ES Coverage: Skins at Eagles

Happy New Year from Lincoln Financial Field!

As a Skins fan, you already know the saying, "There's always next year". Well it's now 2012 so the Future is NOW. With this being the final regular season game, many of you have already been looking towards to April and the upcoming NFL Draft. Slow your horses up a bit. Today, we need to take a look at the guys on the field today to see who we want to bring back and who we need to cut ties with.

The Skins will have 15 Free Agents and 2 Restricted Free Agents to evaluate for next season. Here's our Free Agent list and what I see happening out with it.

Free Agents

--Phillip Buchanon CB UFA i]Gone[/i]

--Dominique Byrd T UFA ?

--Adam Carriker T UFA 50/50 on a return

--Fred Davis TE UFA Expected back

--London Fletcher LB UFA Expected back

--Kedric Golston DT UFA Expected back[\i]

--Rex Grossman QB UFA 50/50 at this time on a return. Wants to start. Also wants$$$

--Tim Hightower RB UFA Really depends on how he's healed

--LaRon Landry S UFA Expected back. Possibly tagged

--Kory LichtensteigerC UFA Could definitely see him back as depth.

--Rocky McIntosh LB UFA Possibly back due to Special Teams play.

--Will Montgomery CB UA Could definitely see him back as depth.

--Derek Schouman TE UFA ?

--Donte Stallworth WR UFA Couldgo either way. Good vet presence but also getting older. Still better then Galloway.

--Ryan TorainRB UFA Already cut

Restricted Free Agents

--Graham Gano K RFA Expected back unless he melts down completely today. Plus Shanny likes his upside.

--Byron Westbrook CB RFA Another guy I can see back due to Special Teams play. Though ST play won't guarantee you a roster spot. 50/50 here as well.

Now, we do have some holes, some obvious, some not. Thankfully we have Free Agency before the NFL Draft this year and here's why. I fully expect the Front Office to be very aggressive this time around as the FA pool will be pretty deep due to no Lockout. If they do what I expect them to, we should end up with great, quality depth. Which leads to the current rumored price to trade up to #2 in the Draft. That price is two Firsts, a second, and one of our fourths. Four picks to move up for Luck or RG3. If we do what we need to do in Free Agency, I'd make the jump and do it and not think twice about it.

So, to recap, 43 guys under contract with the new CBA and we carry over 12 million in Cap room. By the start of Free Agency we'll be roughly 50 million under the Cap. Which puts is in the neighborhood of about 83 million with next years Cap being roughly 124 million. Oh, and don't forget to carry over the extra Cap space. Yeah. You better recognize.

Increase Shanahan’s record to 14-12 against the NFC East during the regular season.

Final Thoughts

Ugh.

What do you mean I can't just go with "Ugh"? No one wants more of something if its awfull.

Ok. Lets just go over the good, what little of it there was. OJ's pick of Vick & lateral to Hall was pretty good. Royster & Young both got a good share of work in today. Perry Riley, after partially giving up a TD, continued to make 56 revalent again. Rob Jackson withj good showing after coming in for an injured Orakpo. Oh & the Colts lost.

Now for the bad. The first half. Whether it was penalties or turnovers, the Offense was just bad. When your long snapper cant manage to get his ass on the field before time runs out, it may be time to get a new one. Moss taking a penalty for removing his helmet, dumb. I get that the non calls have been building this year, but to do something that dumb which takes your team out of scoring position, inexcusable. Blocked kick didn't help either. Rex underthrowing the deep ball, yeah that wasn't good either.

That said, bottom line is this. Forget Shanny's win loss record here. We are greatly improved from where we were under Vinny. Bruce & Shanny are rebuilding more then just a team. They're rebuilding the entire organization. We now value Draft picks yet aren't shying away from Free Agents. Now, they just have to be the right Free Agents and at the right cost.

Good blurb TK. March and April are gonna be very interesting. Too bad we'll have the long summer until September to wait for the results....ugh! Maybe the baseball team does something this season to keep people interested.

Enjoy the Linc, and be safe.

Another interesting and information-laden OP, Rick. I am pretty much on the same page, thinking maybe more that Carriker is 60/40 and Hightower is 40/60. So pretty close. Also, I would normally be really reluctant to pay the trade price you listed, and I need to see what we actually do in FA, but if that goes really well, I would fight back my reluctance and roll the bones and pay that prcie for RGIII and be done with that position (obviously, that's "hopefully done").

BTW, check your PMs and don't get too Philthy.

Shanny better have a hell of an off season, this fan base isn't going to put up with another losing season. Now that the games are over the fun can really start, crazy to say that but that's where we are. I can't wait to see what the offseason brings. Thanks for the info TK.

Good stuff here..if thats the price i def. make that trade to move up to 2.

Stand corrected Hit, my apologies.. Let's hope Cleveland pulls it out, put us at 5.

Just got home from the game. Eagles fans not as advertised. They were the most docile, dispassionate fans I've ever been around. I was actually surprised how pleasant and calm and accommodating they all seemed.

Jets fans are the worse group I have ever experienced. Happy they treated you nicely....

That's vbecause you didn't get the real Philly crowd. Stadium was half empty for a meaningless game on New Years Day. TONS os season ticket holders were just giving away tickets.

Yeah, you're right. I just can't fathom being that disinterested in a game, even if it is 'meaningless'. I still want to see my team win and I still cheer hard. Hell, I've been to preseason games where I saw more passion from the fans than I did yesterday.

Definitely wasn't given a reason not to go back next year. ^_^
