Hitman21ST
I dont get it...can this guy play NT...if not then why the hell did we sign him? Why do we keep signing guys who are great 3 techniques for our 3-4?! He's a NT. Consistently took on double teams in the Giants' defense last year, and still got penetration. He's the middle-man for us.
Backpack3r
If by depth you mean he pushes current starters to the bench? Cofield will be a starter. Even better then.
Warhead36
Great signing IF he can fit the 3-4. Can't believe people are comparing him to Golston. Golston was barely a backup on our terrible D last year. Cofield was a starter on a very good Giants DL.
Backpack3r
He was a 3-4 DE in college. Not that I care since Cofield is now dead to me.:beatdeadhorse: What do you mean he is dead to you? He is a Redskin now, are you too accustomed to signing the Jason Taylors and Bruce Smiths, the big names?

Why do we keep signing guys who are great 3 techniques for our 3-4?! Our defensive coordinator is Jim Haslett, and Shanny's clueless when it comes to defense. Is more explanation needed? Not that I'm against signing Cofield. I think he can play DE at a much higher level than Golston, and he's not Franklin or a Jenkins at least. Truant
Good move! Young defensive linemen that have athleticism don't grow on trees. The price looks good... continue investing in the trenches with young talent. "Over the past three seasons, Cofield played through knee and shoulder issues that required major surgeries. Still, he recorded three sacks in 2008 after having his knee reconstructed, and he set a career-high with four sacks last season while playing through a labrum issue." Having said that, he's only missed one game in his career. http://www.nj.com/giants/index.ssf/2011/07/end_of_nfl_lockout_means_a_lik.html
Sawyer5500
Cofield is a major upgrade over Golston in run defense and pass rushing.
SpacePenguin
Leaving aside the actual players selected....I really like the way Allen draws up these contracts. They've all been very reasonable aside from that crazy Mcnabb one. HTTR
kyousukeneko
Cofield will probably do a Simular type of NT as a Jay Ratliff a Penetrating NT. interesting big question mark if posible though.
AboveLegit
He has a great motor, we need more guys like that on our defense.

Consistently? I find that hard to believe with the caliber of players on that DL including Osi, Kiwi, and Tuck.

Umm...if they wanted penetration from the NT...then what exactly was the issue with Haynesworth schemewise?
SkinsFTW
Sounds like a good deal. Since I haven't been paying any attention though, I'd have to wonder what is the plan for Jenkins? Is he a DE? I thought he was going to be the new NT. At least Cofield is a reasonable signing and is young. Much better idea than Haynesworth.
Hitman21ST
Consistently? I find that hard to believe with the caliber of players on that DL including Osi, Kiwi, and Tuck. All DEs. Cofield occupies C and G, leaving the DEs one on one with the Tackles.

But hey, Albert was nuts is an acceptable answer.
JimmyConway
All DEs. Cofield occupies C and G, leaving the DEs one on one with the Tackles. That was my point. Teams would double one of their nasty DEs rather than Cofield. Also, at 307lbs is he big enough to play NT?
