Mouse Thrown Into Fire Sets Home Ablaze

FORT SUMNER, N.M. - A mouse got its revenge against a homeowner who tried to dispose of it in a pile of burning leaves. The blazing creature ran back to the man's house and set it on fire.

Luciano Mares, 81, of Fort Sumner said he caught the mouse inside his house and wanted to get rid of it.

"I had some leaves burning outside, so I threw it in the fire, and the mouse was on fire and ran back at the house," Mares said from a motel room Saturday.

Village Fire Chief Juan Chavez said the burning mouse ran to just beneath a window, and the flames spread up from there and throughout the house.

No was hurt inside, but the home and everything in it was destroyed.

Unseasonably dry and windy conditions have charred more than 53,000 acres and destroyed 10 homes in southeastern New Mexico in recent weeks.

"I've seen numerous house fires," village Fire Department Capt. Jim Lyssy said, "but nothing as unique as this one."

I always do that when I have a mouse problem.

I begin by stalking the mouse... learning its habits, where it lurks, where it hides. Then I set up a mouse-blind in my living room and wait for the mouse to appear, where I pounce on the mouse and catch it with my bare hands.

Band-aids at the ready to heal the numerous mouse bite wounds, undaunted, I proceed out the front door with my prize. Having started a brush fire earlier in the day, I am please to learn that my mouse calculations are exact. The fire is peaking as I hold my prize.

The mouse, squealing and biting in a fit of rage, is no match for my grip. I then throw the mouse onto the fire and take pleasure in watching it swallowed by the raging brush fire, burning to a crisp.

Seriously, mouse traps are for fools... this way is much better.

...never thought about it that way...and here I was thinking the guy could have saved himself a lot of trouble by buying the 99 cent traps they sell at Home Depot. What a dumbass I am...

Sounds like a fish story to me.

I don't believe a mouse would burn long enough to be able to run back to the house and set it on fire.

Where was the brush fire, on the front porch?

More likely, the old man or a relative he's covering for decided to but some kind of flamable liquid on the little feller and set him on fire for kicks. Then came up with bull**** story to tell the insurance people.

I don't buy it.

I heard a story once of a cat with a big fluffy tail having it catch fire getting to close to the stove while a woman was cooking. The cat took off behind a couch, and got it burning, but the woman was able to extinguish the couch and cat.

Don't know if it's true or not.

Yea, I'm with you Ax, definately BS. This guy probably did something really stupid and blamed it on a this far fetched story. He probably just got through watching Back to the Future or something, and blamed it on a mouse.

It depends. The guy might have poured something on the animal and set it on fire. That would have burned for a good while longer then fur.

If the story does turn out to be true, he deserves what he got.

Looks like you doubters were correct:

Flaming Mouse Story Found To Be False

FORT SUMNER, N.M. -- A small -town rumor that sparked world -wide interest about a mouse burning down a house has been found to be untrue.

After 81-year-old Chano Mares's house burned down Saturday in Fort Sumner, news services picked up the quirky story.

"Flaming Mouse Burns Down House" read the headline over an Associated Press story that appeared on WSBTV.com, for example.

According to the initial report, Mares threw the critter in a pile of burning leaves near his home, but it ran back to the house on fire.

A local firefighter said the mouse ran to just beneath a window and the flames spread up the window and throughout the house.

All contents of the home were destroyed, but no one was injured.

Interest in fires has been high lately. Unseasonably dry and windy conditions have charred more than 53,000 acres and destroyed 10 homes in southeastern New Mexico in recent weeks.

The mouse story, however, has been doused by Mares.

"It's really humorous more than anything that a mouse burned down the house," he told KOAT-TV in Albuquerque. The mouse was dead when it hit the burning leaves.

Mares said he trapped and killed the critter and tossed it on the fire.

The flames, he said, probably reached his house because they were driven by high winds.

Capt. Jim Lyssy of the Fort Sumner Fire Department said the rumor probably got started because there was "a little too much excitement" at the time of the fire.

Mares lost everything -- and has no insurance -- but the mouse story still makes him smile.

"I started laughing, and I'll be laughing from now on," he said. "It's silly."
