Your favorite "Superband"

With all the music talk lately, I've been wondering about this. And by Superband I mean members of 2 or more bands getting together and making a new band. So who are your favorites? I have 2. Mad Season and Down. If there are any Alice in Chains fans out there I highly recommend picking up Mad Season. Good gear. And you metal fans would love some Down.

Mad Season is a great one for sure.

Audioslave ruined 2 of my favorite bands.

Temple of the Dog was pretty good for a CD.

Who is the second group in Down? I am a fan of Pantera for sure..but I didnt know there was another group involved.

Temple of the Dog was fantastic. There were actually 3 bands in Down. Phil and Rex from Pantera. Pepper Keenan from CoC. And the other guys are from Crowbar I believe. And I liked Audioslave's first album. Second one blew. But Rage did get back together and play some shows so maybe a new CD is in the works.

I didnt know that about Crobar and CoC. Thats cool as hell!!

I couldnt stand Audioslave once they came out. In my opinion the rage in RATM was Zakk hands down. Then in Audioslave Tom is trying to be all political and such and it just felt like it made Chris Cornell dirty somehow. I also never understood why Soundgarden broke up to begin with.

Well, this'll be out of place with all the metal and grunge, but Travellin' Wilburys made some very catchy music.

I didn't care for the Firm,, too much of the worst kind of 80s in them and not enough Jimmy Page influence... Power Station was OK.

Now, there have been some excellent Blues super groups,, I can recommend the Jimmy Rodgers All Stars (not much a supergroup, but tons of guests on the album, from Robert Plant to Mick Jagger, and it's a good one.)

But my favorite is this one

1970, Howlin' Wolf, Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts.

I couldn't recommend anything more.

What exactly is the definition of superband? I am only asking this because I never viewed DOWN as a Superband. I have always loved them and COC. Yeah, they have Phil and Rex. They are definitely two heavy hitters that people outside metal "might" know. I think this is the same as saying the original Six Feet Under were a Superband.

However, even though I am a COC fan, who really knows who the hell Pepper Keenan is? Also, most people have never heard of Kirk or Bower. Shoot, most people have never heard of COC, Crowbar, or Eyehategod.

Now, the Travellin Wilburys was definitely a supergroup. I mean who hasn't heard of George Harrison, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, and Bob Dylan. The only outcast in that group was Jeff Lyne. I would have never heard of him if it wasn't for that band.

Not everyone's cup of tea but.......Fantômas.

Vocals - Mike Patton (Mr. Bungle, Faith No More, Peeping Tom)

Guitar - Buzz Osbourne (The Melvins)

Bass - Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle)

Drums - Dave Lombardo (Slayer)

They also toured with Terry Bozzio on drums in '05 when Dave was touring with Slayer.

I don't know if this exactly qualifies but Black Sabbath (Heaven and Hell as they are referred to now) after Ozzy was bad ass. Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler from Sabbath stayed and Ronnie Dio put down some sick vocals (his range is not recognized enough). Topping it off on drums was Vinny Appice who can still throw down to this very day. It's too bad the group couldn't get along in thier first iteration, only releasing Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules, and the rushed Live Evil. They got back together around 1992 for Dehuminizer which was not well recieved but I like it.

Last year Heaven and Hell relesed a double live CD from Radio City Music Hall. The solo from Vinny Appice was great and everyone was on point. This came after the Black Sabbath: the Dio years collection was released. The band recorded three new tracks for the album which IMHO stand up to the rest of thier material.

Good news for any who may be interested: Geezer Butler and Ronnie Dio have both stated that Heaven and Hell will be recording a brand new album this year, which is intended to be released by the end of 2008. If the three new tracks are any indication it should be excellent.

I've always enjoyed all versions of Black Sabbath, as they were one of the primary bands I listened to with my dad growing up. We had the priviledge of seeing Heaven and Hell last September and trust me they may look a little old, but they still rock hard.

The reason I decided to mention this is because Sabbath is generally only recognized for thier work with Ozzy, and Dio has had a few great albums himself.

Mad Season is RE-DONK-U-LOUS!!! Above is one of my favorites. The first track, Wake up, is sick. Above is the only thing they put out unfortunately. I have them live at the Moore on DVD and it's great but no Wake up but still great. Also like the SAP EP from AIC which kinda qualifies if you count "Right Turn" because it has Chris Cornell and it's insane. Honorable mention is Porno for Pyros when Flea played bass for them on their 1996 CD.

RIP Layne.

Audioslave just reminded me there was no more RATM or Soundgarden.

damageplan.

If your a fan of pantera, check them out.

Dimes guitar sound was awesome on that album as were some of his solos. But there were some really cheesy riffs. Also, the Abotts sound just didn't fit well with Pat Lachman's voice. I think he needs to sing for more of an AIC style band. I also thought the song structures and drums on that album were boring.

Honestly, if it wasn't for Dime, I would have never bought that album.

I think they missed Phil's influence on song structure on that album. That is one thing that he was really good at (well besides the singing thing). He is just one of the best at visualising a song and making it flow in a totally spontatneous way.

  • 3 months later...

I've got to go older, and throw another vote to the Traveling Wilburys. I mean come on, how can you beat a lineup of George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Roy Orbison? There was a 5th guy named Jeff Lynne, who was part of the Electric Light Orchestra, but he's the only one I've never heard of. I believe, though I'm not certain, that Eric Clapton played with them occasionally as well.

That is a supergroup.
