What's your most memorable Darrell Green's moment in NFL?

Recommended Posts

So many to mention but the one i always think about and that gets me hyped is

playoff game vs the bears at soldier field in chicago. Green is in as the punt returner, bears punt, green catches the ball, leaps over an opponent while twisting his ribs at the same time, jukes and returns it for a TD.

This quieted the fans and it was game over baby. what an impact player green was.

His last kick return.

Champ hands Darrell the ball on a reverse and he gets a great return. For a second there I thought he was going to take it all the way.

It was such a great way to show the old man still had it.

The playoff game against the Bears in Soldier field (I think 86/87 season). He returned a punt for a TD, hurdling over a Bear in route to the endzone, pulling his chest/side muscle. He was running down the field holding his side. That is my most memorable.

The punt return has to be tops...came at such a crucial moment in the game.

Close behind though are the chase down of Tony dorsett on MNF and batting down the pass at the goal line against the Vikings in the NFC Championship game.

Unfortunately I am too young to have seen all his great highlights from the 80's in which every game ended up mattering. I have seen most on highlight reels, but the emotion is just not the same.

In MY ERA of the Darrell Green years, my favorite memory either had to be that last kick return(purely emotional) or The Interception in overtime against Detroit returned for a TD as he is carried in from like the 2 yard line by a D-lineman. It was hilarious.

Interception against the Lions in Overtime, that was my first true Redskins memory. I remember I lived in Jackson, Mississippi and was getting a Saints game I think, can't really remember..and them showing the highlights of the game as the first game of the Sunday doubleheader ended and then them showing a live feed of the game for just a little bit and then switching to the 3pm game and then having a game break to show the interception by Green! I was so happy when I saw that!

Although its a common belief, I swear Darrell Green never actually batted that ball away. It simply bounced off of Darren Nelson's shoulder pad. Green had blanket coverage on the play...but he never (from the NFL Films angle) tipped the ball.

That play was actually against the Rams. It was a pass in the right flat to Eric Dickerson but the ball bounced off his shoulder pad and Darrell snagged it and pretty much trotted to the end zone. Skins won 51-7.

I still remember him running down Tony Dorsett in RFK. I was lucky enough to attend that game and the entire stadium was amazed when Green caught him from behind.

Another game at RFK that showed Darrell's speed was a game against the Rams. Ron Brown, a world class sprinter in his own right, ran a kickoff back and Darrell caught him from behind. Unfortunately he didn't catch him until he was at the one yard line and Darrell tackled him in the end zone. A TD, but barely.

I'm glad I read before I posted KT, cuz that was my pick. It was just so inclusive of everything DG was about...

I was watching it at the time on a big-screen in a Reno lounge off the casino while on vacation...and was at a table of 4 guys backing the Bears (two of them from Chi)...and they just held their drinks up to me and toasted DG (after some colorful explectives lol)...

IMO there's a small handfull of names universally respected as both players and people...and DG is def one of them.

the chase down of Tony Dorsett on MNF at RFK

rejecting the pass at the goal line (4th down) no time left on the clock against the Vikings in the NFC Championship game, Skins move on to the Super Bowl and win

Both priceless............................

There's too many to pick one,, obviously the punt return vs the Bears.. he did pick one off vs the Rams in the playoffs, and the one vs the Lions everyone is talking about was in the regular season, the game in which Gibbs called Jeff Rutledge up the middle on a QB draw to tie the game if I remember right... a lineman basically carried darrel over the goal line.

I never ever like the plays of him running down Dorsett or dickerson. Call me crazy but when I see those plays, it doesn't escape my notice that all ten of the other guys on the defense royally screwed up.

I remember a play vs the Oilers in 91 when we still had our perfect record intact,, NOTHING was going right for us in the second half, and the Oilers tied the game and sent it to OT.. We couldn't stop them at all in the 4th quarter, and on the first possession of OT, Green INT'd Warren Moon at their 20 and set up the easy chip shot game winner.

But #1 has to be the punt return.

I am going to go with a really obscure fact / moment(s). In 1996 I truly enjoyed watching Darrell hold Michael Irvin to

1 reception for 5 yards in week 14

1 reception for 7 yards in week 17

exactly one year after their Super Bowl victory.

The week 17 matchup was great because you had all of these shots of Darrell running around at halftime greeting numerous former teammates that he had outlasted in the final game at RFK.

I agree

But I have a fond memory of him running down Dorsett and Dickerson from behind
