Chargers must be kicking themselves right about now

Just thinking about last night's Super Bowl, and how the San Diego had at least a chance to have both of those quarterbacks. If Indy had gone with Ryan Leaf, then Manning was going to San Diego. If the Chargers hadn't drafted Rivers or released Brees, then they have #9. How many Chargers fans were saying that that could have/should have been San Diego in the Super Bowl yesterday?

i agree that on the surface it would be easy for those fans to ask "what if"

however, even in hindsight they made the right call.

they had no control over the Manning/Leaf situation - if they would have drafted Leaf first over Manning it would have been a different story.

as for the Brees/Rivers situation, the decision was somewhat of a no brainer. i know that Brees had had a couple good seasons by that point after taking a while to come around, but you dont get rid of a #4 overall potential future star at QB who is (obviously) younger and healthier to keep a guy coming off a brutal throwing shoulder injury.

Brees has without question vaulted into the #2 qb in the league spot, but the Chargers still made the right move then based on what they had to go on.

Who is to say that Peyton would have agreed to go to San Diego? Eli refused to go and he's not as good as his brother is, regardless that they both won Super Bowls.

Peyton would have gone to SD. He told the Colts that if they didn't pick him "he would kick their butts for the next 15 years." He's also nowhere near as stuck up as Eli is. Big brother's earned his accolades, Eli's a David Tyree miracle from being a footprint in history, who figured his name earned him clout as a rookie on draft day.

They also traded Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning (he didn't wanna play for them, but still) and passed on Big Ben. All the QBs they've passed on or neglected have won super bowls. Ouch.
Rivers is still damn good. And I'd rather have Rivers then Eli anyway.

Hindsight is 20/20, and SD made the right decision at the time. Brees wasn't cutting it at that point and they saw a franchise QB on the board in Rivers, very few teams would of passed that up if placed in that situation. Sadly for them the light finally turned on for Brees the very next season, and dumping Rivers wasn't really realistic for a number of reasons.

I agree it had to be painful for Chargers fans to watch, but their organization made the right call back when they drafted Rivers. Nobody knew Brees would be this good.

Snyder should be kicking himself. Think about all the busted and underachieving free agents we have signed since the era began. Then think about the fact that Brees was an unrestricted free agent who wasn't even sniffed by the Skins.

What was he thinking? And Brees was money his last 2 years in San Diego so it is not like he was unproven or anything.

I agree with all the bad signings Snyder has had through the years; however, 28 other teams should be kicking themselves, especially Miami, for passing on Brees. Only NO and Miami brought him in and Miami didn't trust that he could stay healthy.

What Synder was thinking was that there was no way in hell you can sink that much into 1 position, even if it is QB. Brees was a FA in '06. Gibbs had traded a 3rd for Brunell two years prior, and he had just led this team to the playoffs (and a pick-6 from the Championship game). They had drafted JC in the first round in '05, and had no idea what they had in him at that point. If he brings Brees in, you have the same problem on the Redskins that the Chargers had: A good QB in Brees (remember, he wasn't the Super Bowl MVP back then, he was a good QB coming off a complete tear of the labrum in his throwing shoulder....not a condition that is always easy to overlook) and a young 1st rounder sitting on the bench.

Snyder's had his share of ****-ups, but without being psychic there's no way to logically blame him for passing on Brees in '06. Only in hindsight does that happen, like blaming Snyder for not drafting Tom Brady in the 5th round before the Pats could snag him.
