Terps Tip Off Big Season at Magic Maryland Madness

For the spectators in the stands, it was their first glimpse of the new-look team. The hype for the season began before last year’s ended, when Diamond Stone committed in March, and continued to build throughout the summer. First it was preseason Big Ten player of the year Melo Trimble deciding to come back for his sophomore season. A few weeks later Jake Laymanalso put the NBA on hold for one more season in College Park. Then Rasheed Sulaimon announced his intentions to enroll at Maryland as a graduate student.

The players, old and new, appeared just as excited on Saturday night to get out in front of the fans for the first time as the fans were to see them. When Mark Turgeon was handed the microphone at center court, he announced with pleasure that season tickets are already sold out. The crowd, which was more enthusiastic and approving of the product than a year ago at the same time, let Turgeon know their appreciation.

These fans are so passionate about Maryland basketball and I love it,” said junior power forward Robert Carter Jr., who sat out last year after transferring from Georgia Tech. “Just being able to step out here on this court is amazing.”

Although they’ve already practiced ten times prior to Saturday, and midnight madness events have turned into more of a pep rally than an actual practice, the scrimmage turned out to be fulfilling. The players played defense -- the final score was 12-8 in favor of the gold team -- and the added talent on the floor was on full display from the beginning; Carter Jr. scored the game’s first bucket on a right-handed hook shot.

The depth of the team was apparent from tip-off. Both starting lineups featured enough talent to compete in the Big Ten by itself. The “black” team was led by Carter Jr., Stone and Layman with Jared Nickens and Jaylen Brantley in the backcourt, while the “gold” team was anchored by Trimble, Sulaimon and Damonte DoddDion Wiley and Michal Cekovsky filled out the remaining two spots.

Diggs Goes over the Century Mark, Lands in Elite Company

Stefon Diggs rookie season continues to get better.

A week after catching six passes for 87 yards against the Denver Broncos in his regular-season debut, the fifth-round draft pick received his first career start and caught seven balls for 129 yards against in the Minnesota Vikings' 16-10 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

The last Vikings rookie go over 80 yards receiving in consecutive games?

Future Hall of Famer Randy Moss.

Sunday’s game also marked first time all season a Vikings receiver posted more than 100 yards receiving.

Diggs, who was a healthy scratch in the Vikings first three games, started in place of Everson Griffen (illness). He hauled in the first pass of the game from quarterback Teddy Bridgewater and finished the first quarter with four catches for 81 yards before the Chiefs started paying him more attention.

The rest of league is going to start noticing him more soon enough.

“He could be better than me,” Mike Wallace, the Vikings No. 1 receiver, told Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.“He’s young. When I came in [with Pittsburgh in 2009], I was playing well as a young guy, but I had one assignment: Beat them deep. Diggs is already running the full route treatment from Day One.”

Van Pelt to Host SportsCenter at Xfinity Following Terps-Hoyas

SportsCenter host and unabashed Maryland superfan Scott Van Pelt will host his new-ish late-night edition of ESPN's 'Big Show' at Xfinity Center following the Terps' game against Georgetown on Nov. 17, he confirmed to IMS. Van Pelt made his plan public Sunday afternoon in what looked like a spur-of-the-moment Tweet, but said it's been in the works for a while now.

"I kind of told the head guy here before our show ever started, on November 17th either I'm not doing a show, or we're going to do the show there. Because I will be in that building that night," he said.

It'll be the first time in Van Pelt's 14-year span at ESPN that he's done any sort of live programming from College Park, where he went to college in the late 80s. His only previous overlap between work and fandom -- aside from his frequent Terps references and catchphrases -- came several years ago when he produced a taped segment for the network's College Game Day show. This game, part of ESPN's annual Tip-Off Marathon, might be overshadowed nationally -- and pushed to ESPN2 -- by Kentucky-Duke and Michigan State-Kansas, but all eyes will be on Maryland whenever the 9 p.m. game ends.

"We had the idea and I got in touch with a couple of people at Maryland and they were like, 'Whatever you need,'" he said. "It's a neat thing. The Maryland folks have been good to me. It's cool when you can call home and they say 'whatever you need, you got it,' and they mean it."

Turgeon says he thinks the #Terps have 8 starters. Will play the best five on any given night.

Turgeon: "This team is rebounding as well as any team I've coached."

Turgeon says "everybody knew it was Dez's team" last year. Says leadership void to be filled this year. Layman, Carter, Sulaimon.

Turgeon says Diamond Stone's last two practices have been his two best so far.

Turgeon said Rasheed Sulaimon is "by far" Maryland's best perimeter defender. Will play a lot right away.

Diamond Stone Putting Work into a B1G Transition

Mark Turgeon knows a thing or two about highly-touted freshmen centers.

He’s coached two current multimillionaire big men -- DeAndre Jordan and Alex Len -- in the past seven years. Turgeon’s success with Jordan at Texas A&M helped him land Len in his first year at Maryland, and Len’s development from a raw 7-footer to a NBA lottery pick in two years was a factor in Diamond Stone’s decision to sign with Maryland over Duke, Kentucky and countless other schools.

Like his predecessors, Stone has NBA dreams, and many NBA draft sites already peg him as a lottery pick next year. But he's got plenty of work to do before he's ready to take his game to the next level -- including the adjustment from life as a high schooler in the Milwaukee suburbs to life in College Park as a big-time basketball player. It was a challenge at first, but his teammates have been there to show him the the ropes.

To them, he’s not a freshman -- they aren’t allowed to call him that -- he’s just “the new guy”.

“I thank my teammates for accepting me as a freshman, as a little immature freshman,” Stone said Tuesday at Maryland media day. “It was a struggle at first. I came from Milwaukee about 12 to 13 hours away, all my friends are there, and coming to Maryland I had really no friends. So my teammates are my new friends."

The on-court differences have been challenging too, he said.

http://espn.go.com/espnw/news-commentary/article/13945239/how-six-nation-best-basketball-recruits-all-wound-maryland

HOW SIX OF THE NATION'S BEST BASKETBALL RECRUITS ALL WOUND UP AT MARYLAND

Keys jingle-jangling in unison, throats sore from screaming and clothes drenched from a downpour, the University of Maryland student section roared for the Terps football team.

In the stands for that rainy Sept. 12 game against Bowling Green were five of the nation's top basketball prospects -- Jenna StaitiKaila CharlesBlair WatsonSarah Myers and Stephanie Jones -- who had all given their verbal pledges to Maryland.

The recruits' parents -- sitting in a different, more reserved part of the stadium -- were told at halftime that there had been a change of plans. They were escorted out of the stadium and taken to the gym, ostensibly to dry out.

But that's when the real waterworks began.

"The coaches brought all five girls on the court, each wearing a No. 16 jersey (to signify the class of 2016)," said Sandy Staiti, Jenna's mom. "That brought me to tears. It was like when you see your daughter in a wedding dress."

Indeed, 16 never looked so sweet, at least for the Maryland coaches, recruits and their families.

"I saw the joy on my parents' faces," Charles said. "I was glad I could make them happy while I'm doing something I love, too."

With three weeks to go before the opening of the NCAA's early signing period, the Terrapins -- whose top recruit, Destiny Slocum, wasn't even present that day - have assembled the No. 1 recruiting class in the nation.

Slocum, a 5-foot-7 point guard from Mountain View (Meridian, Idaho), is the No. 7 prospect in the espnW HoopGurlz Top 100 for the 2016 class. She had made her visit to Maryland in June and committed in August and wishes she could have been on campus for that September gathering.

"I've never met any of them," Slocum said of her fellow recruits. "Of course I felt jealous [not being there]. I have to be patient. I will get my time with them. I just look at it as we're getting six super players."

Brenda Frese has accomplished a whole bunch of things at Maryland -- she has led the Terps to three Final Fours, been named coach of the year and won a national title. But never before has she landed the top recruiting class in the nation.

She's in position to do so in 2016.

With verbals from five Top 100 prospects in her six-player class, Frese is closing in on a landmark haul.

Leading the way is Destiny Slocum, one of the elite guards in the nation and the picture of pizazz on the court. Expect Slocum, the No. 7 prospect in the nation, to come in as a freshman and star -- not to mention score -- right out of the gate.

Jenna Staiti, a 6-foot-5 center ranked 17th, is a shot-blocking force with good mobility to go along with imposing size.

Also featured in the class are wing Kaila Charles, ranked 25th, wing Blair Watson, ranked 28th and forward Stephanie Jones, ranked 51st, who follows her sister, junior center Brionna Jones, to Maryland.

Three-star guard Sarah Myers rounds out the class.

Dang. Basketball is gonna be fun for Terp fans! Brenda has transformed that program back to the pinnacle of the sport, where they stood for years (along with Tenn. and ODU) in the 70's.

Have an affinity for the girls as my daughter played, and won a NC 4A state championship a couple years ago. One of her close friends is still a HS junior, and a top recruit. I keep pushing the Terps, but she says if Stanford offers, she's going west. Can't really blame her.

I'll admit that I haven't watched the WBB team except in the conference tourney or NCAA's. But it would be nice if Coach B and her team started packing Comcast for their games. Make it a party. They'd love it. They're going to win a lot of games. The students and fans could do it.

http://maryland.247sports.com/Article/For-Wiley-and-Nickens-Winning-Trumped-All-in-Sulaimon-Signing-40476018

For Wiley and Nickens, Winning Trumped All in Sulaimon Signing

Even before Mark Turgeon added Rasheed Sulaimon to his team in May, expectations for Maryland were sky high. The Terps were ranked in the top five in the many premature preseason rankings that began to come out the day after Duke won the national championship, and they were seemingly just a sophomore leap from either Jared Nickens or Dion Wiley away from challenging for the top spot in the country.

It would have been easy for Turgeon to be content with his team, especially considering where it was the a year earlier, but he couldn’t pass up on the opportunity to add a proven veteran to the backcourt. At the time, it looked like either Wiley or Nickens would have to step up into the starting shooting guard spot vacated by Richaud Pack, but once Sulaimon committed to Maryland, it was immediately clear both were suddenly another year away from truly having a breakout campaign.

But neither seemed to mind. Both knew Sulaimon, the 6-foot-5 former McDonald’s All-American, helped their chances to do something special.

Turgeon "told us ahead of time before it became public because he didn’t want it to be a surprise to us,” Wiley said. “He didn’t want us to think he was recruiting over us or anything like that. He explained to us that we all can play together and for us to be successful, he would need another wing. And for us, we give into his system, so whatever he likes, we just go along with it.”
