WSJ: Obama Attacked Over Party Platform on Jerusalem

Somebody should tell Mitt that, The United States as a country doesn't recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. That's why our embassy is in Tel Aviv. We haven't recognized Israel's right to any of the terriotry they captured in 1967 including Jerusalem, for 45 years across Republican and Democratic administrations.

Facts are only two countries, Guatemala and El Salvador; recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Obama Attacked Over Party Platform on Jerusalem

CHARLOTTE, N.C.–The Democratic Party platform doesn’t state that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, a change from prior years that could provide fuel to critics who say President Barack Obama’s commitment to Israel is weak.

“President Obama and the Democratic Party maintain an unshakable commitment to Israel’s security,” begins the 70-page platform in a section titled “The Middle East.” The three-paragraph section details the Obama administration’s support for Israel—including boosting security assistance—but says nothing about Jerusalem.

Such an omission provide an opening to Mr. Obama’s rival for the presidency, Mitt Romney, as Jewish voters—particularly in the battleground state of Florida—are key to the election.

“It is unfortunate that the entire Democratic Party has embraced President Obama’s shameful refusal to acknowledge that Jerusalem is Israel’s capital,” Mr. Romney said in a statement. He added, “Four years of President Obama’s repeated attempts to create distance between the United States and our cherished ally have led the Democratic Party to remove from their platform an unequivocal acknowledgment of a simple reality. As president, I will restore our relationship with Israel and stand shoulder to shoulder with our close ally.”

A spokeswoman for the Democratic National Committee, Melanie Roussell, said the Obama administration’s policy toward Jerusalem mirrors that of previous administrations. “As the White House said several months ago, the status of Jerusalem is an issue that should be resolved in final status negotiations between the Israelis and the Palestinians – which we also said in the 2008 platform. We will continue to work with the parties to resolve this issue as part of a two state solution that secures the future of Israel as a Jewish state and the homeland of the Jewish people.”

so was it removed or not?

Well hell, it was in the article

In 2008, the Democratic Party’s platform said “Jerusalem is and will remain the capital of Israel. The parties have agreed that Jerusalem is a matter for final status negotiations. It should remain an undivided city accessible to people of all faiths.”

Now why did they change it and why shouldn't they be expected to answer questions about it?

The Dems changed it because it was a stupid thing to say 4 years ago since it isn't true, and they certainly will have to answer questions about it. It's going to be awkward.

Maybe it was stupid 4, 8, 12, years ago, but it's clearly a very current turn away from Israel.

Edit: the right of return stuff is an even bigger deal. The change in that language really undermines Israel's position.

Why did the GOP change there platform? The GOP doesn't say anything about Jerusalem being the undivided capital of Israel anymore or moving the US embassy as it did in 2008, the article says something about that too.

The reason is it's provocative, and it makes any peace talks more difficult.

...

For years, both parties’ official platforms have mentioned that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel as part of an effort to show unflagging support to the country (and to garner support with Jewish voters).

...

The GOP’s platform also omits details about Israel that it had in its 2008 platform. In 2008, the GOP said “We support Jerusalem as the undivided capital of Israel and moving the American embassy to that undivided capital of Israel.”

...

This year’s GOP platform makes no mention of moving the embassy. ( or about Jerusalem being undivided.)

"CBS: Democrats reinstate "God" and Jerusalem language in party platform

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- After sharp criticism from Mitt Romney and Republicans, the Democrats have reinstated the language into their party platform that recognizes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel as well as the words "God-given" that were removed in this year's platform."

:ols: Peace Talks. :ols: There will never be peace there until one side is wiped out. The only way peace comes there is one side is completely destroyed and there are only a scattered amount of survivors. That's is and will always be, the way it is in the Middle EAST.

Wow listen to this vote. Anyone else going to argue that this wasn't political blunder from the outset? And now it has been compounded by a voice vote that was split.

You can hear it here.

Absolutely. They totally botched it up.

Sorry, but the majority of Arabs, will never recognize Israel's right to exist. I was an Middle Eastern festival this spring and they had the usual Palestinian booth- didn't see any maps with Israel. It's just not going to happen. Any so called peace agreement will have to permanent troops stationed around Israel; sort like the DMZ in the Koreas.

I disagree. The Arabs know that Israel is a done deal. Israel's complete intransigence has kept the anger on the front burner, but if the Palestinians had their own viable state, eventually the whole thing would simmer down. It would take a long, long time, of course.

They didn't need to do that, they are going to get the Black Christian vote, so why upset the Godless and morally bankrupt demographics. And why upset those who do not have any love for Israel? Liberal Jews will support the DNC because they are liberals first before anything else. (This was told to me by a several Democrats of Jewish faith several years ago at Pentagon City Mall.):)

Smartmove to move out of the Bank of America Stadium so OWS protesters and other don't point out how Bank of America fired 30k, then outsourced 30,000 jobs to the Phillipines.

Seems smart to me.

Right wanted to make an issue. Even though it's kind of a dumb thing to have to do, President stepped in and basically said "Copy, paste and replace every instance of 'faith' with the word 'God'" and the stuff about Israel.

Nip it in the bud before it becomes a "thing".

Even though I dont think it will have huge negative impact on his overall campaign, I do think you are kind of "painting a turd" some,
