KevinthePRF
Weren't we supposed to have a horrible defense this past season due to our neglect of the DL? Now we lose Smoot and Pierce and we're suppose to suck again? We had guys step up last year in the absence of Arrington and Bowen. I think all those venting forgot it starts with coaching, I thought that's what most of us preached dating back to the Turner years.
Califan007 The Constipated
If Arrington can be replaced, Smoot can be replaced...If Ryan Clark can come in undrafted and fill in beautifully for Bowen, then the same can happen for Pierce... I'm not depressed by any stretch...although I do wish we could have kept both. Such is life...
GangstaSkinz
Williams, as far as I can remember, has never coached a bad defense. The man knows what he is doing and knows the players better than I could imagine.
Fifty Gut
Smoot was replaced. Last game of the season and Walt Harris along with UDFAs and rookies took on one of the best passing offenses in the league and won.

These are all very talented players that are going to make this defense stronger.
Buck812
I hope (and pray) that yall are right. I do know that our defense was centered around the play of our CBs last year so we will probably see some shift in philosophy. It seems that if we would have had to go for an extended period of time last year without Smoot that teams would have figured out ways to take advantage of it. Darth Tater
We let Smoot go with a $10.8M SB on a six year contract. Unless the pay-out structure was really bad, we were outbid here because Smoot's value was less to us than to Minnesota not because of cap issues. Smoot must have gone with Williams' blessings. bobzmuda
It's more like "In Gibbs I don't Trust." Gibbs valued having Moss over the ability to keep Pierce and/or Smoot simply because he wasn't able to generate sufficient offense last year. Fred Jones
Young players are going to have to step up and take up the slack. We need a new MLB and starting corner from among the players that we have. I have confidence in Williams, but I also have confidence the players will step up and perform.

Another example of high-quality posting that this board is . That is what some call sarcasm. I'll give you another chance to post something substantive and address my point. OR you could just call me another name and make yourself look like a Gibbs apologist with no capacity to think critically. POINT V V V V V How does Gibss making this move NOT look like him admitting he needs as much help on offense as he can get while cannibalizing the defense? Therefore, he doesn't trust his own abilities, and as he would say "In Gibbs I don't trust" ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ POINT
luckydevil
It is pretty clear to me that many on this board overvalue Smoot's ability. I was far more upset about losing Pierce.
seanyt
Coach Williams will have no problem plugging in a new corner into his system.

Just look at the game against the Vikings when he had Springs only part of the time and no Smoot. Those guys did a great job. Hopefully Gibbs will figure it out this off-season. Superimposing your own opinion on our coach does not serve you well my fare weather friend. Your point in trying to make a statement with the intent to support your proof for a negative (How does Gibss making this move NOT look like…) strikes indeed as a non sequitur. No to mention your premise of “Gibbs valued having Moss over the ability to keep Pierce and/or Smoot simply because he wasn't able to generate sufficient offense last year” is based upon what knowledge…oh, sorry… it’s subjective isn’t it? All better now?

Of course, Skins fans tend to do that with most players. I've never understood it. I'm never going to like the trash talking, the dancing after players, etc. Give me a blue collar player that puts his bucket on... does his job... and goes back to the huddle for the next play. But it doesn't surprise me that people like the Smoot's of the world... even Deion Sanders - before and after God - had a legion of followers. I think people loved him for this quote "Don't call me the next Dieon Sanders. Call me the first Fred Smoot" I'll be honest I loved that, I loved that brash swagger and thought we needed it. He was a pretty solid player but isn't irreplaceable

Admittedly. You just don't pay solid players $14M bonuses The snazzy quotes... all show. And I couldn't care less.
