc..) I think simplicity is the biggest factor for a timeless uniform design. What else do you really need? Apart from adding names to the back of the uniforms (I don't think that became a thing until the Allen years) - this is pretty much as good as it gets as far as the 'Skins are concerned. Understated logo on the helmets, clear white numbers contrasted against dark burgundy jerseys, and muted, gold trousers. When you keep it simple, you're more likely to strike gold. That's not to say minimalism can't be ugly or "busier" designs can't look good.
  23. The 2002 throwback (in the style of the mid-1960s teams) unis had a much more toned down shade of gold than the "Ronald McDonald" uniforms of the Lombardi/Austin/Allen/Pardee years (which we're using today) and I'm pretty sure that was the shade they used up until the late 1960s. If memory serves, they sort of "brightened" the tones up to look more like the Packers to pay homage to Lombardi. If it were up to me, these would be the team's full-time uniforms. I know they're associated with losing teams (both in the 1960s and in 2002) it's just a great design.
