A candidate in a high-stakes legislative contest in Virginia had sex with her husband in live videos posted on a pornographic website and asked viewers to pay them money in return for carrying out specific sex acts.

 

Screenshots of Susanna Gibson on the website were shared with The Associated Press. The campaign for Gibson, a Democrat running for a seat in the Virginia House of Delegates in a district just outside Richmond, issued a statement Monday in which it denounced the sharing of the videos as a violation of the law and her privacy. Gibson called the exposure of the videos "the worst gutter politics."

but. If you have aspirations to be in the public life, it’s incredibly stupid to be a webcam chick performing sex acts for money.

I’m not really sure how that works on VA law as a crime. She willfully did these things, online, in an open way. Someone just recorded it. 
 

This wasn’t something she sent to a boyfriend, they broke up, and then he released it. She wasn’t hacked. I don’t know the law well enough but I’m not sure what your rights are when you do something publicly, and people find out.

The idea of performing sex acts for money, on video, in public, being an issue for someone who wants to be a leader of a community, isn’t exactly an “insane puritanical viewpoint”

 

The in public makes her an idiot and the whole thing laughable. But the article I got that from may be wrong. But even if it wasn’t in public, it’s insanely dumb.

It was allegedly on a subscription site (chaturbate). And the tips part allegedly violated the sites tos, which is why the videos were removed. 

 

And I agree it was dumb to think it would never come back to haunt her. But I also think us Americans are prudes when it comes to nudity and sex.

I don’t think having a problem with “performing sex acts for money” is why though. I think it’s totally reasonable to have a problem with that. 
 

i also imagine we’ll see more of this in the future as people make terrible decisions in their early adult years and it comes back to haunt them.

Hmmmm. It’s possible the article I read was wrong. There’s a lot of suspicious looking articles out there about this

as a side note - if you watched this develop this morning, you got a little glimpse of political operatives and how they work in its online bot/troll farms 

 

i bet some people at twitter, Reddit, and her had a fun morning tracking things down and submitting them to be removed etc.

@The Evil Geniussays it was subscription site. And I just posted a response. So I wouldn’t take the “passwordless” part as true unless we see that in some additional articles from reputable sites. 
 

but to your actual point, im not really sure how all that is working. It seems to me certain sites that are popular don’t want to risk running afoul of the law, and implemented something, and for everyone else nothings changed. 
 

and I don’t see how VA had the resources (time or money) to do anything about it. But that’s just a guess.

Her race was considered a tossup before all of this came out. She entered the race because of Roe. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out. She can play this to her advantage, but how will her district respond?

And while reducing the abortion restriction from 26 weeks to 15 weeks may not play well here, it seems to have significantly less pushback in the state. 
 

im not saying it’s popular or will pass, just that it doesn’t receive as much pushback as people here (probably) think it deserves

 

being an NP is incredibly hard. The time and money required just to get the degree is one thing. But they fight to gain traction in a community because they “are not a doctor.”  
 

it’s very dependent on community reputation which takes a while to build. 
 

it’s possible she killed two careers with one stone on this one. 

It’s also possible she wins election. Who the hell knows how this will play out.

All the legality stuff aside, I think it is perfectly reasonable to question her decision making skills based on this.  And wanting good decision making in a candidate isn't a high bar (for Dems, I checked the party before saying decision making skills was a requirement).
