Hello Friends,

...

The annual springtime celebration of golf is upon us this week.

h13.jpg

So, who are you going to lay a little money on?

Once again as only the Masters can do, young and old contrasts are as sharp as they are subtle.

The new pack of young players leading the world's top 10 rankings of Jordan Spieth, Rory Mcilroy and Rickie Fowler seem to be the hype makers once again. But as Augusta has shown us time and again, the old timers show up heavy.

The new:

If I hadn't watched Rickie Fowler choke away a fine chance to win the Shell Houston Open, I could have been convinced he might walk away with a green jacket. But, all things being equal, he still seems to have a penchant for the really untimely shot at the worst moment, kinda like a Greg Norman.

Somehow or another Spieth just has a feel for the Augusta course. And in the still young category, is world #1 Dustin Johnson, who many are picking to win it after finishing tied for 4th in last year's Masters, while also bagging his first major championship with the 2016 US Open.

Of the young crowd, who hasn't established himself enough yet, but who I often see highlight material from, is Bryson DeChambeau. Aside from the obvious commercial solicitation coming our way with the top money sponsor of the Masters tournament, IBM, going to ramrod the advanced analytics down our throats with DeChambeau doing calculus on the course, I actually think BDC makes some shout worthy shots with regularity.

*Whoops. Apparently DeChambeau didn't make the field.

I haven't seen Rahm play.

...

The old:

Did anyone see Tom Watson's bicep muscles during practice today? Dude was flexing off at the practice tees. I think it was Sergio who was standing nearby poking at 'em. I imagine Watson will partake in the Par 3 challenge tomorrow.

For years now I've had Bernhard Langer as my old timer dark horse and he nearly pulled it off twice in the last three years. But this time around, I got to go elsewhere.

Phil Mickelson.

If you've seen Phil play in the last month or so, dude is smooth. He looked very strong a month ago in the WGC match play. His game is tuned up, imo, and he's sounding confident in interviews.

The 3-time Masters winner finished tied for 2nd in 2015 and I expect him to be a major player this year. If for nothing other than I'd love to see Mickelson join Palmer and Woods as the only men to hold 4 green jackets, I'd pay money just for that.

And Jack still sits on top.

The weather is gonna win this year...at least the first two rounds. Forecast is for 25-30mph winds both days, with gusts over 40mph probable.

I'll probably take a flier on Rory, and a little less on Matsuyama.

Weather seems to help the old timers. I remember either 91, or 92, or 93, when rain and weather hit the Masters, it allowed Corey Pavin to jump out to a lead and contend even though he was a notorious short hitter.

It'll keep the young guns from rip'n. And as Phil said today, windy weather will make everyone miss shots, but he knows where to miss his shots. How much rain? Cause you know the Augusta greens become tame after rain.

I can see the association you're making with Rory. Irishman growing up playing in gale force winds on the mossy hills.

Exactly what I was thinking. That, and the fact that he's so friggin talented, you gotta figure he'll win one soon.

I think rain would help the old-timers, short hitters, and guys with lesser short games, but the rain is coming this afternoon. Thursday will be a little wet, but that wind will dry things out quick. No rain in forecast after today, and the weekend looks beautiful...which is nice for me since we're off to the beach Friday.

Looking for guys who can control the flight of their ball, but you've gotta have talent, and a short game to win at Augusta.

Guys who I think can control ball flight and maybe make some noise:

Patrick Reed, Louis Oosthuizen, Ross Fisher.

I'm gonna lay a bit on...

Adam Scott - 35/1

Bubba Watson - 35/1

Brandt Snedeker - 50/1

Louis Oosthuizen - 55/1

Spieth - 13/2

It's supposed to be windy on Thursday and Friday.  Augusta usually favors experience, and I think the conditions could make that even more true this year.  If you like real long shots, I think Charl Schwartzel at 75/1 or Zach Johnson 85/1 could be good plays.

Mickelson is my favorite golfer of all time.  I will be pulling for him as I always do.  It's hard to believe he hasn't won a tournament since 2013.  Maybe he can get that fourth jacket this weekend.

I would love to see Brandt win the Masters! He will join Jason Day and Justin Rose to form a very competitive group. Another group that I will paying attention to is the Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson and Jimmy Walker.

See the post above yours :(

Didn't the USA Network show the morning rounds when they broadcast it? Have no idea why ESPN doesn't.

But anyway, it is being broadcast on one of Directv's 4K channels and it is stunning.
