REDSKINS SIGN TWO COLLEGE FREE AGENTS

LOUDOUN COUNTY, VA – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have signed defensive lineman J.D. Skolnitsky and linebacker Darrel Young. Both players participated in the team’s mini-camp last weekend on a tryout basis.

The 6-foot-5, 263-pound Skolnitsky played the last three seasons at James Madison before leaving the school after his junior campaign. As a junior in 2008, Skolnitsky registered 61 tackles, including 10.5 for loss, 4.5 sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery for the CAA champion Dukes. Skolnitsky was born Nov. 6, 1986, and attended Fairfax (Va.) High School.

The 5-foot-11, 248-pound Young was a four-year starter at Villanova and earned third-team All-CAA honors last season when he recorded 73 tackles, including nine for loss, two sacks and three passes defensed. In his 44-game career, the Amityville, N.Y., native logged 244 tackles, including 19.5 for loss, six sacks, one interception, one forced fumble and three blocked kicks. Young was born April 8, 1987.

Just players to fill out the roster. I believe they released some over the weekend so they added some this week.

I like the continual roster changes. If the team hits on just one of these guys they will have success. To all the signings that don't make it, they just join all the other players cut by all the other teams.

We need some solid competition. I'm all about brining as much talent in as possible. Thats how you find quality depth, good role players, and potential gems. I always felt they didn't do enough of this.

Hey, Wesbrook came out of Villanova....

Darrel Young

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/2009/draft/players/23071.html

BIOGRAPHY: Three year starter awarded all-Conference honors as a senior after posting 73/9/2. Junior totals included 78 tackles after 44 as a sophomore. Moved from linebacker to safety as a senior.

POSITIVES: Instinctive, hard-working defender who always gives effort to get involved in the action. Plays assignment football, displays good awareness and quickly diagnoses the action. Breaks down well, uses his hands to protect himself and wraps up tackling.

NEGATIVES: Lacks speed to the flanks, gets minimal depth on pass drops and shows limitation in coverage.

ANALYSIS: Young possesses marginal speed for the next level yet has the build and mentality to backup on the inside of a 34 alignment where he could be a two down defender.

PROJECTION: Free Agent

Overview

Darrel is a graduate of the infamous Amityville High School on Long Island. He graduated in 2005 after earning three varsity letters in football and four in track and basketball. Darrel was a 2-time Team MVP, a 3-year captain and an All-County and All-League player. He was also honored as a 2-time First Team All-Long Island performer, an All-State honoree (2004), and won the prestigious Collatta Award (2003) for top linebacker in Suffolk County. He was also All-County in track.

As a true freshman at Villanova in 2005, Darel tallied 13 tackles, three sacks, two tackles for loss, a pass break-up and a blocked kick. In 2006, he played in all 11 games and had 44 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one forced fumble and two blocked kicks. As a junior, he played in all 11 games and had 78 total tackles, four tackles for loss, one interception and two pass break-ups. In 2008, he recorded 73 total tackles with 9 TFLs good for 44 yards in losses and added 2 sacks and 3 pass breakups.

LATE NOTE: Darrel did really quite well for himself at the Villanova Pro Day recording 4.59/4.61 forties, with a 32" vertical jump, a 9'4" broad jump, a 4.27 short shuttle, a very impressive 6.94 3-cone drill and managed 24 bench reps.

Strengths

Adequate girth and foot speed. Quick laterally. Tough kid who will hit you. Fairly productive, but at a mid-level of competition. Has some pass defense awareness. Smart. Solid character kid.

Weaknesses

Not explosive. Short. Not a dominant college football player in the CAA.

Projection

Only chance is to impress on special teams. He does have some tools though, enough for a camp look. Priority UDFA.

J.D. Skolnitsky

http://cdsdraft.com/profile.php?id=3620

overview

Solid FCS DT who could be looked at as a possible rotational 4-3 DE. Put up solid numbers for one of the nation's best FCS clubs in 2008, totaling 61 tackles (22 solo), with 10.5 TFLs, 4.5 sacks, 3 PBUs, 3 PDs, a FF and a FR.

Here are J.D.'s Pro Day numbers:

9'10" broad jump, 31.5" vertical jump, 21 bench reps. 1.60/1.60 10-yard splits, 4.72/4.76 forty times, 4.34 short shuttle, 7.19 3-cone drill.

Strengths

Fine athlete. Strong enough for college DT and big enough to be looked at as a possible conversion guy to a 4-3 DE slot.

Weaknesses

Only really put up big numbers for one season. Kind of a tweener right now who is too light for DT, but not experienced as a DE.

Projection

Priority UDFA.

Something mentioned when the original signing story was printed a couple of days ago.

01/15/09 - J.D. Skolnitsky's football career at JMU is over. Head coach Mickey Matthews announced Thursday that the NCAA had Skolnitsky declared ineligible for the 2009 season after testing positive for a banned substance. "This is very tough," says an emotional Matthews at a brief press conference Thursday afternoon. "He's a great kid." Skolnitsky would have been a fifth-year senior on the 2009 team, meaning the NCAA's one-year ban has ended his college career. Matthews said Skolnitsky has filed the necessary paperwork to become eligible for this April's NFL Draft. Skolnitsky tested positive for the banned substance after JMU's playoff win against Villanova in December. Matthews said Skolnitsky had been taking an over-the-counter weight gainer and didn't realize the product contained anything banned by the NCAA. "JD is thought of as a brother by all the players. There's not a more popular kid. The coaches think of him as a son," says Matthews. "I mean, he is absolutely the best kid in the program." Matthews wouldn't identify the supplement Skolnitsky had used or the banned substance it contained. Skolnitsky had been a starter at defensive tackle for the Dukes during the past two seasons. He finished the 2008 season with 61 tackles, including 10.5 for a loss and 4.5 sacks. Matthews was confident Thursday that Skolnitsky would draw interest from NFL teams, calling him the best pro prospect the team has had during his JMU tenure. Skolnitsky is on pace to graduate later this year, either in the spring or summer. - Damon Dillman, WHSV TV Channel 3 News

When you joke about these guys, some of you fellas embarrass yourselves and really expose how little you know of the history of great players that had fabulous NFL careers that were once "no-name" players because they came from very small schools. I wouldn't be the least surprised if some of you are ignorant as to how Joe Jacoby became a Redskin.

What ever happened to the Offensive line UDFAs???....are there NO prospects,... not even Camp Fodder O-line folks around???

Heyer - 25 - UDFA

Batiste - 27 - UDFA

Clark - 23 - UDFA

Montgomery - 26 - 7th round

Ross - 28 - UDFA

Riley - 25 - UDFA

add this years:

68 Scott Burley OL Maryland

and projects:

Mike Williams

Jeremy Bridges

havent heard anymore talk of Anthony Montgomery but he's played Guard and Jumbo package TE.

We dont need anymore UDFA. What we needed was a solid 3rd rounder instead of a project CB (I like Barnes but dam).

I do like both of these signings though. JD numbers are impressive and Darrell had a beast of a proday.

Darrel did really quite well for himself at the Villanova Pro Day recording 4.59/4.61 forties, with a 32" vertical jump, a 9'4" broad jump, a 4.27 short shuttle, a very impressive 6.94 3-cone drill and managed 24 bench reps.
