It looks like all the best safeties this year are underclassmen. Walter football has Craig Loston from LSU and Ty Zimmerman from Kansas St. as the top 2 senior safeties and are projecting rounds 2-3 for them both with 4 juniors ranked ahead of them. Its still very early and a lot can change between now and then. Time to watch some lsu and k st. games and see what these 2 look like. Anyone know anything about these 2?

If NFL teams project him there I think Jamea Thomas from Georgia Tech will be the best safety in this class.

Whoever it is, I want to see someone who can wrap up and bring a guy down.  I don't want big hits where they lower their head and launch, Meriweather misses as much as he hits.

For that matter, I wouldn't be opposed to a corner that excels at tackling.

Ty Zimmerman is always a favorite of mine. Smart instinctual S. Won't blow you away, but he gets the job done always.

It will pick up I'm sure. I'm sure many like me lurk until later in the draft season.

Plus I'm a QB guy anyway and the interest for QBs really isn't there for our fanbase.

I'll probably end up following SAFs and ILBs this year.

After Captain Checkdown ruined your QB judgement cred., your best served switching to SAF's and ILB's.  ;)

Oh yeah, I WENT there! Enough of this friendly bunkum.

Hail.

If we're going by QB's who we thought would be better.  I've gotta admit, I thought Sam Bradford would be far better by now than he is.  I thought he was a legit superstar in the making.  Right now, he's slowly improving enough to be a solid QB, but I thought he'd be knocking on the "Elite" door.

On an actual draft prospect note.  Any chance Domonique Easley is there in the 2nd round?  He's everything I'm looking for in a 3-4 DE.  A bit undersized, but he's disruptive.  Lines up everywhere from over the Center to outside the Tackle.  Works very well with stunts, gets doubled a lot, and when he's not, he knifes through the line for a big TFL.  Doesn't seem to get a whole lot of sacks, but does get a fair amount of hits on the QB.  Usually finds a way to be in the QB's face by the end of the play.

I would love to nab him.  He's good enough at getting into the backfield that we could even use him in our "Swift" package.

Oh man. *Holds hand up ..... Uhm, I may of, like, kinda' said Tim Couch was going to to tear up the record books in the pro's.

In my defense I was young and under various substances at the time.

Pro scouting involves access to piles and piles of film from for multiple angles and that's without even going into actually attending games and talking to players. It's a fools errand to keep track of what we get right and what we get wrong, especially with positions that don't always have available highlights to see the entire play like WR or DB. Our bold prediction should be mostly for friendly banter.

But let me just reset a few things from the 2013 Comprehensive:

Khalil Mack    <---- ES 2013 Comprehensive Post.

I know we've covered Andrew Jackson before but Mack is incredibly good. Both Sutton and Mack are likely looking at 1st round consideration but we could hope for a 2nd round slide on either.

I would gladly grab either or both.

Here is the HTTR-24/7: Mack Player Profile.

A recent article on Mack, Gil Brandt praise:

THANK YOU!

Glad there is some love from some others on Mack so I know its not just me being a homer for UB. I mentioned him way back in Feb. As a UB Alum and someone who goes to every home game that kid is just mean.

If anyone is worried hes just not playing top talent in the MAC. This is his game Week 1 this year against OSU

Really like the way Kyle Fuller is playing this year for Va Tech. Terrific cover guy, but also fearless in the run game. Tonight against Ga Tech they got him blitzing the B gap trying to disrupt that triple option. And hes already forced a fumble doing just that. Wont find man CBs willing to stick their heads in there with the big boys.

Fuller looks like a safety. VT has a fine secondary. Fuller really flashed last night. Jarrett's nice, although that position doesn't translate to the NFL. Facsyon is really nice. Looking forward to watching Exum when he returns from injury.

I like Derrick Hopkins too. He shows up on film well and is a nice technician with good flexibility and balance. Good bender with a very low center of gravity. He's quick too. He's undersized unfortunately, but aside from that he's a nice player. I think he could be a useful specialist in a 4-3 system calling for penetrating inside linemen. A team like Tennessee would be a nice fit. He reminds me of Jurrell Casey though I don't think he's as fast as Casey.

I think Fuller would be wasted with our defensive staff.

Personally I have him as a top 20 guy. Think he's a true disruptive 3-4 DE

Steve,

Always a joy reading your analysis.  What safeties should I be keeping an eye out for this weekend?

Well, last night's game was a display of DB talent. VT has Kyshoen Jarrett and GT has Jemea Thomas, I like both players. Jarrett is a JR and he plays the Rover position at VT, which is not an NFL position. But he'll translate to safety IMO. He's a good athlete and he's physical.

Thomas has solid coverage skills and looks pretty powerful. A little short but thick. I think he's an NFL player. I don't think he's as good as Rambo or Philip Thomas were though.

The ACC has a lot of solid looking safeties this year. FSU's safeties are good. Tre Boston at UNC is alright. He hasn't been as good or productive as last year, but he's a decent tackler that runs well and has excellent size. Not really a playmaker but he does a good job keeping plays in front of him and playing downhill.

Alabama's Ha Ha Clinton-Dix is probably the top ranked guy in the class. He's good, but he's not great. He's got quick feet and has very good size and he has good recognition skills. He's a heady player. But he's nothing special. Not a particularly noteworthy playmaker, doesn't really pop on film.

This safety crop isn't as good as last year's was, and I think the guys we got are more talented than most of the guys in this class. We've got worthwhile young talent at the position to work with.

And rookie safeties struggle. So if we're looking for a quick fix to our crap safety play, not going to find it with a draft pick. We've got to either find a veteran who works out or be patient and develop from within.

Chris Borland needs to be a Redskin.

If it were up to me, I would select BOTH Andrew Jackson (WKU) & Chris Borland, together, same draft.

... I'm of the opinion that the Redskin's defensive issues are squarely in the Front-7, particularly the d-line, first and foremost. Then the interior linebacking, in terms of anticipation and instinctive flight to the ball and then noticeably the pass rush or lack thereof, in next importance.

Crazy thing is, he's an ILB used sparingly as a blitzer/pass rusher, and he has better rush moves and gets better pressure than any of our high draft pick pass rushers. And he is relentless in stopping the run. The guy is a football player. He reminds me a bit of James Laurinaitus, but with pass rushing skills.

The guy is a football player.

The hit Borland gave right at the goalline, just before Ohio State scored the next play, where he stood up #34 head-up at the 1 yard line. I literally yelled out loud and jump up off the sofa. And I don't have vested interest in Wisconsin, but I've followed Borland for a couple years and I'm always impressed.

What I want out of interior LBs is instincts. I wan t a guy who sees the play and can flow to the ball. Even if Borland isn't the biggest, he's obviously the toughest because he sticks his nose in there will no hesitation.

I can love a ball player who lacks elite measurables or athletic ability but makes up for it by way of anticipation, good slide and finding the ball. He also is factor on special teams. He comes off as an uber gadget play guy, a la Patriots multi-use utility guy.
