Redskins, Patten Agree to Terms

By Gary Fitzgerald

March 3, 2005

Another three-time Super Bowl champion has joined the Redskins.

Free agent wide receiver David Patten has agreed to terms on a contract with the Redskins, the team announced on Thursday evening. Patten, who has helped the New England Patriots in three of the last four Super Bowls, is an experienced and productive receiver who has the speed and work ethic to bolster the team's receiving corps.

Patten, 5-10 and 190 pounds, is an eight-year NFL veteran, starting 58-of-112 games with 236 catches for 3,519 yards and 20 touchdowns. He played four seasons in New England (2001-04), one in Cleveland (2000) and his first three seasons in the NFL with the New York Giants (1997-99).

Patten has played the best football of his career with the Patriots, appearing in 58 games with 44 starts and catching 165 passes for 2,513 yards and 15 touchdowns during his tenure in New England.

In 2004, Patten caught 44 passes for 800 yards and a career-high seven touchdowns. His 18.2 yards-per-catch average was also a career high.

In 2003, Patten appeared in six games with five starts before landing on injured reserve. In 2002, he led all Patriots receivers with five touchdown receptions and set career-highs in receptions (61) and receiving yards (824).

In 2001, Patten became the first player in franchise history and only the sixth player in the NFL since 1960 to record a touchdown pass, touchdown reception and rush for a touchdown in one game (at Indianapolis). During that game, he was also on the receiving end of the longest play from scrimmage in Patriots history when he caught a 91-yard pass from quarterback Tom Brady.

Prior to signing with the Patriots, Patten spent the 2000 season with the Cleveland Browns and was with the New York Giants from 1997-1999. During his career, he has also excelled as a kickoff return specialist with 109 returns for 2,253 yards.

A four-year letterman at Western Carolina, Patten finished his career tied for ninth on the school's career touchdown pass reception list with 14. During his senior year, he ranked among the nation's top-10 receivers with 59 catches for 881 yards and received All-Southern Conference honors. Following his collegiate career in 1996, he played for the Albany Firebirds of the AFL.

Patten is likely the first of several acquisitions to the wide receiver position this offseason. Both of last season's starters, Rod Gardner and Laveranues Coles, headed into the offseason with a some uncertainty as to whether they would return to Washington.

The team has given Gardner permission to seek a trade and Head coach Joe Gibbs has said that Coles may also be on the trading block, although it's possible that Coles will remain a Redskin next season.

Patten is a solid veteran who will allow us to utilize Thrash on teams without having to go to him as a third receiver as often. If we add another receiver, and move Coles for someone adequate like Moss (or keep Coles) we have a pretty interesting batch of receivers.

Context. Let's wait and see how we handle the WR position as a whole this offseason and then we can determine how Patten fits in.

Also, let's wait and see what the contract is. Unless we seriously overpaid, it can't be bad.

You guys are nuts. Patten is a great pickup. If he can put those #'s up as a #4 Ill take him on my team any day.

Hes comfortably a #2, most certainly. Not a #1 though. He is a great pickup nonetheless.

Save the ****ing for when we see the terms of the contract. If we got him for as cheap as we SHOULD have gotten him, its an awesome move.

Less big name FA's and more proven, talented, winning players. Id take a guy with less potential and more heart for less cash any day over some bum big name douchebag who doesnt give 2 ****s about the team.

BTW this is up on Redskins.com now.

Derrick Mason is 31 years old and 5'11 and he just got over 20 million. Patten is a good replacement for Gardner, even though I suspect if things go as planned Jacobs will be our #2, and Patten our #3. I would not get rid of Coles unless will can bring in a guy like Boldin to replace him or if we are absolutely sure we're going to get Williams in the draft. But definitely not Coles for Moss.

EXACTLY, Patten, Givens, Branch and Brown are all 6'0" and under, and they don't seem to be hurting with their 3 Super Bowl Rings. Jesus people is there anything you don't ***** about. Usually we get criticized for making a splash, and now we criticize ourselves for doing it "The Patriots Way" by signing role players.

Seems like a good move to me. I'll take substance over style anyday. He absolutely positively CANNOT be worse than 50/50.

If he's like they say, a team guy, not afraid or unable to block like LC (aka Little Crybaby) and 50/50, runs good routes, and is a solid citizen, then it's a no brainer.

We'll see.

Come September, we'll have a group of guys who want to be here.

To the returning players, I'll say welcome back.

To the new guys, I'll say welcome aboard.

To anyone who doesn't want to be here, I'll say fuggoff.

I did some research.

Gary Clark: 5-9, 180

Art Monk: 6-3, 210

Ricky Sanders: Probably under 6-0, under 200 (couldn't find info)

Clark was awesome for the Skins, but he had the big Monk to complement him. With all the sub-six footers on the team, someone like McCants can be the Monk for Gibbs. Mike Williams is 6-4 and would really open up the offense.

If the Skins sign a free agent CB (Smoot or Rolle) and Williams is still there at #9, there is not a defensive player on the board worth the pick. Williams would fill a need position especially if Coles is dealt. Derrick Johnson will probably get taken before the Skins and Rolle and Pac-Man will not get picked if the SKins have already secured a FA CB. The DE and DT talent will still be there if you trade back.

The Laveranues Coles-for-Santana Moss trade has been jump-started ... again.

FOXSports.com has learned that the Jets have continued to keep a dialogue open with Coles and the team is scheduled to talk to Coles' agent Thursday regarding terms that could make the trade work.

If the Jets and Coles can come to terms on a new contract that both sides view as mutually beneficial, the Jets will make the deal. Redskins sources also said they were keeping hope alive that a deal would get done in the end.

"Yesterday there was a five percent chance of this getting done," said one source close to the situation. "Now I really think it's 50-50. We'll see how talks go (Thursday)."

Both Coles and now Moss are desperate to get this deal done. Otherwise, the Redskins will retain a player who clearly does not want to be on their team. The Jets will have a player who, like Coles, has become disappointed with his status on a club. It's expected that like Coles, Moss would also covet a new deal.

Moss and Coles have actually talked about their swapping of locales. Coles has not only told the Redskins his feelings, he was even at the Pro Bowl as a guest of Jets star DE John Abraham and has a great working relationship with QB Chad Pennington.

Several people inside the league said Wednesday they caught wind that talks had started again as Coles may be softening on his stance. The Jets are encouraged enough to give it one last try.

According to George Michael, he's the replacement for Rod Gardner.

Hearing this quote from a Patriot fan, makes him sound like the perfect replacement.

Major knock on him from my perspective is that he'll make the difficult grab, but drops the easier ones at times.
