2024 NFL Draft Position/Tracker - Final Pick #2
method man replied to zCommander's topic in The Stadium
I feel tackles are more likely to hit the ground running than guards on average. Look at the PFF grades of all the interior linemen taken in rd 2 - Torrence, Avila, Mauch and Tippmann have not been particularly good. Same thing applies to MLBs, especially green dot MLBs - it takes time for these guys to get acclimated to the NFL and you are not going to get a guy who is ready to hit the ground running off the bat more likely than not. LG and green dot MLB are definitely two positions I'd rather target in FA. As of now, I'm with most here where if we pick top 6, I'd lean Harrison or Bowers if either guy is there. I would then package both those 2nds to move back into the mid 1st to grab a tackle. -
This is one of the many reasons I want Ben Johnson. He has a reputation of thinking "he knows nothing" and takes a lot of feedback from those around him. Read about his working relationship with Goff. What's interesting about BJ is that he has played under a lot of coaches and, as a result, scene a lot of different schemes. McVay has been in some version of the WCO his entire career

I would argue a truly elite WR is worth more than a truly elite tackle. The pay reflects that

Nope and he is going to be humbled by the offers he receives. This is a loaded safety market, especially for box safeties/nickel types. He is competing with Dugger, Chinn among others. Separately, his value to this D is his versatility. The next DC may not need someone like him

And now Wirfs has moved to LT and is a stud playing there. Gave up his first sack of the season to Chase yday only after hurting his ankle in the game and continuing to play through it I haven’t really studied Fashanu yet but I remember folks posting initial takes from scouts on him a month or two ago and they felt the same way. Saw Russell Okung as a comp - a guy who may make a few Pro Bowls but is not going to be elite
-
Unlike the Snyder era where he got cheap on cash salaries to pay annually, I get the sense Harris will want to be aggressive in FA and play the same games with the cap Philly, NO and others play. All this means is I expect fewer position needs going into the draft and that also means we can be aggressive there as well going quality over quantity if we choose to do so
-
The Niners calculus was that if he leaves, they will just recoup a comp pick in 2025. The effective cost to them vs delaying the pick a year and maybe losing a round or two on it
-
I would be willing to move a RT to LT if a new staff thinks that player is cut out for it. Trent was a RT in college. I would absolutely be willing to trade back into rd 1 if there is a second tackle there who they think can be a year 1 guard (although the issue with that strategy is tackles tend to be taller and we ideally need shorter guards for Sam)

Have you forgotten that BSJ, at his size, can also man the slot? Do you realize that makes us one of the few teams that has an answer for big slot receivers like Kupp. What BSJ needs is to jam more at the LOS given his size and play with more confidence. The only thing he lacks is great deep speed - he is 6-3, long, has elite quickness at that size and is a smart player who studies his ass off. He is already starting caliber corner where he’s at with the potential to get to another level. I’m excited to see what he can do in a new scheme with better coaching He is a top extension candidate for me this offseason.

Got it. So you would’ve made Montez the highest paid player on the team and looked to keep around a guy whose knee is in such bad shape that no team was willing to beat SF’s offer on for what was effectively a 4th

Isn’t the core issue with London that he did his best work in the slot coming out of USC and that ATL had playing as an outside receiver mostly? Pitts had a 1000 yard season as a rookie (becoming the only guy to do so as a TE besides Ditka). Since then, he has had Mariota and Ridder as his QBs. the guy had his 2nd best game of the season in the one game someone halfway competent like Heinicke started. Even this year, he is on pace for a 700 yard season The one thing that he has gotten out of playing in ATL is that he has become a better blocker, not good but competent
-
Paging @Conn London, Pitts and Bijan have all underachieved relative to draft slot. Think that is them or coaching? Smith has admitted stupidly to using some of these guys as decoys for Allgeier, Hollins, Smith, etc

I don’t think PFF always does the best job grading players in the secondary because they don’t always understand coverage responsibilities. I think ultimately both guys are #2 corners but BSJ shows a bit more ability to cover #1 receivers, which he did more of last season. Fuller is the smarter player, plays with better technique and has more experience. BSJ is the more physically talented of the two by quite a bit. Ultimately, our best hope is that Forbes shows some #1 corner ability so that we are not forced to give an older guy like Fuller a long term deal
