Special K
Simple question: to those of you who have had rotator cuff tears, was it an acute injury that caused them or repeated use over time? What were your symptoms? Also, to those who had surgery, what was your recovery time?
The 12th Commandment
I don't know the answer to your questions but that surgery changed my HS best friend from a minor league pitcher to a missionary in Africa. True story.
Gibbs Hog Heaven
I just briefly, as she was just going out of the door, spoke to a friend of mine who works in Ortho.; and recovery time after surgery could take anything up to half a year to get full range of mobility and strength back. It's obviously dependent on the individual's body in each case. All about getting the balance right between rest and physio as to how quickly you recover from the surgery. Oh, and apparently lot's of ice helps, shrugs. Like I said, it was a brief discussion. Hope it's some use k. Hail.
Goingforburgundy
I had a small tear when I dislocated my shoulder during a hockey game. I opted for quick rehabilitation instead of surgery. I regret it every day.
Special K
So pretty much, I'm screwed. Great. I got back into tennis aout 9 months ago and about 2 months ago my shoulder started hurting. My service game is certainly the strongest part of the game and now my shoulder is killing me and my serve blows now. Hell, I can't even throw a bone to my dog. Right now, I play about 4-5 days a week in leagues and take a ton of Advil and ice it every night, but I'm at the point where I can hardly lift my shoulder to put on a shirt or a jacket. I can hardly pick up my purse at certain angles too. My dad thinks I may have a partial tear just based on the raange of motion problems I'm describing to him over the phone. I'm just really pissed because I have 2 USTA teams I'm playing on that start in a couple weeks and I just wanted to see what other people's experiences were with rotator cuff issues were and how they addressed them... My hope is I can get a cortisone shot to last me through the summer leagues and if the doctor says I need surgery, I can wait until fall or winter... Pete
I've done about everything bad to both shoulders you can except tare my rotator cuff. After 4 surgeries on my right shoulder I can say it has much to do with how you rehab, and your pain threshold. Even after 3 major surgeries, I was back on the job within 4.5 months, and I do pretty physical work. I always asked for the hardest PT, and worked out every day. It's been 21 years since the last surgery, and I'm still doing physical work. From what I understand, more often then not, rotator cuff tares are done by scope. The one scope I had they trimmed scar tissue, ground away some bone, and some work on a tendon. I was done with rehab in 5 weeks, and had the 4th surgery a few days later because they couldn't repair all the damage with the scope. Listen to the doctor, and the PT you get, and push your self as much as they will allow you. Stay off the pain killers during PT, as it makes it too easy to do more harm then good. Destino
You're going to need an MRI so you may as well make the doctor appointment now with a specialist. Your third appointment (doctor->mri->doctor again) will tell you what's wrong with your shoulder and how to fix it. Four appointments if you need a referral to see a specialist. I haven't had a shoulder injury but I hurt my back and had to go through the above process. BTW - demand the MRI. Don't go for any of this "in office tests" crap where they manipulate your arm to determine the injury.
PCS
I would imagine any treatments that could be done for now,Keeastman probably knows. I've got a friend of mine who had some surgery done to the cuff and after about 6 months,he's back at it again about as strong as he was. It supposed to be even better as time goes on. Now as for this. My hope is I can get a cortisone shot to last me through the summer leagues and if the doctor says I need surgery, I can wait until fall or winter... Now just what would you say if a patient came to you and said that?

Very odd because when I tore mine about 15 years ago (never got surgery), tennis and swimming were always positives exercise for it.

I haven't had a shoulder injury but I hurt my back and had to go through the above process. Oh yeah, no way in hell I'm starting out with a primary care doctor. Fortunately, I'm able to go to the shoulder and knee specialist the Olympic athletes use, so I know he's great. I've met him before (with the 2 ACL reconstructions he's done on the hubby). Regardless, I'm going to annoy the hell out of him by making him talk to my dad via cell phone during our appointment. Gotta admire the spunk though, but you're dad does what? And his advice about this plan? Lol. he's an orthopedic surgeon. He said I'll likely need an MRI and contrasting arthrogram. If those are negative, then I can probably do the cortisone shot and continue eating about 50 advil a day. Okay, maybe not 50. Even if there isn't a tear, I'll have to take time off of tennis because the cortisone shot actually makes the tendon more susceptible to injury if I keep up the same pace that I'm playing right now, which is about 4 matches a week plus 2-3 drills with my instructor on top of that. I think he knows me well enough not to tell me flat out I can't play USTA this summer. He just says let's get your appointment and make decisions for there. Although I know he's think to himself "I've raised a freaking idiot for a daughter." Now just what would you say if a patient came to you and said that? Oh, my dad is the most supportive dad ever and said he wish he could do all this for me back in Cali. But he also thinks I'm a total moron. Oh gawd, I never should have started this thread. Bad news left and right. Grrrrrr! I have a couple weeks off before my 2 USTA teams start matches at the end of may, so I'm hoping I can con the doctor into giving me the cortisone shot and a buttload of celebrex, then I'll rest until the first match. If I can't serve then I'll talk to him about those other BAD OPTIONS! :tantrum:

Special K
I'm really sorry keast, it's a bad deal. Thanks KAO. If I could just put the surgery off until the end of August, I'd be fine with this whole thing. I have a grant for work that needs to be completed by the end of August so I really don't have time for this surgery crap. Plus, it's my first time playing back at USTA and I've been looking forward to it all fall and winter. Damnit!!! Hopefully the doc will have good news. ZoEd
Tore RC in RT shoulder and the PT only made it worse, finally got to the point where they had to do surgery. Scoped it, cleaned things up, slight tear in labrum as well, cleaned it up also. PT'd itfor about a month and a half and my right shoulder is strong as ever except for fatique, if I play softball for an extended period of time it gets real tired. Tore my bicep tendon in my lft shoulder, it still hurts like a biotch 4 years later. I think I may have torn it again recently but the idiotic military doc's don't want to listen. Instead they want to "let's see how physical therapy goes, then we'll do a cortisone shot and if that doesn't work we'll do an MRI". Really? I've already had surgery, I've done a combined 1.5 years of PT on both my shoulders, you think I haven't been doing the exercises necessary to make it better? You think after two surgeries I don't know the difference between simply needing PT and needing an MRI because something isn't right? Hate military doctors sometimes. It literally soundes like something is grinding in my shoulder, lets try PT! Oh, sorry for hijacking keestman, I hate shoulder injuries!
Special K
No hijacking at all ZoEd. I'm interested in hearing people's stories...well kind of. I think I'm starting the realize this summer might not go as planned.
